you'll have to train level 5's sooner or later or you will get left behind.
t2 guns pretty much essential so small and medium energy turrets 5 and spec skills. T2 guns lets you have scorch which is an essential in PvP And all the gunnery support skills.
then get the amour compensation skills up and the usual tanking ones and of course the capacitor skills and basic navigation skills.
for pvp, just get propulsion jamming to 4 for all warp disruptors and webbers

Best thing to do is to get into the ship, fly it. Notice what you are most crap at, and plan accordingly. this is less expensive then the first battleship lesson which mostly consists of a discovery of how crap one is at flying the ship followed by a short period of between 5-10 minutes where one completely overestimates their skill at flying said battleship and proceeds to be destroyed by a hail of npc fire.

Which 10 human organs are most important?
If you think corp is different than a guild or clan you have some insecurity issues.

QFT...decided to try an Abaddon after flying a CNR for ages. Realized I didn't have any armor resist skills about the time my armor was hitting 10% lol Luckily a corpie in a kronos came in and tanked for me. Lesson learned almost the hard way.

What are you talking about? Recommended? If you mean the Prerequisites then you're still wrong. The prereqs are only a small subset of the skills needed to fly a ship properly in PvP.

Read the next line I wrote. Certificate Planner. I meant he should trained the skills Recommended there, as that would give him a nice little list to begin with, BESIDES the pre-reqs...

Certificates are a great tool for skill planning. You'll want to train to Basic at least, if not Standard; - Core Competency - Armor tanking - Medium Energy Certs
Also try and get all your Core skills to Standard. Put the effort into training up your Certs other wise you'll end up doing what a lot of new pilots do, take their shiny new ship out for a spin and promptly get it blown up. Don't be that guy. =)

I don't get the core certificates. It wants me to level my shield/armor/struture tanking skills evenly. Which seems dumb. --

this. every skill will come in handy every once in a while, so just train what you need the most. for a harbinger it might be cap and fitting skills, i would say.

Basically pick a the ship (done that) and the fittings on that ship and go by the skills required by those modules to figure out your list of skills to train :) . |

Load out your ideal ship in EFT on your character - alter your skills to get to the DPS you want, make sure everything fits, etc. Input all of those into EveMon and you'll have your training plan.
Don't use certificates - unless you don't mind spending weeks gaining 200EHP by practicing shield skills on an armor tanker and more targeting than your ship can even handle anyway...

The key thing to remember is it's more important than you realise to get your support skills up and not just the spaceship command and gunnery skills for the ship of choice.
If you want an armour tank you want to get those relevant mechanic skills up pretty quick... Mechanic, Hull upgrades V and the armor compensation skills to IV. Also, cap is one of the most critical elements of your survivability so learn anything that boosts cap, cap regen or lowers the module use of cap. I won't list them... besides its probably a good idea to have a good read of al the skills descriptions if you are not that familiar. I spent months without realising I could improve my cap regen rate (or something like that)!

What is the benefit to training armor compensation skills when you are going to be using an active tank?
Per skill description: "To active armor hardeners: 3% bonus per skill level to Armor XXXX resistance when the modules are not active; To passive armor hardeners: 5% bonus per skill level to Armor XXXX resistance."
I'm assuming the point behind training armor compensation skills is so your EANM II won't suck, is that right?
