Ok, I've been playing around some with the new skill list XML document... there's only one MAJOR problem with that new feature... you can only acces your own XML document, and then only after you sign in... Now where's the logic in that? I can understand they want some security so person A can't access the skillist of person B. But this totally screws up my plans for building an application so people can view their skills list on their mobile phone. as I for one would think this a great application, I would like to ask the devs if there could be some way we could acces those Skill XML documents in a way that would make more sense.

Can't you try to send the username and password of the person? I bet the server set's a cookie. Check out the forums on EVE-I for the character manager and skill monitor.

For exact that same reason, we decided not to make the characterSheet available for only and solely the user. Exactly the same as people commenting out their "shipsetup" on some screenshots involving large battles, might think enabling the charactersheet for everyone, is not the way to go.
An option could be, in the "forumsettings" to (just like your corporation and race) to set your charactersheet "public". Default this would be Off. it's an easy flip ... just let me know what you think of it ... all of you

Edited by: Alexis Machine on 17/07/2004 00:16:57 As long as you maintain the option to turn the "feature" off I say go for it.

Hhmmzz.. if this option would be put in place, my phone skills app would be a definate posibility. All that would be needed would be one extra screen explaining people what they need to do to make it work. Well, you got my vote on putting in that option, mainly because requesting the skill list would still be done via the character ID which is a very BIG number, so hard to guess someones ID off hand anyways.
in case of a "public"character sheet however, I would like to see the actual data which connects the character sheet to the character (mostly the character name) is removed. Since you are the one actually requesting the sheet, you should know who it belongs to before requesting it. This would take out the brute force attaks people could setup to gain a list of character sheet from other people.

No need for guessing. Search character ingame -> Capture portrait -> CharacterID.bmp in your capture\Portraits-folder

It easier that that, just move the mouse over the piccy to the left of each post and you see the character ID for picture generation. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

Hi.
The problem with making the XML sheet public is that it also reveals your alt character names.
I don't mind sharing my skills but some people may find shgring their alts a bit too much

That should be easy to fix, just restrict the XML to the char belonging to the ID provided. Which seems only logical to me, since that's the character you requsted the info of... Lliandra aka. Ractoc Site Admin for EVE-Central |

The ability to see other characters' skills would be really nice, especially for planning events. A problem I see with a lot of the competitive events is it usually comes down to whoever has the most skills wins, and the newer players are a bit screwed as they just cant fly fast enough, or do enough damage, to beat a longtime veteran. Of course, an obvious solution is to create divisions based on what skills you have, but if you cant see what the participants skills are, you cant really regulate the event properly. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base? |
