Edited by: Rizmordan Hillgotlieb on 22/07/2004 00:43:45 Oh n00bular one... you obviously have not spent any amount of time on these boards. Threads whining about ore theft have been around as long as these forums have been...
but I have some some words of encouragement for you so you can drop this holy crusade to rid the forum of these types of threads...
As long as people legitimately take ore from people dumb enough to eject it into space and then complain about how stupid they are for having it stolen will you have these threads...
Just tell them to STFU and use secure cans, then point them HERE
That is all

Yeah...that particular piece of flimflam from CCP is one of the more obvious steaming heaps of crap they throw the player base hoping people with non-critical reading skills or a shred of logic will spew back at the rest of the playerbase to deflect criticism away from CCP.
Want to parse what they wrote?
Quote: They were designed so that any player could take from them because that was essential for them to function as they were intended. Players later invented the "container mining" method after noticing that the containers could hold way more than any cargo hold. This use for the containers was never intended and it has the obvious flaw that any player with a reduced sense of right and wrong can come by and take everything from the container and no one can do anything about it.
It is made to sound as if this is some relatively new issue, totally unforseen and yet one more example of players defeating the intent of the Devs. You get a different persepective when you realize jet cans were put in during Beta, people were jet can mining practically since the day they were put in and yet in over a year of game time this unintended consequence has never been addressed by the Devs and is left to stand.
Using language like "obvious flaw" makes it seem it is your fault for having something available people can scam and you can do nothing about it. This sidesteps the notion that something is unfair expecting you to accept it because it is obvious. If I travel into certain parts of the city I live in I can expect to get my ass kicked badly. It is obvious to me that going there is dumb but I will still feel free to be upset over my treatment (assuming I actually survive it).
Quote: Players who are thinking of taking up a career as ore thiefs should note that they will face a lifetime of unpopularity and unhappiness as a result.
That might almost be a fair tradeoff if the vast majority of Ore Thieves didn't use ALTs to avoid any consequences.
Quote: CCP has decided to meet players halfway by implementing secure containers that can be bought on the market and have the advantage of being equipped with a password lock. These containers cost money and do not hold the vast amount of ore that the regular containers do. However, with good organization and frequent ore pickups using Industrial ships, they can be very useful for large scale mining operations.
Halfway? Secure cans are hugely inconvenient to use (long time to anchor/unanchor, reposition as you move through a belt, can't anchor within a minimum rang eof other cans or the belt itself). Assumes "with good organization and frequent pickups" that pulling together large ops is a simple/common thing to do...nevermind that a significant portion of players mine solo as often as in groups. Newbs can't use secure cans anyway. If a newb can use a secure can they cannot use them in 1.0 & 0.9 systems. And of course secure cans became an annoying, 'exploited' item unto themselves.
Quote: Having your valuables floating in space in an unsecured container is equivalent to throwing money on the street. Should you lurk nearby and wait for someone to take the money and then attack him, the police would deal with you, not him. The same goes in Eve. If you attack a player who just took "your" ore from a regular container in a system with a security level of 0.5 or higher. You will be destroyed by Concord.
Jet can mining is like throwing money in the street? I think not. More like I am emptying my pockets into a neat pile right next to me for some reason and some comes by and swipes it while I am standing there. Does anyone honestly think if a cop watched that occur the cop would shrug and let the guy who swiped your stuff go? I think not...especially if you yell "thief" when it happens.
Jet can mining is really more akin to mining gold in old days. If you were a miner you'd be piling what you mined next to you as you worked. If CCP ran things back then apparently they'd maintain you had thrown that stuff away and anyone that wanted to is free to come take what they can carry. If the miner tries to protect his/her work the CCP Police will shoot them. Makes perfect sense
Bottom line is we call these people ore thieves for a reason. It is abundantly clear to all they are stealing...not walking away with unclaimed goods just lying about. That might be well and good if CCP didn't conspire to actually have the police protect the thieves. In the end I think that is what is most upsetting.

I havent bothered to read any of the other posts on this thread.
However, Ore theft should be actively encouraged, my old corp would supply me with several convo's a week from interaction from a space lane cleaner and a space lane litter bug. Very entertaining.
Ive never done it, i have been a victim of it, but i fully support the educational process of preventing people throwing ore away into the clogged space lanes!
LONG LIVE THE SPACE LANE SWEEPERS!

Ore thieves = ok
Not having a way to effectively blow them up for thieving? That makes baby Jesus cry.
There should be some risk associated with stealing someone else's hard work (or at least really boring work). Right now there is none.

There is risk in 0.4 and lower. In 0.5 and up the ore thief has the best support fleet in the game at their back. Near instant responding, Johnny-on-the-spot 24/7 uber gankers called CONCORD. Further, game rules back the thief up. If the dudes who zapped your indy had CONCORD after them and avoided CONCORD then they are guilty of an exploit as well. IIRC avoiding CONCORD punishment is an exploit. If they are after you then you must die.
Given all of that I cannot see what you are complaining about as short of an invulnerable hauler it doesn't get much better than that for backup for an ore thief. The miner could have 20 battleship friends surrounding him and not be an as good of a position.

Jesus, are people still banging on about this crap?
There is no such thing as ore theft in Eve. If you JETTISON a can from your ship, it no longer belongs to you, therefore anyone can take what they like from it.
If you want to keep the ore, do not shoot it into space. If you want to mine into a can, get a secure one.
What is so hard to understand about this? -------------------------------------------- Dead

What is hard to understand is people like you who take this view.
People are not shooting their ore across the solar system. They are piling it next to them for later transport. It is impossible to see how anyone thinks that the person is throwing it away and is actually putting it there for anyone to come along and take.
If you go through an airport and empty your pockets at security is anyone free to stroll by and take your stuff out of the tray because it is now no longer on your person? If you think that is how things work give it a try sometime...see what happens.

Puhlease. Get a brain. In fact, get a SECURE container. Its not difficult.
If you jet a can, its anyones, no matter if its 100km from your ship, or 2cm's. Your crappy airport analogy is irrelevant to Eve. If you jet a can, its anyones. I'll spell it out again, for the terminally dumb:
