A note from the author, "Although I can't profess to be the most experienced in the matter, I have been charged by the powers that be to try and chronicle the course of the Shadows of the Dead from the point of my observations and experience. I must admit that looking back at SOD's history has been something of a hobby of mine, among other things I've done for the corp's leadership (which will only be disclosed at their blessing), and when the opportunity arose to formally chronicle our family of pilots I was elated to provide my perspectives on the corporation's time line. The reason for this time line, as I've now come to finish its final dates, has become less a hobby and more a labor for a love that's been lost. As thoughts, dreams, and actions of the world become the present, the present folds into the past, and the past forms the endless warp and weft that makes the tapestry of our world. Today, however, a part of that tapestry comes to an end."
-Tarannus
The Life of Shadows of the Dead
September 9, 2004
The formal creation of Shadows of the Dead. While nearly fifteen months before my story in Eve starts, I'll let a more experienced member frame that early picture.
"Originally, SOD was formed as a mining corp. Prowling through empire mining, from that boring existence our 30-odd members we became part of the Period Basis Coalition ([although that's] not the correct name) that was supported by the alliance that was at the time based in fountain, cleverly named Fountain Alliance. This was a time before formal alliances were an in-game mechanic. After this did not work out (I don't remember why) SOD was put into hibernation for 6+ months.
Once I became active again, we started fighting pirates in Rancer. I had an alt SSDC, which at the time was part of Forsaken Empire. Once we hit about 40 characters in SOD, we applied to join Forsaken Empire. Pershphanie sent us, more or less alone, to Q-TBHW. This was our first 0.0 home, our first POS, where from donations the corp purchased its first Dreadnaught. When FE fell, we were fairly seperated from the meat of the alliance due to the fact that it was Vale of the Silent that fell, and not Geminate. At this time, VOID was formed.
VOID itself ended up becoming a huge disaster. Lack of active corps, and bad leadership led to the fall of this short lived alliance."
-Javeir (CEO: Shadows of the Dead)
Thus well before I even joined, the corp had an extensive and dynamic history. Well before the idea of alliances as permanent gameplay fixtures, SOD was an active participant in player politics. At the same time, the membership held the corp in high enough regard that they were willing to donate their time and wealth towards a mutually better future. When capital ships were still a rarity, SOD membership invested in a Dreadnought through the generosity of its members. This corp spirit of sharing and investing in the future was, and is, an enduring legacy. It would be this generosity, and openness of SOD's many veterans, which would bring me into the 0.0 fold.
June 3, 2006
This date begins my formal story with SOD, and the same date that Goonfleet formalized themselves as Goonswarm. An ominous start in retrospect, perhaps, but at the time I was elated to finally be a part of the 0.0 big leagues.
SOD had just made a significant move the day I joined. Formerly a part of VOID, June 3 was the first day that the Shadows of the Dead flew under the banner of the Knights of the Southerncross. The destination: Insmother û TTP-2B. All seemed relatively well and stable in the world. These were the days of the great southern coalition. A time when Lotka Volterra, Veritas Immortalis, and Knights of the Southerncross were fighting against Red Alliance and had pushed them back to one station system.

Edited by: Javeir on 05/12/2008 04:35:57 All was not well, as I would come to find in hindsight. The fight against Red Alliance was not cohesive, and communication among the three alliances was limited. Numerous issues began to sprout. From RA's capitalization of a pro-European downtime to camp profitable Insmother and Great Wildlands complexes to a lack of communication from KOS leadership on the status of alliance affairs, the situation of KOS began to degrade rapidly. Political missteps and strategic miscalculations became grievous military errors which gave way to KOSes spectacular loss at N7-BIY. Seeing the gravity of the situation, and the lack of openness and expedience from the alliance leadership, SOD left to find more favorable ground.
Late September 2006
After mulling numerous alliance options, including tendering an offer to join Ascendant Frontier (which was rebuffed), SOD picked up its equipment and made the long trip across the galaxy to Fountain, becoming a part of Xelas, and have our first taste of life within the GBC. Our first destination would be TU-Y2A, but diplomatic conflicts between the Huns alliance and Xelas made that stay short lived. Through a serious of fortunate events, and personal connections between SOD's leadership and the various powers that be in the alliance (mainly Mitch Taylor), the corporation moved into PXF-RF. With the bountiful resources of a -1.0 truesec system, and less than ten jumps from Fountain core, SOD had an abundance of competitive PvP, worthwhile ratting, and extraordinarily lucrative mining opportunities.
"[O]ur main enemy was Celestial Apocalypse in the core of fountain. This was some of the first true, fun 0.0 small gang PVP that we took part in. The experiences here altered what SOD would strive to become & focus on."
-Javeir
This bounty attracted the ire of Xelas for numerous reasons, but internal politics had to be set aside. With the declaration of Ascendant Frontier's titan, BoB formally invaded and triggered the formal beginning of the Great War. Dusk and Dawn, sensing a strategic opening, invaded Fountain to capitalize on BoB's mobilization in the south.
"At this time, Xelas was off doing their own thing, and we were fighting against all the hostiles in Core alone. When Mitch left Xelas, we knew things were headed downhill, and started to plan ahead."
-Javeir
Fountain core, long neglected by Xelas leadership after the departure of Mitch Taylor, became the front on which our corporation would try and hold the line. While the most of the alliance looked towards the defense of PNQY-Y, several friendly corps (such as Coreli Corporation) and SOD would try to engage in harassment tactics to keep D2 and Insurgency alliance at bay. Over time this war of attrition exposed significant strategic and diplomatic flaws in Xelas's leadership which would prompt the corp's leadership to create an alliance based on addressing the mistakes of the past.

Departing from Xelas, SOD joined with Master Miners to found Aftermath Alliance. In its earliest months, Aftermath would have its combat worth tested as the only significant GBC force actively operating near Fountain core.
D2's occupation force, with assistance from Insurgency, had fully settled in Fountain by the beginning of February 2007 and began to exert their influence in earnest. Most of the major military conflicts between Aftermath, Insurgency, and D2 were largely roaming gangs, gate camps, and extended ratting harassment engagements designed to keep pilots uncomfortable and wary on both sides. Although some minor POS warfare did occur, most of these actions were limited and did not spill over into extended sieges. Very few, if any, sovereignty conflicts were ever initiated by either side. Nonetheless D2 was either distracted or unable to hold a significant territorial foothold in Fountain outside of the NPC region, keeping pressure off BoB's assets and outpost infrastructure. Because of these actions Aftermath gained some measure of political recognition from the Band of Brothers û only paying 3 weeks of rent as tenants until Aftermath departed from the GBC, almost a year later.
May 10, 2007
These were the salad days for SOD û a time when its political connections kept the corp and Aftermath reasonably powerful. For me, this was the first time I would come to hold power in a player corporation as an officer of economic and demographic affairs. It was also the first period when SOD formalized itself from a semi-nomadic POS existence to a fully-fledged owner and operator of territory. Beginning in early May, as Fountain began to loosen up, Aftermath joined up with a substantial Mercenary Coalition fleet to acquire territory in the north. Attacking the Imperial Republic of the North and their many outpost assets, SOD formally claimed JU-OWQ on May 13, 2007 with considerable assistance from other ôNew Northö colonists such as Vigilance Infinitas, M.Pire, Storm Armada, and YouWhat. During these times, SOD membership would grow from a steady 175 to some 250 pilots of all capabilities, time zones, and varying degrees of personal quirkiness. The same could be said for the alliance in general.
All in all, it was peaceful until Triumvirate began their invasion of the North some ten weeks later. While all the corporations of Aftermath did their best to try and stem the invasion as long as possible, even going so far as to have Master Miners claim VFK-IV from Tri sovereignty after Vigilance Infinitas departed from the region.
"Once Tri decided they wanted Deklien, VI folded in less than a week. With some amazing logistical work, 24+ large POS's, we managed to obtain VFK before Tri Did. A few weeks later, fighting mostly unaided against enormous odds, Aftermath lost its first station."
-Javeir
The war, now growing from ship to ship PvP to an extended POS siege, was calculated to be too expensive for the Alliance's fragile budget to maintain. In the interests of preserving what resources that could be salvaged, Aftermath and SOD departed from Deklein to travel the width of the galaxy for a new home. On July 26, JU-OWQ left Aftermath's and SOD's ownership for the final time.

For nearly two weeks, SOD used its political connections within BoB to find a new and stable presence in 0.0. Aftermath was given authority to live in Paragon Soul & Esoteria. SOD would come to claim ownership of a station in GQ2S-8, and MASMI would operate 111-F1. Twenty-five days later, Aftermath would claim LX5K-W for a six-week period from a FREGE Alliance occupation force, but rescind ownership to Reikoku under authority from BoB. During this period, Aftermath would also begin to make friendship with a corporation known as HOMELESS from the Band of Bums alliance û a relationship with fortuitous consequences.
Curiously enough, it would be this move that would bring Aftermath to its membership apex and full industrial capabilities. Before conflicts would once again force Aftermath and SOD to move, the alliance held 5 corporations with a total membership of over 500 people. This group would eventually hold enough resources to produce some of the game's largest vessels. At the height of the alliance's occupation in the south, Aftermath would construct its first supercapital vessel, a Wyvern class mothership, built by Abram of Master Miners.
Although these achievements were impressive, SOD once again claimed 0.0 space, and action against the Red Alliance / Goonswarm coalition was plentiful, the burdens of Paragon Soul logistics and constant internal political conflicts began to wear on leadership and membership alike. Complaints over contributions to the defense of Paragon Soul strained the once friendly ties of MASMI and SOD. Criticisms over military strategy and POS contributions became heated contests of egos, further souring relations.
Compounding these internal problems was the steady advance of the anti-BoB coalition into Eve's deep south. When tempers were beginning to come to a head, BoB ordered a general retreat to consolidate their remaining forces. Having experienced a long litany of dislocation, the order to evacuate solidified SOD's resolve to reestablish independent control of their territorial affairs. The decision was made to hold out in GQ2S-8 for as long as reasonably possible and evacuate to empire instead of BoB-controlled space. In doing so, SOD's informal and politically friendly ties to the GBC were largely severed. Neither Aftermath nor SOD would hold another outpost.
November 11, 2007
Breaking from the GBC, the decision was made to establish a name for the alliance as an itinerant PvP force by relocating to the Curse region. This move had the added effect of reducing Aftermath's membership from 5 corprorations down to SOD and MASMI.
The decision to move from ôopenö 0.0 to NPC spaced was a significant change for the corporation. Not since the fighting in Fountain core had the corp operated in such an environment, and combat adaptations had to be made quickly. Because of SOD's long affiliation with the GBC local alliances within Curse acted in myriad ways, most of which were in varying degrees of hostility. Although attempts were made to try and carve out a small regional niche where the Alliance could safely conduct its business, Aftermath's venture in Curse proved to be mortal. Conflicts between SOD and MASMI finally grew from competitive egos to full scale political acrimony, fragmenting Aftermath's most significant contributors beyond repair.

Efforts to capitalize on fundamental changes to Eve's gameplay, predominantly in the field of Tech 2 blueprint invention, persuaded corporate leadership to tender its first and only IPO. Intended to exploit the invention of Marauders, Black Ops, and Jump Freighters, the IPO was an ambitious program designed to raise SOD's operating capital while pooling small scale member donations. The costs of entry were fairly moderate - 100 million ISK per share, but the appeal was such amongst corp that 15 billion ISK total was raised. Unfortunately this endeavor failed, due to lack of demand of the new Tech 2 ships compunded by inflated build costs. Losing 60% of its value after 4 months, and the investors paid back mostly in components and BPC's,this was the first, and mercifully last, IPO that SOD ever offered to its membership.
While the rest of SOD continued to find friendly and welcoming pastures, I departed for a long internship to Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. Although physically unable to play the game, I kept in contact with the leadership as much as possible as they made their way through Dawn of Darkness, Vae Victis, and Roadkill. The memory of this era shall have to be written by another within SOD, but it might be best said that both alliances held traces of the same flaws which brought the realization that KOS, Xelas, and Aftermath were untenable ventures.
January 8th, 2008
Approached by Mitch Taylor, SOD was invited to join the Dawn of Darkness. Fountain was out of BoB control due to the war in the south and the GBC condensed for a final stand in Delve. SOD accepted the offer and moved back into Fountain Core, while the rest of the alliance resided in Cloud Ring. Deciding not to erect anything but a POS for safe Capital ship movement, SOD began to resharpen its skills in a combination of fast moving and remote rep battleship gangs.
When Mitch Taylor departed from Dawn of Darkness back to Band of Brothers SOD, once again, found itself leading an alliance. Making up more than half of the Dawn of Darkness membership, SOD continued to PVP as much as possible. During this time SOD was mostly inactive as part of the GBC, only a few pilots made the trips or set a clone in Delve to fight against the RA/Goonswarm. When BoB reset standings to non-participating members of the GBC, SOD & Dawn of Darkness were on the list. The reactions and fallout from this time cause the terminal separation of SOD as a friend of BoB and the GBC.
SOD shortly found itself outnumbered 10 to 1. Some of the best and worst times in SOD's history were about to come to pass. SOD harassed the locals to no end, causing them to band together. At the height of hostilities, over 5 alliances and 4 independent corps camped the NPC stations we had resided in for weeks. The camps, numbering up to 100 hostiles, eventually caused SOD to look elsewhere to call home. Though some epic remote rep battleship fights, carrier ganks, and skirmish's ensued, SOD quickly realized it could not sustain this level of PVP without a solid source of income for the membership, which we did not have.

"From an insanely fun & overwhelming bout in fountain, we were approached by Vae Victus, a two corp alliance based in Querious. This became an unsteady venture from the beginning, Vae Victus being blue to Goonswarm. When the goons heard we had joined VV, they quickly threatened to set Vae Victus red. Only some firm negotiations from Vae Victus's leadership kept alliance relations where they were at. From there, holding a station, and being stuck between Goons, BoB, and AAA things were bound to fail eventually - and they did. Vae Victus's stations were lost, and this brief period SOD's history is left behind.
We then joined Roadkill, returning to our first 0.0 home of Geminate. Where Q-TBHW before was quiet, it now has connections to the drone region along with a station built in system. Usually packed to overpopulation, we decentralized and focused more on PVP, letting the members use the extensive jump bridge network RK had in place to keep themselves funded. A few months down the road, RK began losing systems quickly. For both internal reasons & alliance level political reasons, SOD decided to depart RK."
-Javeir
Although I became an active member by the third week of June 2008, SOD leadership was in the midst of relocating to yet another alliance û Daisho Syndicate. At this point SOD had nearly made a full diplomatic circle from GBC to the RA-Goon Coalition, but working with the alliance was problematic from the outset. SOD's reputation, for reasons likely too multitudinous to adequately describe, had earned the full enmity of the two competing blocs.
"Without knowing that Diasho was about to take RK stations, we ended up joining only weeks before Goonswarm offered them BWF - one of the stations we had previously used with RK. We had no real political ties to RK, and chose to stay along with Daisho. Joining Diasho, Goons threatened to reset Diasho because of SOD, just as they did when we joined Vae Victus"
-Javeir
Only through the force of Daisho's alliance leadership, and in a game of brinkmanship with Goonswarm diplomacy, did SOD have a new home in Geminate. Unfortunately, Isaac Orion's leadership of the alliance became erratic and then absent almost as soon as the corp had integrated into the alliance. Concerned about the political health of the alliance, SOD's leadership decided to relocate towards more stable territory.
August 30, 2008
After SOD's interlude in Geminate, the corporation joined old friends from Aftermath & Vae Victus to firmly settle in Fountain with the Elitist Cowards alliance. The initial period of settlement was generally favorable. Many pilots were simply happy to return to the region which saw the birth of SOD's political and military power. Others saw EC as a chance to finally shake off the political stigma of eve's polar superpowers by working with Pandemic Legion. Nearly every pilot was just happy to have an alliance that seemed to have some basic competence and a sense of clear-cut direction, with both solid leadership & solid members.
Although many pilots were happy to be back in Fountain, SOD once again met up with political stiffness from alliance leadership. Despite assurances from people, such as Fir Q, that the corp's performance was positively received, the decision to place the corporation on ôprobationaryö status was irksome by Directors, Officers, and Members alike. This sudden downgrading by the EC leadership motivated SOD to try and provide more meaningful (and bountiful) PvP contributions on the next scheduled alliance operation in Venal. Capital assets were mobilized in order to provide the maximum amount of logistics to prove SOD's combat capabilities.

It has been a great honor flying with everyone in SOD for all these years. I canÆt believe that IÆve been in SOD for over three years and as my first corporation in EVE, I am glad to say it was so worth it. It has been a fun ride and IÆm saddened by the closure, but I know that we will still be friends in game and out of game even if were on the other side of each others guns :D
As Co-CEO and longtime SOD member I want to wish everyone in SOD good luck and hope we all keep in touch. I will keep the SOD forums up for everyone so we can still communicate with each other.

Edited by: Javeir on 05/12/2008 04:37:34 . This corp has been an integral part of my life for over 4 years, with over 600 total pilots, a few of whom I now call my friends. This part of my life, this part of eve, has run its course. I'd like to thank Tarannus for taking the time to chronicle the history of SOD, as well as the handful of people who have taken part in leading the corp over the many years - you all know who you are. Our focus was always to have the best experience we could for our members, and in general I believe we met that goal. I will miss eve, and even more so SOD, but as time goes by all things must come to an end. My final thank you is to everyone out there, playing eve, that made this experience as great as it was.

nice post
SOD was a solid corp. I've seen them from the inside/out
I was in one of those alliances (black star) that perma camped you in NPC space in fountain..lol After my corp(Templars of Space) left that failing alliance we ended up in Insurg--after insrg died, our corp merged with you dudes when you were in daisho (some time later). Daisho wasnt such a good alliance (couldnt stand alliance leadership - reason i left) and it seems you continued to make unlucky decicions. Its a shame such a good corp has to part like this but i totally understand the affect all these fail alliances had on you guys.
Hope you guys all find good homes
was a pleasure flying with(for a short time) and against you.

Javeir,
I remember the times we talked during our first alliance together, I can't say we were the closest of friends as we only talked a few times but I do remember the C-J6 invasion and watching how 'Not' to run an alliance from KOS.
I remember watching as both our corps were some of the few that fought, and died down south and then both left at the same time after the leadership of that alliance proved what everyone knew.
I did track you guys, and even some former corp mates that went over to SOD would come back saying only positive things about your corp. I watched as you formed or joined various alliances and despite being red or neutral to each other many times I did still quietly wish you and your members would find a good home. It's weird, I guess you can call it just wishing for a good result for a good group that you fought and died beside. Even if it was so long ago.
I really wish it didn't come to this for your corp because I really don't believe you and yours deserve that fate. I know some asshats will probably come mess up this thread later on but I do wish (all) of you well and hope you find good homes. I know the road hasn't been easy, but I do hope you find a good strong corp to call home. My corp has been down a similar path, we have moved past much of the game and do talk to each other about our lives and keep tabs on each other. For that reason I hope your all able to keep the same friendships going among your group.
*salute*

Confirming this history of bailing out of alliances roughly around the minute things looked less-than-rosy. Kinda sad that you guys decided to commit seppuku rather than try to turn that trend around, but c'est la vie.

No sense trying to explain it to people who don't innately understand it. Suffice to say that it's easy to join an corp/alliance/whatever when things are going awesomely, but the real test of character and worth comes from what you decide to do when things begin to go poorly.
Also the common factor in all your failed relationships is you, but that's another matter for another post.

You know... too be honest, I'm a little disappointed I wasn't mentioned ANYWHERE in that wall'o'history. Anyways, I had some amazing times in SOD. In the year flying with you guys as a normal pilot to finally achieving a leadership role as an Officer, I had learned an enormous amount of knowledge of the EVE universe. SOD taught me how to PVP. SOD taught me how to become a better player. Funny thing, I joined SOD with only 8m skill points. Now sitting at 30m SP, I can say that without you guys... I don't think I would be here...
Cheers to SOD and the future... you guys rock

Confirming this history of bailing out of alliances roughly around the minute things looked less-than-rosy. Kinda sad that you guys decided to commit seppuku rather than try to turn that trend around, but c'est la vie.
P.S., a clarification. Vae Victis. (spelling, spelling!) never owned any stations. We used the RZR-owned station in I1Y.
Yea cause they should stay in Fail alliances that get WTFBBQ'd or collapse because of ******ed leaders?
Well at least you took your own advice...

No sense trying to explain it to people who don't innately understand it. Suffice to say that it's easy to join an corp/alliance/whatever when things are going awesomely, but the real test of character and worth comes from what you decide to do when things begin to go poorly.
Also the common factor in all your failed relationships is you, but that's another matter for another post.
he was in SOD for like ,3 weeks. long after Vae Victis(which in my opinion, only redeeming quality was attackin BOS so hard they merged into IAC)
VV was in trouble from the start, and if you believe otherwise, so be it. 3 corps (NOQ, TRIE, and SOD) could not have held off the entire GBC as they just started to start on the attack on Querious (i still have the screenshot of us running from Shrike in PF- in Querious when that IT gang we chased over the constellation)there is a difference from running when things start to look less than perfect, and getting the hell out of dodge when you're about to be steamrolled.

I won't argue with you re: the VV political situation, because you are mostly right there. We banked on certain events working out, they didn't, and from there there was nothing left to do but enjoy the rest of the ride down. You decided that the ride down could not be fun, and left. SoD was my first 0.0 corp and I am proud to have been a member. My experience with them has shaped who I am as a pilot and the standard to which I hold other corporations. Fortune was not always kinda to SoD, but the corp soldiered through the worst of it and seized upon opportunities as they came. SoD was always about growth, pushing the limits of what we thought we could do and looking for new challenges. I wish the best to all my old corpmates and offer what little influence I have towards securing a new future for themselves. I know I'll be seeing you guys now and again in the cold void of space; but until then, fly safe and be proud.

Oh what a surprise, SoD are disbanding. I actually think it's funny this thread has gotten as much attention as it has. There wasn't anything special about this corp, had a few decent FC's, that's about it. As for the actually members, just a bunch of random scrubs, who think it's funny to pop in a channel and think it's funny to be an assclown. I wonder if their one member still continues to lose a Gistii-Crow to drakes every single day? Ah well, once again doesn't surprise me that the corp emo quits a final time, maybe this time they will cut themselves deep enough. |

Hey mate, long writeup, but then of course SOD has had a long history with lots of variety in homes and friends.. I know that closing a corp you put allot of effort in is quite dreadful, but it happens, life is change and so things can never forever stay the same.
My experience with SOD is one of mixed feelings. I was the CEO of NCM, a corp that briefly entered the Aftermath alliance just before and during the assault of TRI on PANIC command in JU-. Jav you basically took me into the alliance, made sure NCM got a chance to move onto .0 for the first time and had enough trust in me and NCM to gave it a try. Unfortunately things went downhill pretty quick, due to a forced absense on my part.
The mixed feelings I have, is actually reflected by the post of both you jav, and of Tarannus. Your writeup has the feeling of an endless struggle, trying hard, and in the end, not succeeding in anything worth of making you feel succesful. This is.. in essence, how i experienced the time with SOD, and the alliance for that matter and just not because of the situation with TRI, this ran deeper then just a temporal situation. This was a basic attitude that is adherent to the unavoidable problems of leadership. The atmosphere became ¦cold¦ because of this, probably with warm moments, sure, undoubtedly, but the overall character was cold.
The biggest obstacle of any leader, is to overcome the feeling of struggling with problems and to reflect enjoyment rather than struggling onto your fellow pilots. To reflect the struggle, that is clearly present in this writeup, onto your pilots, is to in essence the downfall that makes it unable for a corporation to feel succesfull. My ingame skills are, as you noticed back in the day, not worth mentioning, but i¦d like to think that i do have a sense on leadership.
I believe this to be the cause of your corporate problems that forced you to lay your weapons down.. And i give you this information with the hopes that your next project.. your next investment, will become one of a better character, because as time moves on, we better strive to become better ourselves..
On an ending note, i'd like to link to a topic i made in general discussion, where I argue that the sense of accomplishment that eve can provide is just as real as any kind of accomplishment. Perhaps, it can sooth the transition to know that the memories of SOD were, and are, worth worth remembering no matter the opinions of others.
Good luck with all of your future projects.. i¦m sure, that once your spirits are back, they will be full of enjoyment and .. this time, a true sense of joyous accomplishment. It's just a game, right?

Anyway thanks to SOD, my first PVP & 0.0 corporation when I was nubbin of 5million SP that couldn't even fly a ceptor.
To everyone saying this is a fail history read again. We made some bad choices sure, but we fought and fought every time until there was no way we could keep on fighting. I have fought now in almost every region of EVE (except for the NC far northern space) with SOD. And every time flying with my corp mates was the best time in this game.

I actually feel bad now. I was the one that got vae victus in trouble with goon right after you joined.
Now I'd been shooting Shadows for as long as I'd been in 0.0. So we had the corp set red at both the corp and alliance level. So when a Goon FC I knew asked me what reds there were to shoot at in the Core, I told him I'd see what I could rustle up. They had roamed most of Delve and seen squat all so they decided to come up to Fountain.
My guys took a handful of tech I cruisers and went to see what you guys were doing. Eventually we got one of your carriers to undock and even got it just off undock of the station. In swoops the Goons, and as we're all popping to fighters (which was expected) I get across MSN "They're ****ing BLUE!"
Result of that was a two hour convo about who Shadows of the Dead was and that I'd spent forever shooting at them as part of the GBC. Vae Victus was in hot water the next day.
Most of my kill history in Fountain was made up of Shadows of the Dead. Probably most of my losses as well. It was quite fun, for quite a long time.

Originally by: Javeir Edited by: Javeir on 05/12/2008 04:39:17 Curiously enough, it would be this move that would bring Aftermath to its membership apex and full industrial capabilities.
Not doing e-peen waving just trying to make any who think thats not much an achievement see otherwise now days making a MS or titan is easy yes they get pumped out now and the difficultys in producing them has been greatly reduced. However at the time MASMI started prodction its MS MC who where very supercap heavy still only had a few (i would guess about 10 max) tri had not yet built one and generally they were very powerful (before interdictors could even bubble them). Along with that production started 2 weeks before soverenty levels were introdced and with them cyno jammers capital systems ect so the production POS was open to attack at any time and in hostile space well away from where we were based. Only about 8 people in the alliance (In SOD only Javier and one other i believe) knew of and took part in its construction including ninja moving 4 friegters 8 jumps back and forth in and out of 0.0 over the course of 12 hours making god knows how many trips.
Originally by: Javeir
The decision to move from ôopenö 0.0 to NPC spaced was a significant change for the corporation. Not since the fighting in Fountain core had the corp operated in such an environment, and combat adaptations had to be made quickly. Because of SOD's long affiliation with the GBC local alliances within Curse acted in myriad ways, most of which were in varying degrees of hostility. Aftermath's venture in Curse proved to be mortal. Conflicts between SOD and MASMI finally grew from competitive egos to full scale political acrimony, fragmenting Aftermath's most significant contributors beyond repair.
Was my Ego really that bad?
On a more serious note from my point of veiw what killed aftermath in curse was the lack of a concerted effort by the member base (and i mean both MASMI and SOD) to clear a place in curse everyone just wanted to carebear (certainly in MASMI i might be wrong about SOD) and to not fight and dont get me wrong i was not there as much as i would like as i was busy with Uni. On top of that MASMIs CEO was dealing with rl which did not help things on our end.
I had some great times in aftermath including one week of farming kills against KOS and some good times in fountain and i was sad when the alliance broke up. I made some good friends in that time.
Its a shame to see you break up too now but im sure i will see some sodites around and wish you the best of luck with whatever you go on to do i might even poke you on MSN some time Javier see what your up to.

I didn't put this in my earlier post so I feel like I should now.
As an Officer in SOD I was focused mainly on production and running that part of the corp so my PVP after I took those responsibilities obviously suffered as a result, I want to thank and recognize some of my fellow SODites.
Ham for recruiting me and showing me the ways of the true 0.0 Carebear (I miss my Obelisk)
Kol who left us to rejoin the GBC but was my best SOD bud
Perf for his quiet yet constant upkeep of our infrastructure and always being there to help.
Ditch for every time he led us as FC, that crazy Canadian kills everything.
Jav/Aelena for the countless hours of work they put in to making SOD run over the years.
DCeet for his epic noobness o/\o he has grown into a fine pilot
LV for letting me tag along when all I could fly was ceptors and all the times we beat the crap out of KOS
Beckard for going bat**** crazy and soloing a Mega in his Mrymidon... and winning.
Dragonie... for only having 1.
and the countless other pilots I flew with these were my growing years in EVE where I learned everything from 0.0 life and how to PVP.
Thanks for the times everyone. I look forward to the future now.

Helen is someone who lost a Mom a long long time ago if I remember correctly and is someone I had to ban from our recruitment channel due to being an a**
Significant enough to be remembered and replied to! Also I probably did get banned from your recruitment channel but I was probably trying to stop people who didn't know better joining a crap corp.

SoD took me in as part of a corp acquisition right before the whole SoT/PL - EC war went down.
Even though I only got to spend a month and a half with them, it was an absolutely fantastic month and a half.
My first taste of real PvP, alliance PvP, POS warfare, and alliance life in general... all interesting stuff I intend to continue to do.
The personalities that made up this corp were excellent. I wish SoD would live on further but as Javeir said, all things come to and end.
Thank you Javeir, for giving me a chance to see what a great corp is, and for taking in someone as inexperienced as myself.
To all the SoD members, wish I could've gotten to know you all better. You're an awesome bunch and I'm going to miss the corp.
Thanks for everything SoD. ==============================

Thanks Javeir for the post means alot to read it and see what we all did together.
I entered the corp as part of an acquisition of -FW a small pvp band of friends that needed a bigger corp... (Kaldin was our fearless leader :P, Perf our mining expert, and Ditchdoctor... well I don't know what he was doing with us... but he always was uncle DD to us) and that was a great decision on our part. To have joined a group of friends who took on the good and the bad, who actually made a name in the areas they were in and fought bravely was a great thing for me. I enjoyed flying with you guys, to share the losses, the wins and the moves... oh the moves...
I know we will all keep in touch, and that things may have not worked out but we always know we did what we could with what we had. Thanks all of you for putting up with Mr. I Talk Alot (Malev).
Wish I could mention all the guys that made a difference in my SOD experience but I can't it will suffice to say that there are few who didn't make a difference, all were great to me even when i couldn't talk on Vent... damn isp...
Great times, great roams... a note of thanks for all of those that flew with and against us, it was great, we had a great ride and it will be remembered....

Actually this is the bit where it gets interesting. First of all my main Helen was in STK which was in MPIRE at the time, you might remember them as blues based in the region of Branch. My alt was in Coraco Ardente part of Triumvirate (that small alliance that kicked your ass) and was there first hand to watch you scuttle away from Dek like you did from every other region that had the frightening prospect of pvpers only a few systems away.
PS. It was STK alongside Celes that beat your ass in Fountain too.
So in summary learn your eve history and "should of stayed a mining corp".

When Mitch left Xelas, we knew things were headed downhill, and started to plan ahead." -Javeir
A little bit of a mix up there, it was ASCN that came to fountain when BOB wnet after them. Mainly STK Scientific, who teamed up with Celest to fight us in and around core.
D2 came down to fountain during the first great war, along with Sparta who set up shop in WY.

That and destroy nearly all of Xelas production and sov holding pos in Fountain over the course of 3 weeks yeah we held PNQ for over a week without it being touched. Pretty much I'll add without any proper fleet action mostly our cap fleet operating unhindered while ganking your many many ratters and miners.
No wonder after the events that occured in PNQ and elsewhere in Fountain did BoB decide that finally Xelas was more of an embarrasment than a proper ally.

SoD was basically dead on its own then and you probably know it.

Edited by: Selk Cantor on 07/12/2008 00:03:07 SOD was in Aftermath Alliance Helen, never Sparta and those guys. At the time AA was allied with VI, Sparta and that other Deklein alliance I can't remember the name of that was alot of ex-Xelas (edit:Storm Armada!). TRI bought off VI management, which fled Deklein after 24-36 hours of fighting. TRI was left fighting Aftermath, an alliance 1/4 their size. Granted Sparta gave support, but from a distance. Aftermath held out against TRI longer than any of the other Deklein alliances at the time, but 1500v300 is a problem, especially when the cap ratio was even worse.
My notable positive memories of SOD were: -Fighting like hell in Fountain and doing great guerilla work, mainly versus D2 -Holding our last stand against TRI in Deklein -Being one of the few allies who stood on the field with RISE when the bigillion Goons were moving in.
On a negative note: -Leaving Curse after lack of participation and effort against TCF. -The "aftermath" of Curse, when Master Miners and SOD parted. That was like Lancelot leaving Arthur. -The subsequent leaving the GBC. Up until this point, though SOD had moved through alliances, they remained true to the core of their allies and most of those former alliance mates.
I think the fracturing of the SOD/Master Miners relationship was a long term mortal wound. Before then, good times or bad, those two could always bounce back.

I've had some crazy times with this corp, taking part in a Titan kill in fountain, to being hated by both Goons & the GBC. I will always remember the alarm-o-clock ops, the staying up all night dropping 20 large towers in a day, the fleet engagements, small & large roaming gangs. At our peak, we hit over 450 kills a week.
I don't know where I'll go from here, chances are its time for me to go and see what the sky looks like again :)
Some of you will laugh at the experiences we've had, some will cheer - but know in the end, I would trade it for nothing in this world.

Why talk abot stuff you dont know the first thing about? AA had alot more numbers than tri when we sent there pathetic alliance packing, and sod never made any kind of last stand, against tri they just packed up and ran, when tri took deklien sparta was the only alliance that even tried to defend there space and that was a very poor token effort every other corp or alliance just folded and gave up including sod.

Before then, good times or bad, those two could always bounce back.

prez tbh you are the one thats wrong TRI did outnumber aftermath that is fact end of discussion. We may not have lasted out as much as Javier said however VI folding to Tri within 24 hours or so of you dropping an intial POS or 2 in their system did not help there were other things and yes we lacked alot of things but you very much had numbers in your favour in 1:1 terms. If you included our supposed allies and yours then things were more even, but we did not recieve too much help from them.

I was a very active pvper in Aftermath at the time, I remember it quite well. The fact is, Aftermath had only Shadows of the Dead, Master Miners and Pyrrhus Sicarii. Any additional corps joined after we retreated Deklein. At the time SOD had roughly 200-300 members and MM had less, like 100, Pyrrhus was even smaller at like 80. TRI had 1500 members at the time. It was before the big growth spurt when you guys took in alot of Northern corps like Dragons of Redemption or whatever, but you still had coracao ardente, D00M, Murder-Death-Kill, omen, Rionnag Alba, ViperSquad, Wreckless Abandon and maybe Exanimo Inc. Just look at the old killboards. Aftermath perma-camped JU- for two weeks straight. Sure we didn't hold out for months, but we held out longer than anyone else and we were fighting 3 times our numbers on US time, probably more like 5-6:1 on Euro time.
That's why it makes me laugh when TRI complains about being zerged by the NC. You made that bed back then, when you chose to fight all of the NC competition in the North, because they were the smaller of the two sides and much easier to pick on. Sure it was probably more fun at the time, but don't pretend it was your elite playerbase looking for the heavyweight fight. I think you are thinking of the VI alliance that didn't fight and moved out immediately when aggressed. They were probably 500 members bigger than TRI, but that was as much TRI's fault they didn't get a fight from them. When you destroy the alliance with spies and get their member CEOs and FCs to switch sides and join your corps before fighting starts, it kind of convinces people to leave the alliance.

Circumstances at the time meant we regarded MM/RZR with a certain respect the new north coalition of VI/AA/Sparta/MPIRE didn't sit well with TRI so they were the natural target not TRI's fault that those alliances in Deklein had lower alliance numbers but more blues... After all whats the point in blueing others unless they are helping you blow stuff up? Start quoting numbers and we can quote them back TRI was outnumbered fighting the alliances resident and blue to each other in Deklein at that time not our fault you couldn't organise a proper fight back which to be honest was what we hoped for.
Personnaly having fought SoD in Fountain and Deklein and where else I found them I saw them lacking in both pvp quality and duration. But like I said "should of stayed a mining corp". Have a good day o/

First off I've got to say to Tunna and Kol.... YOU'RE TWO ARROGANT DOUCHEBAGS! Jav mentioned less than a handful of names and you seriously think that you two noobs were significant enough to merit recognition among the FEW names that were mentioned?!??
Well, I do. But honestly... he would have had to make countless posts just to fit all of the memories and names of the people that made SoD great. And lets make this clear, SoD was GREAT. :) Nothin but love, guys.
Was a good read, and brought back tons of memories.
I was recruited into SoD by the one called tunna-fish, a former alliance mate of mine. Fortunately, FuC failed due to unavoidable leadership absence.(I was the absent leader lol).. I say fortunately because if it hadn't, then I would have never joined SoD.
In the Eve universe I've had many epic and memorable experiences... The vast majority of these experiences were with my friends in SoD. I flew with SoD at first in Curse... and have flown with them ever since. (On-and-off lately due to RL)
The best times ever were in Fountain core... Nothing could have ever surpassed the experience that I gained and the things I learned from the members in that time.
I wont go into details, but reading through this thread i've seen a lot of familiar names... Names that I've seen on both ends of killmails over the passed year or so. I respect most all of you, friends and enemies alike.
There have been too many friends in SoD for me to say farewell to. I may contact some of you in the near future (after the holidays, that is) to see about plans for what will happen next.
Fly safe' or not, depending on your preference.

I am the tunna. And Kooter my god where the hell have you been!?! Now there's a man that who can really lose a carrier in style! Man the memories we've had, the hours on TS while in fountain core where I would randomly hear. "I GOT ONE!" *20 recons go rushing into yz-. Lol, man we need to fly again buddy, I still don't know anyone who flies a pilgrim as well as you do, and a curse that costs 3 times as much blow up so quickly.
My favorite memories of SOD wow I need to make a list. Ok, I'll start off with this.
1) I see tri are still reminiscing of their former glroy. lol, THE EGO'S JIM! THE EGO'S! Anywho JU and VFK were the most expensive fights I've ever been in lol. That last stand at JU where perf was delivering a freighter of minerals that ended getting ganked that turned into the most random fight that escelated for 2 hours on the JU gate. Anywho we ended up going down once tri allies started swarming in, and the minerals that were to be used for rebuilding battleships screwed us over in the long run for ship replacements. oh well, meh.
2) KOS nuff said
3) Ah fountain core. Lol, we became really good friends with norman didn't we? lol, anywho between NASA, Bruce, blackstar alliance, and whoever random alliance comes targets were not hard to come by.
4) When we were in RK and scooter1 freaked out on us and went crazy. "GUYS WERE GOING TO ABANDON OUR STATIONS IN GEMINATE AND ATTACK GOONS FROM EMPIRE! YES!!" but seriously the fights agains IRC/ED were fun. =)
so long SOD and many partings to one of the GREATEST corps I've ever seen and had the priveledge of flying with.

That's a pretty amazing statement considering you weren't even a member of TRI, until 2-3 months after SOD left Deklein. During the AA/TRI (July 2007) Deklein campaign, you were still in STK Scientific. SOD main fights in Fountain were D2, Sparta and Celestial Apocalypse as part of D2's terror campaign. SOD wasn't the one that ultimately fled Fountain, that was one of the many great STK-S failure cascades.

Edited by: HAMTRONIX on 10/12/2008 04:45:56 While I spent SOD's last 3 months in another EC corp with whom we had history with, the HOBOS. I was with SOD since their first days in 0.0 out in q-t. I went from the rank and file to a director and 3rd in command of a GREAT corp. Many of you know me as a carebear, but I did make appearances on the battlefield with my characters from time to time.
To all those we fought, great fights! I could never have sold battleships like I did without you! To all the pilots who came and went from SOD, and the corps and alliances alike, I salute you.
I am one of those who made it to vegas the last few years to meet with my friends. After several years of voice comms, decision making, using family resources to keep jav out of jail (well not really, but I had to take a shot), good times, and bad. I don't ever regret taking up quinn on his offer for me to come onboard with sod way back when. Thanks to all the guys who made it all happen, you know who you are!

Not as amazing as me having one of my alts in TRI at that time actually, if you knew anything you'd know that Helen was left in STK to secure over 9 T2 bpos and lots of STK assets. STK didn't fail in Fountain if we had stayed the utlimately Xelas would of been left with nothing in Fountain but STK was recalled to Feythabolis when AZN fell under attack from BoB. So how about you learn your history.

I consider myself lucky to have joined SOD, close to two years ago, early in my EVE career. SOD although did not make many friends in 0.0 we have/had some of the best PVPers and all around friendly guys to hang out with in the game, hands down. How do I know this? Well we had moved so many times and join so many alliances, flown under so many non-SOD FC's, it feels like we've taken the world tour twice on both apposing sides of the great war and everything in between.
Thanks Jav and others who contributed to the write up on our history, it makes for some great memory flash backs.
Our core group of SODites still fly and fight under a new banner, the start of a new era.
RIP SOD, we loved you!!1

Youre in mark 3 of a constantly failing alliance, so it doesnt really say much about you. Hows the fight for Vale going BTW?
And just cause we ruined your plans in Deklein 3 years ago so you counldt make all your ISKies because we didnt roll over in a day doesnt mean you should be bitter forever.
Its a game of pixels, and if youre bitter about something that happened 3 years ago... get over it.

Its a game of pixels, and if youre bitter about something that happened 3 years ago... get over it.
also... you should have let that alliance the die the first time aournd and spare yourself the misery of watching it over and over again.
o7
Lol i made plenty of isk in Deklein seeing as we owned it for months after you lot failed and sold your stuff in firesales. Our alliance might be constantly in drama but hey it keeps the game fun and we're still kicking where is SoD now? PS. 3 years ago? like you mean 2007 right which was just over one year ago going by my timeline...
don't worry dude its just pixels right so why get worked up! Keep replying it shows how much you care.

Just a gang of four Got each other's back Out for blood like wild dogs in a pack
Tearin' up the world Put ourselves through hell Just to have a story we can tell
You can't stop us cuz' we're
Goin' out, goin' out, goin' out, goin' out swingin' If you got the balls to fight then come on bring it Goin' out, goin' out, goin' out swingin Like a midnight alley fight Come on come on come on come on bring it
Local gutter rats On the streets of gold Crashing stolen cars and sellin' souls
Setting off alarms Watch the system burn Ain't it crazy how the tables turn
You can't stop us cuz' we're
Goin' out, goin' out, goin' out, goin' out swingin' If you got the balls to fight then come on bring it Goin' out, goin' out, goin' out swingin Like a midnight alley fight Come on come on come on come on bring it

Edited by: Avaris on 16/12/2008 23:25:19 Edited by: Avaris on 16/12/2008 23:23:37 SOD has been a great corp imo, the reason I say is cause they have housed all the members of the corp that I formed as a newb in eve and flew with for 3+ years, and all my members have been happy there as I still keep in contact with them. I have never been able to fly for a decent amount of time with all the members of SOD due to varying issues that conflicted. I will say that I have no regrets merging my corp into SOD as they have gotten allot of fun out of their time with the corp. Sad that it has come to this for all involved. I personally have the upmost respect for the members that I know well from SOD and always will. And as for me bloodlet, I am doing a bit of charity work until I can find a new home that i find suitable....GL and fly safe to all those from SOD

Edited by: Swirler on 22/12/2008 05:42:17 Excellent read!
I was a member of SoD for most of it's time ranging from their owning PXF in Fountain, to their final days in Daisho Syndicate in Geminate.
hard fought proof - hehe, never realized my first kill in SoD was on my birthday!
I left for a good few months, after KOS blew it in the South, I stuck around, joining LV, and getting in on some F&%king epic fights. LV ran like *****es in the end, I called them all such, and left.
Rejoining SoD and sticking with them for what I now see was over a year.
The great thing about SoD was their method of doing things as a group, a real corporation. They gave the members a chance for input, a voice, hashing out the opportunities before us, and letting us decide what direction the corporation would take. We all remember those meetings on TS were we reviewed our options and directions. It's what made us a stronger team, remembered with praise and remembered well by all who were a part of SoD. I'm also glad to see the level of respect we got from both ally and enemy alike.
In every life, their comes the fork in the road, and a choice to be made. SoD was good at picking good people, maintaining networks and information, and getting things done. I always felt they were best, and able to be even better, when leading their own alliance, instead of just a single corporation. We as members time and again made the decision not to burden ourselves with running an alliance, that was probably the only mistake made that mattered. It kept a great corp from becoming a great alliance which might still be going today.
I thank SoD for all I learned from them, what to do and not to do. A few disliked my strong opinions, that's ok, I always smile knowing that I was right most of the time.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the eve-community! Shadows of the Dead has ended, but another corp will emerge from it's members, applying what they have learned, making eve a better place for more good people, like most of SoD's membership has been.

It is always sad to see an important part of EvE History come to an end. I was on the other side of the gun from you guys when you were in Elitest Cowards, and I can't say that I always respected/understood your decisions with regards to PL/SOT; however, it was nice to read the history behind where you came from and what you went through to get there. Mad props to being able to withstand the tests of time and close a chapter upon realization of need. GLuck to you and all your pilots.

Hiya D'Ceet!
You can have professional disagreements with an organization, yet still give them the respect they deserve. I would not call SoD Nubs, plenty of people in there that are better pilots than I (DitchDoctor for sure). SoD's accomplishments and good personnel deserve their rightful respect. They have it from me.

So long SOD! Just reactivated my account after 18 months away and found you guys gone. I had a great time with you when I was formally m0riarty & David Brent, (hi to you two and who ever owns you now). Maybe SOD wern't the most WTFBBQPWNDURBASES corp out there in the Eve universe, but they were all a great bunch of peeps and did stuff.
All the best
