I prefer tachs to pulses myself, just love them high damage wreckings. And I use a large booster, can pretty much premarun with that.
Tho I really should fit a ab....thing is as fast as frozen snail
Hehe, with Tachs I would not bother to fit propulsion modules ^^
Some missions require lengthy travel times to gates, I always keep one fitted anyway.

Edited by: Vikarion on 28/12/2008 00:17:05 Huh. Well, I can see the point if you start out at range. But, at least where I mission, around 75% - 90% of the missions put me within 45 KM of the enemy, if not closer.
If you are at extreme range, sure, then Tachyons are better.
So much for assumptions based on my own experiences, eh? *kicks self*

With the huge powergrid the Nightmare has, the innate bonus to tracking, I'm not sure what more CCP could've done to hint that it was born to have tachys fitted to it. I'd say MP was more suited to a Paladin, but hey-ho.

Tachs with multifreq. out-dps and out-alpha megapulse with scorch at the same approximate range (55km). The only situation where megapulse are better than tachs is at multifreq. range (under 25km). Which is not to say "never". I use both setups as there are at least 4 missions where you start out and stay within this range. If you have to choose only one setup, though, go with the Tachyon one; it will be better 95% of the time.

I've flown it in pvp with what most people probably would call a lolfit, since it wasn't very pimped out. Still it performed nicely, and I would probably still have been alive if I had pimped it out a'la vanilla nightmare. In many other situations I wouldn't.
use it in pvp it's great fun but choose your battles wisely and prepare to lose one once in a while. And no, I'm not rich (hence my setup ).

Enough on the Gank, I can't seem to get a decent shield tank.
Unless EFT gives misleading figures for that?

Tank is easy. Baseline is an XL booster, boost amp, 4 hardeners and a cap booster to make it all run when you need it to. All t2, adjust for your playstyle. Some drop down to a large booster for increased cap-stability, some go with the deadspace gear for increased lag-defense/afk running.
Really, if you manage aggro, you almost never need to actually turn the booster on except in missions where the rats start out at their preferred orbits and you can't blow them all up when they're flying straight at you.

Depends what you consider decent I guess. If you want cap stability then it's a very hard thing to get. I personally fit pith A-type XL boost(cost me 700m), 2x DG SBA's, 3x DG Invuls and I tank every mission I've done. I've even tanked a double spawn in Blockade a few times when I've inadvertently killed the wrong BS and triggered a new spawn(3x overlords, 4x dead lords, and a tyrant) on my weakest resists.
Also confirming that in anything other than multifrequency range on pulses, tachs have better dps. --------

To me it seems that you're overtanking somewhat. I have a T2 tank on my CNR (XL, Amp, 2x EM 1x Therm, 2 PDS) and it has no difficulty with L4 Sansha Blockade at all. What rigs are you using?

3x ccc t1 rigs. I don't have any issue with tanking it either. I'm sure I could drop an invuln and fit something else, but there's not really a whole lot that I'd want in the mid. Maybe a faction web or something, but it's nice to have the extra tank for those "Oh ****, look what I did " moments --------

Eurgh its not a bloody drake whats with this tanking rubbish. The whole idea is to gank to tank with a Nightmare. Personally I don't have issues just using a 5 slot tank: XL T2 Booster T2 Shield Boost Amp 2 x Invulnerability Field T2 1 x Photon Hardner T2
Then a 100mn Afterburner with a Sensor Booster (usually loaded with scan res for locking frigs quick before they reach high transversal).
Never had an issue with this for nearly all missions as long as aggro is managed.

I usually overestimate the cleverness of eve players alot but if your using a Nightmare for running missions I presume its to speed run missions rather than go lolafk (Dominix). Still each to their own.

Originally by: Helen Incredible dps which doesn't require a faction/officer fit to do well, some people will say a Paladin would be better but frankly I fly both with max skills and I reckon my mission times are alot quicker with the Nightmare thanks to the tracking bonus letting me hit cruisers at <20km.
a paladin should have better tracking then a nightmare, as it is easier to fit 2 tc on a paladin then fitting 1 tc on a nightmare. 2 tc also help more killing off these 50km orbiting bs with multi (if you switch to range scripts)

Amarr bs 5 and two t2 tracking enhancers do about the same for the Nightmare as you don't need to use any of the lows for tanking. Plus you have med drones to swat any cruisers that happen to make it under 20km so its not really that big an issue and for me personaly no issue at all as I fit an ab so I always keep them at optimal.

Hmmm...
I follow these nightmare threads with interest. I run missions in a paladin atm and have great success with it. However the nightmare seems to have all the curent advantages of lasers - coupled with all the current advantages of sheilds. As long as you have reasonable skills in both amarr and caldari fits it seems the way to go so will be my next purchase.

I Hate CNRs, good now that that's out of the way... I also hate missiles. They are boring and missioning is boring enough so.... I got a nightmare for a different flavor. Normally I mission in my Nighthawk which has a faction fit, with some plex mods in there as well. But missiles are boring and if I wanna afk through a mish I would just use an Ishtar, drop my heavies and go make a sandwich. So, nightmare....
I use TS Mega Pulses I'm not worried about speed missioning or anything really and I like switching ammo as things get closer and really with my optimal on radio's at 47km fall off hitting at 57 ish... I haven't had any problems, my fit does not include crystals (they are saved in a JC for my other nightmare for PVP)
Cruisers Still go down with 1 or 2 volleys, frigates go down if far away with radio, and if they get close I have 15 Acolyte II's in the drone bay.
3x CCC I 3x TS Heatsinks 2x CPR II 2x Cap Rechargers 1x XL Booster II 1x DG Magnetic Amp 1x EM Hardener II 1x TH Hardener II 1x CN Boost Amp 4x TS Mega Pulses 2x TS Heavy Nos (why not I dont loot that's what alts are for)
4x All T1 crystals (they never run out.... why not use them, patience is a virtue.)
I have only needed to overheat the tank once, and it was just because 40% shield is uncomfortable to me, in Pirate Invasion because I waited and aggro'd the entire mission and put the Ballistic Hardener on by mistak, other than that it's been a nice entertaining ship to fly.

Every time you fit a Nightmare this way, a baby Sansha pirate dies. :(

Please for the love of god fit tachs even if just to try them they track like Mega Pulse with the Nightmare bonus and have superior range and dps. Especially as you aren't using Scorch with T2 Mega Pulse.
