Was doing perfectly fine all the way through. 45-minutes of virtually flawless driving, everything done exactly as the DSA wanted it to be done, even the grumpy examiner was lightening up. As I entered the test centre car park to finish my test and do my final maneouvre - reverse bay parking - a dozy cow enters the car park doing an illegal maneouvre [technically should have waited, and since she was doing her test too I hope she failed], right in the corner of my right blind spot, so I continue doing the park and she edges forwards twice [apparently, since I was too busy focusing on getting my car in the right position]. I line up the car perfectly into the bay. Confident of victory I tap my thumbs on the wheel for a few seconds while the examiner totes up the marks . . . And my jaw hits the floor to learn that "I'm sorry to inform you, but on this occasion you did not pass your driving test . . . yaddayaddayadda." I ask him the reason and he says I should've stopped to let the girl past, despite there being no room at all for her to move around in the car park while I do the maneouvre. So that's half a years work and ú50 test fee wasted then by some stupid chick who can't drive and a blind examiner? /RAAAAAAAGEEEE!!!!! Now I've gotta shell out for another ú100 in lessons and can't take my test til mid January. Thanks, love . . .
Brea Lafail	Posted - 2008.12.11 15:08:00 - [2] 100 pounds for MANDATORY lessons? 50 pounds for the test? Fail you for one litte right-of-way error? Jeeze... Think it was something like $60 CDN to do my test, no classes required. 'course the registries are privately owned, so some fail you just so you have to pay again, some pass you without even going for a drive if you give them a couple extra bucks.

Two **ty examiners the first time just picking at stupid things... 3rd time, I get an awesome dude that realises I CAN drive and that other people **ed it up for me. I was thinking all the time on my 3rd attempt that I'd failed again thanks to some douche pulling out on me. Still, I passed in the end, keep at it. Cost me about ú1,200 to get it done overall. Though I did the learning in 5 months, usually about 4 hours of driving a week. Naturally, I then proceeded to buy a left hand drive car as my first car. :3

The only downside I've ever seen to this is if you have to park in the street which has resulted in lost doors or having to step into traffic to get around your vehicle and onto the sidewalk. On topic that really sucks for your driving exams though, but from everything I hear about you guys are really, really strict about the license thing and while I like my system I do feel we could tighten it up a bit. I got my license as soon as I turned 18. After several years of my mother 'screwing up' (read:control) on my drivers ed applications I dropped out of driver ed on my birthday, grabbed my friends 77 mercury station wagon, and passed the test with flying colors even though the cars backup lights failed to work. Of course I lost it a couple years later due to a serious bout of road rage but I've been clean for several years now. I also know that both sides of the pond of different restrictions. We generally go by weight instead of vehicle type. So with my standard class D I can drive any vehicle up to 24,000 lbs and that incudes trucks with trailers. With the STAR certification I can drive motorcycles (this is still fairly new in the grand scheme of driving). Class C I believe are school buses and motorhomes, Class B are Smaller Diesels and Class A is pretty much anything on the road (although you still need endorsements for multiple trailers, livestock, hazardous, etc)

Not saying anything you did was dodgy - it wasn't by the sound of it. However, I'm assuming you're a reasonably young male learner driver? I have a strong theory that if there is ANYTHING at all that can be picked out as a fail, DSA are secretly told to fail young learner drivers the first time - thinking back at my test, if I passed first time, I would have been really **y and immediately gone out thinking I was a brilliant driver, and would probably have had a few serious knocks. I believe the reason we drive on the right(car) and on the left (road) is because the majority of people are right handed, so it is easier to draw a sword and swing left to right without hitting an obstacle (doesn't include the person attacking/defending) while riding a horse. Also it's not just one Island

My cop even made me pull over so he could throw his trash into the woods then looked over at me with a serious look and said "Remember only throw biodegradable stuff into the woods!". Then he turned up the radio and started singing. Awesome guy but seriously its way too easy to get a license.

Really, all I did was do the prep with my dad, walk into the DPS office, take the test (on which I randomly guessed on most of the questions) and walked out with my temporary license; took all of 10 minutes.

Sounds like a really rubbish way to fail after the stirling drive. What manouvers did you get? I remember having to do 3-point turn and reverse park...was so close to the kerb, I remember thinking if I try to get it in one, I'm gonna hit it. So I went forward-back once more to get it straight and thankfully it was the right call. I passed 1st time, with 7 minors (2 in speeding ). My sister passed 1st time with only 5 minors and believe it or not, I have actually seen a pass sheet with nothing but the examiner's signature on it. It does suck a bit about the fail right at the end, but you're obviously up to the standard. Hopefully next time you'll rinse it and it'll be that much sweeter. Good luck! -------------

(poor excuse I know) I took my test at 16 and I was completely lost when the instructor told me to parallel park. After about 5 minutes of me looking at this stupidly, he says **** it man, head back to the DMV. Strangely, I passed on the first go. I can parallel park now, its not a problem. 8 years since and no accidents or tickets...yet. /me knocks on wood.

We've had students come down from as far as Manchester (to Essex) to have my wife as an instructor to get them past their test. 1 guy (an Iranian student) came back from holiday in Iran especially to do a 5 day Intensive Course. I trained to be a driving examiner. To get through the initial test I had to do the full driving exam taking all manouvers, not the '3' usually taken in an ordinary test. The driving test lasted in excess of 90 mins which had to be perfect. No minor errors allowed at all. You have to do the theory test of 75 questions and allowed only 1 wrong. In the 'hazard perception' test you are allowed no mistakes at all. Just 1 is an automatic failure. Today I got someone doing their test drive across me at a junction (they turned right past oncoming traffic). As they turned into the road, the examiner made them park just up from the junction, got out of the car and walked off. How do I know that? The examiner phoned me and told me thats why (yeah I know him, he recognised my car) Most test centers in the Uk have about a 40% pass rate. Less so in cities. Its one of the hardest jobs you can imagine .. why? Well, I know for a fact that, to get past their tests, students try to: Bribe, threaten, offer sexual favours, get violent, use emotional blackmail and so forth. Ive had friends who have been threatened with the accusation of **** by students unless they passed them. Examiners accused of racism because they failed a student. I know of parents who have waited at test centers to attack examiners who didnt pass their dearest children. One examiner was followed home and his house/car was vandalised and his children attacked by 1 Nigerian who felt his failed test was a personal insult. Being an examiner is a very stressful job and the financial reward isnt that high (base rate is 21K) and they have to do ALOT of overtime. I only wanted to be an examiner because after 1 year as a regular examiner you can cross train to be a motorcycle examiner. As a rabid, hairy, leather wearing, back patch toting biker I cant think of a better job to do. Unfortunately, I failed my final exam (after a 4 week intensive course). Do I have an excuse about failing? Nope, I did it wrong full stop. Would I do it again? Damn right I would. Anyone else out there who is over 21, has a clean driving license held for 3 years or more can apply. They usually advertise on the DVLA website in January or June. See you at the test center maybe

I did screw something up and thought I would probably be told I failed, but I kept my cool and at the end it turned out the examiner had not noticed. Woot. Props to my crazy Jamaican driving instructor. After the stress of his lessons, I could have driven that car into Osama bin Laden's secret cave complex and back without losing a drop of sweat.
