The boycot is suggested due to the new policies that YouTube has implemented - such as algorithmic demotion of videos that contain profanities. These policies will no doubt remove our freedom speech on YouTube because the policies are so vague that they could be used to demote any video that YouTube personally doesn't like.
what do you think about this? whoever you are and whatever your oppinion you have and regardless of your use of language and profanities, all oppinions are welcomed (in contrast to youtubes new policies).
discuss.

I'll be waiting for the first vid that completely thrashes them without a single profanity used to be up on top of that list.

"Demotion" ? What's wrong with that ? I could understand the outrage if you meant "deletion", but...

because imo when you've said demotion (which in this case is nothing but blatant censorship in sheeps clothing) and everyone is ok with that, then it becomes increasingly easy to say deletion next. drip drip drop / stepping stone model.

It's not like Youtube isn't a crap pile of ******ed videos already. When you start to put out crap, expect people to plug their noses.
In the end, this "free speech" bull isn't going to work. The people who upload the latest episode of South Park while watching some ****** getting hit in the nuts with a motorcycle can complain all they want, but Youtube is a private company that can do whatever it wants with itself, and if it says it wants to filter what gets uploaded or how video ranking works there's not a goddamn thing anyone can do about it. If people want a video they ripped to be uploaded without limits they can host it themselves.

Ah, yes, the "slippery slope" argument... I don't buy it.
They already can take down videos whenever they want to, they're not legally bound to keep your video up, but they don't do that, so there goes the "ohnoes censorship" argument. It's a free service, take it or leave it. Freedom of speech or freedom of anything doesn't apply. Sure, a decent counter-retort would be to point out that they don't want to appear "evil" yet still are, in disguise... but that's pretty much tinfoilhat land already.
They also already have a "confirm birthdate" option for restricted material viewing, I can't see anybody still protesting that. There's not a big difference between that and the upcoming demote-rank-for-profanity feature. Oh, and they do take down videos entirely because of copyright infringement issues, wether they like to or not... even if it's just a baseless accusation of it, they just have to. Now, isn't that a harsher censorship method ? I don't see a boycott about it though.
It seems to me that this is mostly about a bunch of vocal (and vulgar) morons who wish to keep their high-exposure status and are afraid (rightly so) they will soon lose it. Yeah, sure, you might be in the "top discussion" rankings or whatever (I didn't even know such a ranking existed, never cared, never will, didn't even check to see if it exists) but that's almost certainly because your video WAS A TROLL to begin with. At least now you'd have to make an effort to have a non-vulgar troll. Oh my, what a predicament.
Does youtube kill your video ? Nope. Do they block the vid from external links ? No. Then STHU about it and get your rankings from somewhere else if you care so much about them, or play within the rules.
Bottom line, the boycott will be an abysmal failure because it will have no noticeable effect, and all of this is just a huge case of barking up the wrong tree.

sir, what has uploaded videos with copyright infringements to do with algorithmically demoting videos based on profanity or offensive nature?
i'll have to respectfully disagree with your willingness to give corporations carte blanche to do whatever they want, censorship is a very serious thing.

Seeing as Youtube is a private company and therefore not obligated in any way to host any content which it finds offensive.
Youtube does not take your freedom of speech away with this policy. Users are free to speak all the profanity they wish, however Youtube does not have to pay for the bandwidth to distribute said profanity.

Reducing the free advertisment level granted by rankings on vulgar material can't possibly fit even the most twisted definition of censorship.

Exactly.
You have the right to free speech, but you do not have the right to be heard.

No, you didn't miss anything. Last time I checked Google was not a government agency, subsidiary nor contractor So, technically, YouTube, owned by Google, is a privately owned company.

Instead of whining about what the people running youtube are doing, why not just setup another website to post movies on where this demotion isnt around?
Personally, I know what I am looking for on youtube and if it starts going poof in the night I will just start looking for it less and less.

Pff. Who cares. As long as it still there when I search for it, everythings cool.
We've learnt by now that Internet Censorship doesn't work. So I don't think we really have to worry about it, someone will release a Firefox Plugin that lets you browse without THE MAN making everything pink and fluffy for the under 18s that shouldn't be using the internets anyway.

Pretty much.
If anyone ever read youtube comments, they'll soon realize that youtube actually gives the biggest leverage for the anti-freedom of speech mentality.

Well, not aspies (although most of them have probably diagnosed themselves with it for the geek-cred), whenever I feel like laughing at people, I browse this forum

I'm for free speech and all, but youtube isnt A FRIGGIN GOVERNMENT ITS A FRIGGIN PRIVATELY OWNED SERVER.
They can transport whatever twisted messages they friggin want to.
Other than that, youtube is a steaming pile of **** (or was it puke`?) you quickly abuse to transport unimportant videos.
I dont get all the fuss? Freedom of speech my ass, what has that got to do with anything around a privately owned server...

Well done for your continued selective reading ability.
As Akita pointed out, this is a private company, not a public funded service. They can do whatever they want with the videos uploaded to that site. If they feel that a video is wrong, illegal, well whatever, its THEIR right to take it down or do whatever they want with it.
Want a site that can show anything or talk about anything without censorship? Go off and build one. Otherwise stop complaining.
