If you read the key you'll see that a dashed line is suppoed to mean "Joined" not "Formed". I know nothing about the history of PL except that some Tri mk 1 people went there so hence the dashed line.

Unfortunately Corp alliance histories were not tracked until a patch 18 months ago or so.
I'd agree with trying to focus on alliance genealogy, and rather than each random person try and draw up some partial picture we just need a simple web database for each Alliance that allows you to link predecessor and successor/spin-off alliances along with comments. From this data we could then construct a graphical representation.

A good start imho would be to backtrack from the first powerblocks, activly inhabiting 0.0 from where EVE started off. The corps / leaders from back then, that are still alive today could possibly be an indicator of how the EVE universe has evolved to today.
Curse Alliance, I'd suggest Chowdown if he's still around or the dark lord himself. Stain Alliance, I'd suggest Trigger. Fountain Alliance, I'd suggest SirMolle, and Tornsoul for the later FA part. As for the north of that time I'm a bit clueless, but I'd recommend someone from the old PA guard.
Lot's have changed, friends are now enemies and vice versa. And i'm dead sure someone actually wrote a part on EVE history on these forums some time ago.

As far as i am aware it was sniggs first alliance however most older NESW members infact most NESW members in general are exKOS (Knights of the southerncross) from a variety of corps. Some NESW had snigg alts back when snigg was based in curse and fighting KOS (summer 06), Blue Labs is also exKOS but a more recent addition (relatively) to the alliance it was allready well known before they joined and there was one other exKOS corp but they have either merged with NESW (certainly some members have joined) or just left the alliance. OMNOR are a fairly mixed bag i know they have been in privateers in the past but not too much more than that and they joined PL this year.

CCP should spend some money on this - get a couple people working on developing a community history tool and integrating input from multiple sources.
The rich history of eve is one of the things that originally hooked me on the game and the larger context of daily battles still keeps me logging in to this day. Its also one of the most unique things about Eve because its so many years on a single shard with so many players its an incredible tapestry of pod lives.

dp preacher made a huge work on the RKK story that is written from 2004 and forward, it is ofc centered to RKK and BoB, but a lot of other corps and alliances and also a large chunk of history is presented.
Well worth the time to read, it is very well written.

I also iirc think thre is a few histoy parts on wiki, that are good.

I think corps might be too hard (just because there are so many of them) but it could work for alliances.
I have had a first stab at a (very simplified) early tree of the south of EvE. This is mainly from memory with a few glances at the early aliiance maps.
Apologies to any entities I have missed off. In fact I have just realised I missed AXE who spwaned from ASCN and (eventually) ended up in the GBC iirc)
Oh Tri are only there as that's there Exceed have ended up and not because I can't read a map and think we are living in the south atm :-P
Anyway here it is: Joram's attempt at a simple tree
If you add Pure as the chield of FIX i think (i know there are some stung feeling about this) but still think that would be pritty much accurate.

some of curse mk2 went into goonswarm (battlestars, ars discordia, black omega secutirty) black omega security is now in PL, along with alot of goons.
invictus merged into iron and then joined iron/NC
i think someof curse mk 1 became RA which then part joined/formed AAA
fix became pure., outbreak, and then outbreak bred havoc (tri) i think
fountain alliance led to morsus mihi
G/NBSI/trust became D2 which became evoke, youwaht, mostly harmless kraftwork
lv gave m.pire and fatal alliance, i think lots of fatal ended up in insurgency (not really sure about this), and some m. Pire ended up in mostly harmless
RA -> solar fleet, xdeathx, unl, rebelion, AAA, TCF
ascn -> irc, invictus, goonswarm, rk, axiom
fla, smash, rk -> atlas
stain -> ka-tet, rk, se, others
phoenix allaince -> phalanx allaince (???) -> tri mk 2 (?)
xetic -> coalition empires -> stella nova united -> frege, rk, smash, tcf
iron -> iron -> iron -> iron

I made this crappy PAINT thingy (please do not click if you are colour blind)
As CVA has always been CVA (since 2003) it doesn't really have a family tree but it has (since 2004) had a consistent home with lots of interesting relationships so for your excitment I created this 'Very simplified history of Sov Holding alliance in Providence' (it also overlaps into Catch)
http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=provihistoryuw0.jpg
There is also a CVA history here: http://eve-history.net/wiki/index.php/Curatores_Veritatis_Alliance - although it's not up to date and whoever wrote the Triumvirate element was on drugs (it doesn't make a lot of sense)!

I'm sure Jade or even Ragnar could do it better, yes I heard he was back someplace, for VA, PA was but a shadow of the former.
Ideally these trees would start dealing with corporations and once mapped superimpose alliance affiliations for greater detail.

There were several cycles of exodus from FIX. PURE was one spin-off. Elite Storm Armada was another. 0utbreak was a third (not really an alliance, I know). Of course all of those organizations became very different with a great mix of members over time. The corp H A V O C was founded with the many of the active members of the last leg of FIX, along with a number of members from 0utbreak (some who'd been from FIX, some not). So there is even a dotted-line to TRI (though we weren't a founding part even of Mk 2). I'm sure there are others. At the time it closed FIX was the oldest in-game alliance still in Eve, and I was with it only a couple short years post-CODA. Most of the corps in FIX when I joined are still in tact and active in different places in Eve. This is true of every alliance though - its really too much information to process to try and connect all these little webs.

Hard to stop laughing at the CFS -> BoB line
Any serious attempt at this tree will have to start with the 4 alliances who grabbed the NPC stations; SA VA FA CA. Then add in the ones who started to venture out into other 0.0 regions, like CFS, Xetic, CVA, Norad and whatever else that was up in the north. Then, when conquerable stations were added, some interesting things started to happen, with some alliances soon more or less breaking up and new ones forming (CFS mess, with FA looking to grab stations there, Evol leaving FA and making new friends, Xetic growing lots, C4 leaving SA for CA, etc etc). And then ofc lots of alliances breaking up, CA, SA, ASCN etc... Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

Aye, need to switch from formed to joined for the UFS to BoB. Though I'd say the greater majority never went there, and it was pilots only that would have made the transition, no whole corps.
I know of at least 3 major corps that went from the UFS (from the CFS root) to SA, the other two roots that formed the UFS were DSMA (Deep Space Mining Alliance), and ...can't remember... looked it up, StA (Star Alliance). From memory, the primary corporation from StA, Adeptus Gatacus (sp?) joined SA as well. One of the main remaining CFS corps that left at the end was Imperial Dreams, who then joined (helped create?) CVA.
QDF, while a mutual defense pact in nature, was the root that then formed FIX, not all corps made the transition. As JC noted, many of the remaining corps from the last leg of FIX created a new joint corp, HAVOC, which is a member of TRI (mkII).
I guess Pure. could be considered an offshoot of FIX, to my knowledge the founders were all ex-FIX, but would need them to verify. Also don't know if when the various corps left Pure. if a number of them have stuck together and joined or formed another alliance that could be considered a root contribution or if they have gone seperate ways.
Hope the above helps round out the Southern picture a bit.
