So I took my first driving test [UK] today.
Was doing perfectly fine all the way through. 45-minutes of virtually flawless driving, everything done exactly as the DSA wanted it to be done, even the grumpy examiner was lightening up.
As I entered the test centre car park to finish my test and do my final maneouvre - reverse bay parking - a dozy cow enters the car park doing an illegal maneouvre [technically should have waited, and since she was doing her test too I hope she failed], right in the corner of my right blind spot, so I continue doing the park and she edges forwards twice [apparently, since I was too busy focusing on getting my car in the right position].
I line up the car perfectly into the bay. Confident of victory I tap my thumbs on the wheel for a few seconds while the examiner totes up the marks . . .
And my jaw hits the floor to learn that "I'm sorry to inform you, but on this occasion you did not pass your driving test . . . yaddayaddayadda." I ask him the reason and he says I should've stopped to let the girl past, despite there being no room at all for her to move around in the car park while I do the maneouvre.
So that's half a years work and ú50 test fee wasted then by some stupid chick who can't drive and a blind examiner?
/RAAAAAAAGEEEE!!!!!
Now I've gotta shell out for another ú100 in lessons and can't take my test til mid January. Thanks, love . . .

100 pounds for MANDATORY lessons? 50 pounds for the test? Fail you for one litte right-of-way error? Jeeze...
Think it was something like $60 CDN to do my test, no classes required. 'course the registries are privately owned, so some fail you just so you have to pay again, some pass you without even going for a drive if you give them a couple extra bucks.

It's great huh!
Took me 3 goes.
Two ****ty examiners the first time just picking at stupid things... 3rd time, I get an awesome dude that realises I CAN drive and that other people ****ed it up for me. I was thinking all the time on my 3rd attempt that I'd failed again thanks to some douche pulling out on me.
Still, I passed in the end, keep at it. Cost me about ú1,200 to get it done overall. Though I did the learning in 5 months, usually about 4 hours of driving a week.
Naturally, I then proceeded to buy a left hand drive car as my first car. :3

Hence the controversy of learning to drive in a RHD Car, on RHD Roads, and then buying a LHD Car as your first car.

Here in the UK, we drive on the right side of the road, i.e. the left.
In other countries, they drive on the wrong side of the road, i.e. the right.
It's easy to remember.
Left is right and right is wrong.

US is right side of the road, left side vehicle (unless your a mailman). The only downside I've ever seen to this is if you have to park in the street which has resulted in lost doors or having to step into traffic to get around your vehicle and onto the sidewalk.
On topic that really sucks for your driving exams though, but from everything I hear about you guys are really, really strict about the license thing and while I like my system I do feel we could tighten it up a bit.
I got my license as soon as I turned 18. After several years of my mother 'screwing up' (read:control) on my drivers ed applications I dropped out of driver ed on my birthday, grabbed my friends 77 mercury station wagon, and passed the test with flying colors even though the cars backup lights failed to work. Of course I lost it a couple years later due to a serious bout of road rage but I've been clean for several years now.
I also know that both sides of the pond of different restrictions. We generally go by weight instead of vehicle type. So with my standard class D I can drive any vehicle up to 24,000 lbs and that incudes trucks with trailers. With the STAR certification I can drive motorcycles (this is still fairly new in the grand scheme of driving). Class C I believe are school buses and motorhomes, Class B are Smaller Diesels and Class A is pretty much anything on the road (although you still need endorsements for multiple trailers, livestock, hazardous, etc)

Say what you want about driving examiners - but they are passing/failing people in a country with damn good road safety standards - so they're doing their bit too.
Not saying anything you did was dodgy - it wasn't by the sound of it.
However, I'm assuming you're a reasonably young male learner driver? I have a strong theory that if there is ANYTHING at all that can be picked out as a fail, DSA are secretly told to fail young learner drivers the first time - thinking back at my test, if I passed first time, I would have been really ****y and immediately gone out thinking I was a brilliant driver, and would probably have had a few serious knocks.
By failing once, I feel that I calmed down and respected driving a bit more than I would otherwise have done.

The rest of it was not perfect, but damn near a pass.

In UK:
A = Motorbikes B = Cars C = Lorries/GoodsVehicles/Trucks (whatever) D = Buses/Coaches
BE is cars and trailers, because if you exceed certain weights/dimensions with a trailer, you have to have the 'E' bit, which nowadays is a further driving test. CE is Goods Vehicles over 7.5T with trailers, ie, the big articulated lorries on our motorways. DE, buses/coaches with trailers.

I believe the reason we drive on the right(car) and on the left (road) is because the majority of people are right handed, so it is easier to draw a sword and swing left to right without hitting an obstacle (doesn't include the person attacking/defending) while riding a horse.

I wish we in the US made it MUCH tougher to get a license.
45 minutes of driving? Mine took less than 5 minutes. My cop even made me pull over so he could throw his trash into the woods then looked over at me with a serious look and said "Remember only throw biodegradable stuff into the woods!". Then he turned up the radio and started singing. Awesome guy but seriously its way too easy to get a license.

I'm telling you, I didn't learn my driving from the DPS but from kart racing.
Really, all I did was do the prep with my dad, walk into the DPS office, take the test (on which I randomly guessed on most of the questions) and walked out with my temporary license; took all of 10 minutes.

I know you have to wair a time before a re-test, but didn't know you had to take more lessons. Sounds like a really rubbish way to fail after the stirling drive. What manouvers did you get? I remember having to do 3-point turn and reverse park...was so close to the kerb, I remember thinking if I try to get it in one, I'm gonna hit it. So I went forward-back once more to get it straight and thankfully it was the right call. I passed 1st time, with 7 minors (2 in speeding ). My sister passed 1st time with only 5 minors and believe it or not, I have actually seen a pass sheet with nothing but the examiner's signature on it.
It does suck a bit about the fail right at the end, but you're obviously up to the standard. Hopefully next time you'll rinse it and it'll be that much sweeter. Good luck! -------------

I seriously wish they would make the test like that in the U.S. Also make people re-take the test every 3 years or so. Would hopefully keep most of the idiots off the road. Would also prevent the "I'm so old that I can't read the speedometer so I'll compensate by driving 15 miles an hour slower than everyone else and I'll save electricy by not using the turn signal" crowd. _______________________________ Pleese exucse any seplling erorr's in tihs psot |

I grew up in the country, so I couldn't parallel park. (poor excuse I know)
I took my test at 16 and I was completely lost when the instructor told me to parallel park. After about 5 minutes of me looking at this stupidly, he says **** it man, head back to the DMV. Strangely, I passed on the first go.
I can parallel park now, its not a problem.
8 years since and no accidents or tickets...yet.

A few things come to mind:
I'm married to a driving instructor, shes damn good too. Shes got a 67% pass rate atm and thats GOOD. We've had students come down from as far as Manchester (to Essex) to have my wife as an instructor to get them past their test. 1 guy (an Iranian student) came back from holiday in Iran especially to do a 5 day Intensive Course.
I trained to be a driving examiner. To get through the initial test I had to do the full driving exam taking all manouvers, not the '3' usually taken in an ordinary test. The driving test lasted in excess of 90 mins which had to be perfect. No minor errors allowed at all. You have to do the theory test of 75 questions and allowed only 1 wrong. In the 'hazard perception' test you are allowed no mistakes at all. Just 1 is an automatic failure.
Today I got someone doing their test drive across me at a junction (they turned right past oncoming traffic). As they turned into the road, the examiner made them park just up from the junction, got out of the car and walked off. How do I know that? The examiner phoned me and told me thats why (yeah I know him, he recognised my car)
Most test centers in the Uk have about a 40% pass rate. Less so in cities. Its one of the hardest jobs you can imagine .. why? Well, I know for a fact that, to get past their tests, students try to: Bribe, threaten, offer sexual favours, get violent, use emotional blackmail and so forth. Ive had friends who have been threatened with the accusation of **** by students unless they passed them. Examiners accused of racism because they failed a student. I know of parents who have waited at test centers to attack examiners who didnt pass their dearest children. One examiner was followed home and his house/car was vandalised and his children attacked by 1 Nigerian who felt his failed test was a personal insult. Being an examiner is a very stressful job and the financial reward isnt that high (base rate is 21K) and they have to do ALOT of overtime. I only wanted to be an examiner because after 1 year as a regular examiner you can cross train to be a motorcycle examiner. As a rabid, hairy, leather wearing, back patch toting biker I cant think of a better job to do. Unfortunately, I failed my final exam (after a 4 week intensive course). Do I have an excuse about failing? Nope, I did it wrong full stop. Would I do it again? Damn right I would. Anyone else out there who is over 21, has a clean driving license held for 3 years or more can apply. They usually advertise on the DVLA website in January or June. See you at the test center maybe

I passed 1st time, 7 minors. I did screw something up and thought I would probably be told I failed, but I kept my cool and at the end it turned out the examiner had not noticed. Woot. Props to my crazy Jamaican driving instructor. After the stress of his lessons, I could have driven that car into Osama bin Laden's secret cave complex and back without losing a drop of sweat.

The MONSTER:
Say what you like about the ugliness of the Fiat Multipla (although the newer ones are less ugly, as they don't have 'the bump' on the front), but it's a very nice car. It's really tall - good for people my height, good for ferrying old people around in as they don't have to get up/down - they just slide sideways onto the seats :-) It's got 6 seats, 3 front, 3 back. The back three seats come uot completely, leaving the back half of the vehicle looking like the back half of a transit van - a big empty box, which is very practical.
It's an awesome car. Looks so much better on the inside than on the outside. :-)

ahh i failed first time with a healthy 3 majors and a tonne of minors -
best major was an attempt to overtake a cyclist up a hill and round a corner - was in way too high a gear that i ended up slowing to a stop on the other side of the road next to the cyclist - slammed it into first and jerked the car forward causing my examiners papers to all go flying with a loud grunt from him. - still thought i might of passed as well.
good luck with your next test - people who fail the first time are statistically better anyway (ive decided)

That's seriously unlucky...
I passed first time, god knows how - I managed to stall in the middle of a cross roads blocking everything and didnt secure the car correctly. Then ****ed upon a dual carriage way, when a car pulled over and I had to force my way into the other lane, but i didnt try n get over till i was at a stop behind the now parked car.
But, luckily, chatting with the examiner it turned out his kid was just starting the college I'd left that year, so I started to use my 'gift of the gab' during the test and had a laugh with him about it - it's sooo the only reason he passed me.

You may have had right of way in that situation, but you have to realise that right of way means very little in a driving test. Or any situation really. The examiner is looking to see if you're safe to drive, and sticking rigidly to the rules does not make you a safe driver. If someone is faffing around on the road, you damn well let them sort themselves out and give them a wide berth.

I ask him the reason and he says I should've stopped to let the girl past, despite there being no room at all for her to move around in the car park while I do the maneouvre.
So that's half a years work and ú50 test fee wasted then by some stupid chick who can't drive and a blind examiner?
/RAAAAAAAGEEEE!!!!!
Now I've gotta shell out for another ú100 in lessons and can't take my test til mid January. Thanks, love . . .
literally exactly the same reason i failed my first test!!!!!!! except it was a guy who pulled on car park, not a girl.

So I took my first driving test [UK] today.
Was doing perfectly fine all the way through. 45-minutes of virtually flawless driving, everything done exactly as the DSA wanted it to be done, even the grumpy examiner was lightening up.
As I entered the test centre car park to finish my test and do my final maneouvre - reverse bay parking - a dozy cow enters the car park doing an illegal maneouvre [technically should have waited, and since she was doing her test too I hope she failed], right in the corner of my right blind spot, so I continue doing the park and she edges forwards twice [apparently, since I was too busy focusing on getting my car in the right position].

man, its rough in the UK, when i got my liscense when i was 16 (America FTW ) here in nevada the prices were, iirc (its been 6 years)
Driving Permit: $10 Drive Test: like $15 or $20 i believe
the good part was, you only had to pay the fee if you PASSED, if you didnt pass, didnt have to pay
also, here in nevada (and the entire US i believe) you take your drive test in your own car (or your parents car, whatever) we never had "test cars"
if you fail the drive test, you just keep your permit until you have to take it again
i failed my first drive test by making an illegal left hand turn (i did everything else right, but the DMV was near an area under heavy construction, like no lines to seperate lanes)
anyway, i made a left hand turn in from the fast lane
took the test again a few weeks later, came to the DMV and took a standby
made the exact same f'ing mistake, left hand turn from the fast lane
HOWEVER, this drive test instructor was pretty cool, we came back to the DMV and i took the parrallel parking, got within like 6 inches
after we went in, my mom asked how bad i messed up, and the instructor said i did good, except i made the illegal left hand turn, but apparently that instructor "likes to look at the whole exam", and since i did pretty much perfect on everything else, he let me pass
have only had one ticket and one accident since then (accident WAS my fault, but it was just a a small crack in the other driver's bumper on his already junky car, if anything, i made the back look the same as the front and evened it out a little. . . . .
the ticket was a red light ticket because i pushed a yellow light and it turned red while i was in the intersection
those damn sneaky motorcycle cops. . .

Am in the process of obtaining my driving license as well. It took me 3 tries to get my theory certificate, because of performance anxiety. Took pills to counter this the third time which seemed to help a bit.
Now I have failed two tries at the actual driving exam. The first time because I was driving past a school and kids on their bikes were making a sport out of it to exit the schoolyard and slip in front of the car in one smooth go. Trying my best not to drive over them I noticed too late I was about to drive into a street I was not allowed to enter. So yeah, my own fault I guess. Second time was entering the highway and the cars in front of me were going very slowly. Nobody on the highway seemed to care to leave a little room for me either. Not wanting to squeeze myself between them at low speed I had to wait till the last moment to do this. So at the end I get told that appearantly I should have slowed down, create distance between the cars in front of me, and then pull up so I could enter the highway at full speed. Would have been nice if they had told me about this during driving lessons >_>
My problem with the driving exam isn't so much performance anxiety but the fact these situations never pop up during the lessons and improvising was never my forte. My current teacher however keeps complaining about small details which means I have stopped listening to him and stubbornly do things my way, which ain't helping either. Asked for a new teacher this time around for my own sanity and his and I hope it will help. I understand why it is important to correct the mistakes that others make but it does indeed seem like they need to earn enough money off you before they let you pass

Yeah thats great, but that leaves the rest of us vomiting out of the window.
Good god, man. To be honest... I expected a Honda Accord or something.
Practicality indeed, nothing warrants spending MONEY on one of those things. It just further perpetuates my hatred of FIAT. There are so many other MPVs that would fit the bill without looking like a heel-stepped toad.
DAMN YOU.

I made a similar mistake on my test but I got away with it.
I was reverse parrallel parking when a car came flying around the corner. There was nowhere to go as there were cars on both sides of the road.
I executed the maneuver really quick because the car bumper coming towards me was nearly touching the floor and his face was almost stuck to the window trying to stop.
The examiner suggested I should've stopped. I pointed out that there was nowhere for the guy to go and he would've hit us. So I got away with it. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

Here in the US theres no driving classes required (though there probably should be). Instead the classes are optional but you get a discount on your insurance (which can be ridiculously expensive for a new driver) for taking it.
I took mine in September of 2000 on the same day as my sister. I'll never forget, she was ****ed because I passed flawlessly while she failed horribly. It was priceless. She ran over the parking cones trying to pull her car into a parking space (the very first thing they have you do).

Originally by: KingsGambit I know you have to wair a time before a re-test, but didn't know you had to take more lessons.
Good luck!
I got two left-reverses [guy I had was a nutter!], emergency stop [great fun!] and that reverse park at the end.
I don't have to book extra lessons, but the closest I can get a re-test is in mid January due to the Xmas break, and since I'm not insured on any of our family cars I need at least a bit of practice between now and then, or I will get rusty [perhaps it didn't help that I had flu for a fortnight before my test and had to rush in a lot of lessons in the four days up to it].

I believe the Fiat Multipla has won many "Ugliest Car Ever" awards.
Just have to chime in on this... because... Whenever I see a Fiat Multipla I have to think of a fat womans foot in a shoe thats a number or two too small.
You know what I mean? When the fat gets compressed and kind of "pours out" on top of the shoe? You did see that quite a bit in "Married with children".
And that's exactly how the original Fiat Multipla looks like.
But let's not kid ourselves. Cars all pretty much look the same within a decade (only the comparatively expensive ones look like ass individually). I mean there are models from different makers and rivalling companies that even have the same window line. And im not talking about "similar" im talking completely the same.
That being said, the multipla at least tries to look different. ish.
They stopped making pretty cars in the seventies, anyway.

Originally by: Grimpak amazingly, many people say that the ugliness of the car is the only drawback of it. it has nice space, it's comfortable, and on the mechanic side, it behaves nicely.
This. This and totally completely this. The ouside is the only drawback. Apart from typical Fix-It-Again-Tomorrow (F.I.A.T) problems, hehe.
That said, I've only spent out on getting rear brakes fixed and a new exhaust. Apart from that, it's not needed any work afaik.
