The effect of the news story is quite noticeable. I've just accepted 12 applications which were made in the past 8 hours alone - that's more apps than I've ever accepted in an entire day before!
And of course there's the 'cool' factor of being covered in the news 
(Counting this as my bump for today: there were 6 users on Thursday.)

Got my jump clone 2 days ago. My request to join the corp was accepted in a couple hours and from there was a walk in the park. Excellent service, I recommended it to all members in my corp.
