It's because "you people" (the ones that have more than just one account just to make ISK in-game) are either stupid or seriously "mathematically challenged".
It should be obvious that there aren't THAT many things you can do with a character that WON'T involve actually spending time/effort on it... more often that not, much less time and effort than you initially thought you'd be capable of putting in. And then, in order to justify yourself the existance of an alt, you start running it on GTCs instead of a subscription, compounding the problem even further.
Let me give you some clear examples... you might start off with one mission-runner character, and you make 20 mil ISK/hour. You run a couple of full weekends of mission-running and make a bundle, then think to yourself "gee, I'd really like to have another character to make that kind of money with". AFTER you either spend the time to train that second one (or ISK to buy it) and start using it, you notice that you're not making quite 20 mil ISK/hour/char, but a bit less. Not only that, but you heavily cut down on time spent running missions, AND you pay some of that for the GTCs needed for that character. In reality, MOST of you will probably need a couple of real-time years to break even, IF you even make it that long and EVER break even.
So... want to have cheap GTCs ? SELL YOUR ALTS TO SOME NEWBIES THAT GOT THE MONEY SELLING GTCs. And encourage everybody else you know to do the same. Then get a second/part-time RL job and start selling GTCs for ISK for your main, and pay your main with a CC. There you go - less effort, more ISK, cheaper GTCs for everybody (else).
HAPPY NOW ?

You know, a lot of people have alts for things other than mission running.
Like, I dunno, probing, scouting, industry, and directly helping with combat (usually falcon alts from what I hear).

Its no mystery that missioning/ratting for ISK isn't a very efficient method of getting it. While the most efficient ingame method (scamming aside), still horribly ineffecient compared to sweeping a floor for a few hours and selling a GTC for 600mil.

Let me point out a fundamental fact about marketing.
Item value = reasonable. Item availability = not very high. Item demand = Very high. Item cost = Whatever the mug is prepared to pay.
Which leads to: Buyer = mug Seller = laughing all the way to the bank.
Get the idea?

Edited by: Doctor Penguin on 04/12/2008 10:21:37 I've just had a telephone call from my superiors within the USPR (United Socialist Penguin Republic) and they're calling this a thread a thread half full of reasonless OP bashing.
Put up some decent counter points, like Kulmid, Dantes Revenge or Frug, or get out of the thread.
Anyway, I agree that something has to be done about GTC inflation, but the higher it goes, the less alt abuse there is in game (as more people EMR over stupid prices). So this should be a self fixing problem.

The way I see it:
Players who play a lot make a lot of isk, so they buy GTC's, people who work a lot make less isk but they can sell GTC's. If the ballance between no life players and workers is tipping towards the no life's, then GTC's will go up, if more people would work and try to sell then price would go down.
Whats this break even thing you are talking about? break even with what? time spent in game vs work?

I think your mission running example is a bit bad one, as when you use that alt properly you will gain more isk with GTC funded alt than solo if you run missions for approx 6-8 h / week. Many mission runners do that.
Second aspect is ofc that if you need or want second account anyway, then as long as you 'break even' or take only slight loss you don't worry about it a lot. Let's say R&D datacores, POS gunners, Cyno alts, Capital alts, alt scouts ... etc, etc.
It's like sov claiming towers in 0.0. If you have them anyway you can as well use them even if they do not make profit.

Paying for a subscription with real money = Feels completely normal. Paying for imaginary items with real money = Feels weird and also feels a bit like cheating.
That's just the way that a lot of players think. No **** that a few hours of a job will pay for tons of isk via GTC, but if it takes away the harshness of the death penalty in EVE then suddenly the game isn't as fun anymore. Accomplishments are hollow without putting in the work, etc etc blah blah.
I'd rather have high GTC prices and less alts then everyone and their donkey having 2 alts and low GTC prices. --

Two accounts, both paid by debit card. Not the answer you were expecting, huh ?
I *used* to pay them with GTCs bought with ISK a while ago, when CCP's billing wouldn't accept my old debit card, made a new one, now it works. I seldom use the second account (and as such it certainly doesn't generate any ISK), so I was pondering for a while that if I could get a good price for it (far above market value) I'd actually consider selling it.

Lol Akita T, you was a serious poster and because of participating in this fail forum too much, you got dumber and are on your way to become a troll ? It's obvious that you are wrong here.
Let's take someone who does missions with 3 accounts. An average higsec bear will make 20mil/h with 1 account, maybe less with each additional account (has to switch a lot between clients etc.), so lets say 20+15+10 = 45m/h with 3 accounts. The point is, that if he spends the time in front of his PC doing missions with 1 account, he could also do that with 2 or 3, there is no time loss for him. And it's just a matter of time when he breaks even. A person having 3 accounts for missionrunning will usually be an active player, not part-time weekend missionrunner. Lets assume he does 2h / day, 60h each month.
Single account: 60h x 20m = 1.2 billion. After 300mil for 30d gtc thats 900mil isk per month.
Tripple account from example above: 60h x 45m = 2,7 billion. After 3x 300mil for 3x 30d gtc thats 1,8 billion per month.
Double as much for the same time spent, so why exactly is he "stupid" or "mathematically challenged" ?

You missed the point. It's a comparison between someone with 1 and 3 account playing 2h/day. If doing missions 2h/day makes you an isk farmer, then both of them are, but the one with 3 accounts actually makes double as much for the same time spend, thats why he's not the "stupid" or "mathematically" challenged one. In fact he makes even more than that, because he can keep on with skilltraing and sell characters or earn datacores on two additional accounts.

Yakia TovilToba, you're only "wrong" (intentionally in quotes) because you're making the mistake of assuming people on average would actually work like that at all. What you presented above would be the LUCKY FEW that actually do it like that.
How many people you know ACTUALLY get their second, third or whatever'th account and really use them at "full power" after a while ? Not many, I'll tell you. Most just end up sitting there leeching ISK for gametime while barely contributing close to the GTC cost, if that much at all in the long run. Most people go "hmm, hey, if I get a second account, I can make more ISK", then invest a lot of ISK into it (train/buy character, buy gear, etc) then end up "burning out" and getting too bored to do it anymore.
Sure, SOME don't burn out, and they are actually justified in getting an alt. MOST don't keep up, and they should get rid of them, pass them on to somebody who would end up actively using them until THEY burn out, and pass them along again.

Please let's try and keep this discussion reasonable and balanced guys. How about, if you disagree with Akita then why not shut your face?

Heh, if you plan well you can go a long way without a second account. I wouldn't even consider one unless I knew it would be worthwhile; I barely even use 1 character most of the time, let alone 3n. --- Can't afford that BPO? Look here. 20:1 mineral compression The EVE f@h team |

How many alts do you own? You seem to have first-hand experience, judging by what you wrote.
Let me tell you something-- people like me have multiple alts. Funded by time cards. None of which are revenue generators. I am not worried about breaking even. I have enough disposable income in real life that allows me to afford a reasonably lavish lifestyle in eve. As a "have," speaking to a "have not" .... TOO BAD!
I bet that makes you REALLY mad doesn't it?
Let this be an incentive for YOU to achieve more in life, so you can afford more in eve.
this.
as this guy and another mentioned earlier, why spend all that time farming isk when you could earn it real life? 2 hours over time and i can get meself a billion iskies. the only people who would sit and farm the isk seem to be chinese/******ed/have no friends....... |

I currently make about 100m an hour mining, i got 4 characters (soon to get 6), thats 6hours = 2 months for each char = about 24hours of mining = 4-6 days roughly.
That means that i have 54 days to mine and make a profit with, now tell me that isn't worth it. |

if you enjoy those 4-6 days then sure go for it. it just seems a waste of time. you could spend 3 hours working and use the cash earned to put the rest of those 4-6 days to better use. |

tbh gtfo ankita your getting annoying, anyways yea most ppl have alts and for many different reasons, personally i just find it easier logistically and better for training for to fly a variety of races across both accounts rather then 1. oh and do what the hell you want with your alt but if you cant afford to keep them don't complain just earn more whether it be in eve or in rl

Nope, but thanks from providing yet another example of why your posts should be ignored - there is no value to them, except to make you feel superior (even though they actually just show your lack of perspective outside your own ego)

I have two accounts; one indy and one pure pvp. The second one I started with the power of two deal and with the profits I've made from that char I've paid the sub for both accounts for a year and it keeps me in ships.
I agree that buying an alt just for PVE is stupid, UNLESS your main pvp char is a pirate and therefore you need an alt that can do missions in high sec.
