So, I undocked in low sec and got attacked, and I proceeded to fire back. I have a 2.0 sec status, the aggressor had -8.0. I figured, hey, this guy is wanted by the law, he is fair game. So, I get an aggression timer, for self defense? A couple buddies of his show up and proceed to warp scramble me and pound my ship to pieces. I try and re-dock and... it says I can't "due to initiating aggression". What? WTF I'm getting ganked by pirates and a civilian CALDARI corporation (which I have high standing with) won't let me dock? I just learned about the aggression timer... and the lesson cost me a rather nicely fitted Nighhawk and maxed out implants. OOPS! I guess it happens. I'm not bitter about having gotten pwned up rather nicely. But, bear with me, the only thing I've been doing in Eve (for the most part) is "care bearing it up" or "mission running". What I'd like is for CCP to cut me some slack an add the simple "idiot proof solution" described below:
What sucks A LOT is I did not get ANY notification such as "you're going to get a really crappy aggression timer, which will prevent you from docking, if you choose to attack this guy WHETHER YOU DO IT IN SELF DEFENSE OR NOT DOES NOT MATTER". Seriously, where is the bloody "are you sure" and the "are you really sure" notification?
I should have just bought those bandit tags off the market instead of dealing with a game mechanic that has not been completely refined to perfection yet. I know I might get flamed for this statement, but I just pointed out an obvious oversight that should have been included. Please, don't let other PvP noobs learn the hard way, add A YES/NO CONFIRMATION LETTING ME KNOW THERE WILL BE A BLOODY AGGRESSION TIMER PREVENTING ME FROM DOCKING IF I ATTACK THIS GUY!!!! Done. Posted there. I believe it is necessary to post this as the implementation of this simple feature would potentially prevent unnecessary frustration to players who are new or who have not had a chance to experience the dynamic nature of PvP in Eve Online, and are thus unaware of certain game mechanics. It will assist with the learning curve. Where is the bad thing in that?

No, we really don't need it. Actually, a good number of the existing ones could stand to go away. If anything, we need a more comprehensive/compact/integrated "help" system. Or a "game manual", if you wish.

I've been playing off and on for a long time, but with MANY MANY months in between. Back in 2003 I don't remember this feature being mentioned AT ALL by anyone. I didn't know because I didn't really PvP or anything of that sort. I really thought that you wouldn't get any "kill rights" or "aggression timer" if the player has low sec, OR if you're simply defending yourself (as in, you did not fire the first shot). :)

So how about a confirmation prompt whenever you open a contract saying "are you sure you want to do this, it might be a scam" ? Oh, hey, how about a confirmation prompt when you buy something from the market saying "warning, you lose ISK if you do that". Also one for activating mission acceleration gates saying "there might be dangerous NPCs beyond this point" ? Or a "your cargo is too expensive for your puny little ship, you could be ganked" ? Maybe a "do you really want to undock ? you could get shot at" too ?
You have to draw the line somewhere, and personally I believe it's already drawn too far into cantbebotheredtoreadcarebearland, no need to move it even further.
P.S. Do we really want to have EVE just as idiot-mistake-proof as the USA ? I think not. See warning label on hammer : "warning do not hit head with it might cause damage".

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 18/12/2008 04:36:10 I looked over a couple of the big killboards hoping to see what killed Strel's Nighthawk but unfortunately the mail wasn't listed... just a Drake death from like two years ago and a couple of Badger II's. If the account is purchased, it wasn't from an active PvPer. If it wasn't purchased then the OP's claim of not knowing the PvP mechanics seems backed up by the lack of killboard entries.
Still curious as to what managed to tank sentries and a Nighthawk long enough to kill something with a Nighthawk tank.

There is such a confirmation window. If you try to shoot an illegal (non-flashy, non-WT) target in highsec or lowsec, you get a popup box asking you if you want to continue with the illegal action when, say, you start firing on something.

Well..
Everyone learns about the docking timer eventually. Most don't freak out over it
The fact that you didn't know about it implies you haven't PvPed much.
This you were learning PvP in a tech II fit Nighthawk. For that you deserve to die.

You won't be opening fire so quickly next time will you?
You'll think it through a little further than the first salvo, won't you?
Has the lack of aggression timer warning served its purpose? Yes :)
For what it's worth, I learned about the aggression timer by shooting back at a can flipper - warped back to station, got my Merlin out, warped back to belt and shot the guy. It was close, but he had me down to 30% shields before I got his rifter into hull - so I ran back to station. Only the station wouldn't let me dock! So off we went on a merry chase around the stargates. I ended up running away on afterburner, and aggression wore off just as he tried warping to me.
It was fun! I learned about can flippers, aggression timer, and making sure to fit a warp scrambler if I'm ever the aggressor :)
The next guy in a rifter that flipped my can, I chased down with my Drake. That wasn't quite sporting of me was it :\

I always questioned the 'dark' part. Has anyone looked at the background while in space? Or the lighting in the stations? Everything is damned bright, not dark.

2 things:
1) you attacked someone in low sec and didn't think his friends would help him, you didn't check local and you didn't think about what you're doing. Your own fault.
2) you fly a Nighthawk and just learned about agression timers? Your fault for not putting in effort.
Clear case of OP not bothering to learn the game before doing something, now you found out the hard way. I do hope that the cost of your NH was worth the lesson and that you might learn from it.

So you thought that whenever a player wanted they could just hit dock and instantly be safe? Who would play such a lame game? Why would someone think that such a thing as launching a massive attack and then happily docking would be possible?
I'd like to know why any station would let a ship furiously launching missiles nonstop in various directions dock at their station.
If you don't think that attacking is aggression then oh I dunno I suggest you get a dictionary and possible learn the english language.

Edited by: Rimac on 18/12/2008 14:36:03 There is a solution for the OP's problem. Since Microsoft 'retired' Clippy, I'm sure CCP can hire him:
http://rapidsignal.com/blog/wp-content/clippy.jpg
Once implemented the OP can enable 'Clippy' mode. Clippy may also be accessed using the 'Ctrl-C' shortcut. A short demo of the new 'Clippy' mode:
"Hi, I'm Clippy, your friendly office... erm... EVE assistant. How may I help you?".
"It appears you are trying to shoot at another ship. Are you sure you wish to continue?"
"Did this ship fire on you first?"
"You have indicated you wish to defend yourself from hostilities by another player. Continue at your own risk, CCP is not liable for damages if you choose to return fire. Note that this action will result in an agression timer of 15 minutes against your character. During this period you cannot dock or use a stargate. This action may also result in loss of ship, cargo, pod, implants, skill points. FDA health hazard warning: This action may result in high blood-pressure, abundant use of expletives and emission of water from your optical sensors. Are you still certain you wish to continue?"
"Congratulations, you have succesfully attempted to fire on another ship! Unfortunately due to the length of this verification process your ship has already been destroyed. Oops. The message you are currently looking at has also prevented you from warping out in your pod and it has also destroyed. I am so sorry about your Snake implants. Have a nice day!"

Personally i just got to play on a different {C , new install , and just noticed the (new?) popup screens that come up when you open anything...took me a few minutes to notice they can be disabled all-together from the main menu but still....for me games that start with 100001 persistant popups and instructions on how to friggin read or use the mouse shout "UNINSTALL!!! NAY!! SHIFT-DELETE!!"
Thanks god it`s easy to disable them all in eve...that way one can play the game and learn things the proper way :)
Oh and whoever made the EvE tutorial needs to be poded...poded...poded...poded...poded.........
I know soo many people that gave EvE a shot and quit during the terible tutorial that has you (mining and missioning? or so I hear...is that right?)
No wonder EvE suffers from this accursed NPC corpe`d caldari plague
