Hey quick qestion for those who loot and salvage.
For lvl 4 missions what is the best salvage ship to use? (maraders aside) IS it really worth it to use savage rigs? if so what is the best combo of salvage rigs and cargo extender rigs???
I have a salvaged rigged distroyer now. I am looking at rigging a hurrican fro salvaging. (more cargo)
thanks in advance for all the help and advice |

Use a rigged Destroyer to salvage everything into a can, bookmark the can's location, and come back and pick it up in an Industrial. If you Industrial ship skills are good, you won't even need any rigs and/or cargo extenders, just a plain old vanilla Industrial.
For extra giggles, salvage in the Industrial. At least you'll never run out of space... |

The best non-Marauder salvager is probably the Hurricane. Salvage rigs are absolutely worth it - I recommend three of them. With 4x tractors, 4x salvagers, and 3x salvage tackle rigs, I can almost always get 4 wrecks salvaged simultaneously.
Some missions will drop so much loot that even a Hurricane or Harbinger will have a full cargohold - on those missions make two trips, leave some stuff behind or come back with an industrial. ------------ Improvize. Adapt. Overcome. |

Absolutely. Bookmark the deadspace areas while running the mission, then turn in the mission and return in you salvacane. I have a couple of these ships at each station in my mission running constellation so I don't have to travel to loot.
Generall fitting should be something along the following lines:
High: 4x TB, 4x Salvager Mid: 1x AB, 1x MWD, 2x Cap recharges Low: 6x Expanded Cargohold II
Can hold 2,040 m3 of loot, or 2,490 m3 if you use a Huge Secure Container in the hold. This should be enough for almost any mission.
Cheers, Arrs

I can salvage the entire AE really fast including taking the loot in the cans.

I suggest you keep the destroyer as a secondary salvage ship. You can sell it later if you decide you like the Hurricane better.
Another option is to wait for a chance to give it (or loan it) away to a new mission running player that could use a bit of help in getting started. |

The Thrasher runs at a bit less than 500m/s with an ABII and some salvage rigs with the right level of rigging. THat means you never have to worry about actually maneuvering with it, because you'll never leave tractored wrecks or cans behind. With a couple of Cap Rechargers you never have to turn the AB off either. However, it tops out at aboug 650m^3 of cargo - and even a Tormentor can equal that.
The Salvacane is slow on AB, about 350m/s. WIth a battleship AB, as Ford Prefect says, it moves like fish, steers like a cow. Better (well, faster) to rely on MWD and use it to hurry between points at which you remain static and reel in the wrecks with tractors - you just have to take bookmarks as you go rather than relying on the accel gates to take you to each room in the mission. Not having to dock until you have 2040m^3 makes it the better choice in my opinion - I learned Matar Cruiser solely to fly the Cane to salvage with.
In both cases, with Salvaging IV and 3 Salvage Tackle Is, you are probably better off having 5 tractors and 3 salvagers - the salvagers work quickly enough that you don't end up waiting around. --- Some days you are the pigeon, and some the statue. |

My current favorite salvager is a salvage rigged Destroyer with 5 tractors/3 salvagers.
I can normally salvage a ship with a single salvager in one or two cycles so I never really stop moving, even with 5 tractors bringing the wrecks to me.
When the DDs hold gets full, I jettison what I have, and use the 5th tractor to keep that can close, then loot into that.

my setup is very simular...
highs: 5x tractor 3x salvagers
mids: 1x 10mn ab II 1x 100mn ab II 2x cap recharger
lows: 2x inerta stabs II's 2x nano II's 1x 1600mm plate 1x warp core stab
rigs: 3x salvage rigs
now, most will probably be like wtf, warp stabs and 1600 plate.., but at the same time, i live in a place where alot of wars happen, and i'm always grabbing loot from poped player shipwrecks.. you never know when you need a bit extra amror, or a way to avoid being pointed... ever warp into the wrong mission room?
also, the 100mn ab II is great for the lost distance trips in a mission site.
the inerta stabs help alignment time. warps faster. ____________________

Edited by: Cu3ball on 05/12/2008 21:44:12 I prefer 5 Tractors and 3 Salvage. For me it seems to work better. I used a destroyer for a long time until a friend said I should try a Hurricane and really glad now I did. 2k cargo, never run out of cap (as long as you use the AB) and has an AB and MWD. Overall, very happy.
My Setup: [Hurricane, Salvage] Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II
100MN Afterburner II 10MN MicroWarpdrive II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Salvager I Salvager I Salvager I
Salvage Tackle I Salvage Tackle I Salvage Tackle I
Hobgoblin II x5
Drones are for just in case. Not sure if I like the 10mm or the 100mm AB better. With the 10 I get around 350 m/sec, with 100 around 700 m/sec. The 10 is a little slower but cap stable with everything running and I dont out run my tractor beams. With the 100, a lot faster, cap last around 3 minutes with everything running and I outrun my beams. Choice is yours. Hope this helps.

I go with a Vigil. I can get about 1500m/s with less-than-perfect skills and using only a T1 afterburner. It's got three high slots for salvagers and has a very long targeting range so you can target the wrecks while still on the approach. You can fit a fair sized buffer shield tank in case the mission runner warps out and sticks you with aggro. I have cleaned out a number of people's L4 missions with this baby.
Of course, you should use a scan time bonused ship for the actual probing, then switch to this.

The difference is you're ninja salvaging, whereas the OP and most of the responders are looking for a salvage ship to do their own missions. Most of the salvage isn't that bulky, but the loot certainly is. Ninja salvage doesn't need tractors since you can't use them on someone else's wreck, and speed is important. If you're salvaging your own mission, speed is still nice, but tractors work, and cargo space is at a premium. When I was running level 2 missions I tried salvaging in a Condor for speed, but the cargo sucked. I went to a Kestrel and that worked fine, but now that I moved up to level 3 missions there are times when the kessie's 305 m3 (388.something with one Expanded Cargohold II) fills up before I'm finished. I've been toying with the idea of a Stabber, but that Salvagecane sounds like a winner. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

I prefer the Catalyst, unrigged .. its cheap to set up (5 trac, 3 salv, 1 ab, 1 cap recharger, 3 expanded cargohold t2 -> 829 m¦ cargo and decent speed) and so I do have more than one (atm 1 in every system where I regularly fly missions). In those missions where I get much more salv&loot than it can carry I put the stuff in a can and drag it to a convenient pickup location for my Badger or bookmark the place (if the mission is already given in).
I think I save much time with the in-system-salvager, more than I would actually save in salvaging with a rigged salvager which is located a few systems away and needs to be picked up first.

If you use a Marauder to actually do the mission, and gather up all the wrecks in one location during the mission, use a battle cruiser fitted with all salvagers and perhaps one tractor beam. Add 3 sensor boosters to increase lock time, MWD just in case there are cans further away, and cargo expanders.
If the wrecks are not gathered in one location, you need to wary the fitting a bit, with a balance of tractor beams and salvagers that let you work efficiently. Basically your tractors should keep wrecks coming in at a speed that is balanced to the rate you salvage them (I found 3 salvagers, 5 tractor beams to be right for me). You MAY also consider a smaller and faster ship... I used to use a destroyer, but the BC's greater cargo and cap stability makes it a better choice imho.
On any salvage setup, 3 salvage rigs are basically mandatory. Even if you got your salvage skill maxed, the rigs still more than double your salvage speed.

I use a Hurricane. After building about 20 rigs for assorted ships, I slowed down using my salvage.
Just for grins, I calculated how much they would be worth on the market if I were to sell them at market price. The total was over 600M.
I can build any T1 rig there is, after having invested in a full set of rigs BPO's. I don't even think about the price anymore, if I need a rig I build it. Mfr time is about 5 minutes.
Yes, salvaging is worth it.....

You're missing something though... ...and it comes down to cost and maneuverability.
Try any inexpensive T1 frigate, fit with a standard tractor, and voila, you have the fastest and least expensive way to group all of your loot. Forget the size of your cargohold - it's the same with your larger ships, as you won't be able to fit everything. So, kick out your own can, open it, and tractor it around. Fill it from every other can you find, and voila - you have a nice 27,000m3 cargohold.
Return with your Indy, and you have your stuff already packaged and loaded.
Choose to use a large ship, and if smart Ninja Salvagers (i.e. "we") find you, we'll bump the hell out of you while we fly around in our frigs and loot all your stuff.

The most efficient way to salvage a mission:
1) Mission in a crowded hub.
2) Call out in local, mentioning that you have a full field of wrecks to be salvaged.
3) Fleet any takers and allow them to warp to you.
Your mission will be salvaged promptly and efficiently and you don't have to lift a finger.
Enjoy!

Disclaimer: Sometimes, you'll even get to keep some of your salvage for yourself. Be polite, be courteous, and don't be an outright jerk. (Yes, we even have some Members in our Corp that will give you a fair 50/50 split on the salvage and loot, because for some strange reason, they see this as "good business". Go figure.)
