I was mining with some friends, and I had a belli cruiser with 3 lasers and 2 missile turrets. We had some pirates come to us in a 0.6 sector and my friends industrial ship was above me. I fired a missle at the pirate which hit the industrial ship and then the police came in, jammed me and killed my cruiser...
This is a bug that needs to be fixed, perhaps when you are attacked you should have a pop up box with "would you like police protection?" as the popup.
Please post any similar incidents any of you guys have had. Thanks ! ---------------------------------------

Create a distress beacon. That is what this game needs. Once activated, players would be able to respond, and if there's AI police in the system, they will respond too.
The only thing that has to be figured out is how to prevent abuse from ppl just clicking it all the time...

A distress beacon! What a great idea! With a 'warp to' option associated with it. Obviously you would have to be able to choose to ignore it to avoid spamming.

Phoenix: fill in a bug report form (you can use them to send ideas to the devs) and mention this idea - I think it has possibilities. Like getting fined for wasting police time - or being lured into a trap by the unscrupulous.

So what stops a fleet of player pirate cruisers sitting out in .4 space and triggering the beacon to lure in people and shooting them up. ?
It's far too open to abuse as a general use item.

I would guess that you would be able to "show info" on the person making the distress call, you could then see if it was a pirate or somone with a low sec status and could choose not to help them........ |

This is an excellent idea. Reporting the attack should be at the discretion of the attacked party, much like a victim 'pressing charges'.
As an added feature, the time before the police respond could be directly linked to the security level of the zone. An example of a sliding scale might be:
1.0: police respond immediately and instantly. 0.9-0.8: police respond in 10-20 seconds. 0.7-0.6: police respond in 30-60 seconds. 0.5-0.3: police may respond (50%) in 60-120 seconds. 0.2-0.1: police may respond (25%) in 120-300 seconds. 0.0: police never respond.
What's more, you should be able to 'tune' the distress beacons. You could set who could hear the beacon to everyone, only your corporation, only your gang, or a list of people who can hear the beacon. The Monkeysphere |

Nothing stops them so what? setting traps is part of piracy. If you are responding to a distress signal in reality, you never really know what you're up against when you arrive. Could be a trap, could be someone in need... could be both? In my oppinion, the traps only add to the game. Not to abuse. Pirates can still yell at local chat saying "I need help at location XYZ"
no big difference...

since edit won't work, I'll have to add my new point here
pirates want precious cargo, right? I would NOT respond to a distress signal in an Indy to start with... nor in any other freigher-type ship, or with a load of very precious cargo. It's still your call seek battle or not.

U all have a point here the basic thing is that the Police shouldn't just warp in guns blazing. Thats just stupid police work. It would be enough for me to have the police warp in and if no fire is excanged while present (lets say in a 200km radius) they dont shoot. -------------- When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this - you haven't. ------------------ (Thomas Edison) |

What kind of missile was it? I thought you needed targeted or FoF missiles to avoid hitting "friends" by mistake...

Well, this did not happen to me, but I was witness to some serious police misbehaviour.
I was mining in my probe, minding my own business, there were about 6 containers from pirates I killed while mining floating about. Suddenly, a Lone Stabber warps into the belt. Although I was in a .6 system, I checked the guy out, 6.4 sec rating. I figure I have nothing to fear from him. he goes about cleaning up the pirate loot, which I didnt care about, I had 10k units of kernite sitting next to me. I call on my associate to come in and watch over it while I go get my indy. My buddy shows up in his stabber and guards over my ore. I warp out, get my indy and get back in time to see 5 CONCORD police ships orbiting what was left of the cruiser of the person I didnt know. He was floating in his pod waiting by his container of goods. I asked my friend what happened and he said that he didnt know. CONCORD just all of a sudden jumped in and blew the guy up. The person who got destroyed politley asked me for help and if I would carry his stuff to a station.
This kind of lawlessness on behalf of the police must end!
