And I have two candidates in mind. Both of them are Dell's.(Waitforitwaitforitwaitforit!) I have a m1210 and it's a nice little beasty and can run EVE on classic client rather well. However it's time for an upgrade.
The first contestant is their new Studio 17 laptop. I rather like the atrsy covers and they don't seem bad in the power deparments.
These are the specs of one I may buy:

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista« Home Premium Service Pack 1 64 Bit
OFFICE SOFTWARE Microsoft« Works Plus 2008
WARRANTY AND SERVICE 2Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor, 24x7 Phone Support
HD DISPLAY Hi Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920x1200)
MEMORY 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
HARD DRIVE Size: 320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
INTEGRATED WEBCAM Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
BATTERY OPTIONS 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
SOUND OPTIONS blah blah blah standard crap audio... (Back-lit Keyboard too sweetness....)
Grand total after discounts blah blah is $ 1920.15 USD
My second candidate is an XPS 1530
PROCESSOR Intel« CoreÖ 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB, 6MB Cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista « Home Premium Edition SP1
PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE No Microsoft Office

Grand Total is $ 1340.90
Is the studio 17 worth the price? I'm not really a hard core gamer but I do have a small, uh, backlog of pc titles yet to be played Which would you get if you had no other choices?

The 1530 has a bit of an issue with heat disipation. Seems not to be widespread enough to cause much PR fallout but I've heard of a few cases of the GPU overheating and failing over time.
I'm unaware of how the studio 17 preforms in that regard but I don't think it's quite as slimmed down as the 1530 so it likely has better heat sinking. A herd of cattle A flock of geese A lot of isk |

I have read at least one review about the studio 17 and the writer seemed to think it did fine with heat. I was not aware of the 1530's problem tho, thank you
I am very aware of XP's superiority, if I could get them to ship it with that instead vista... shin ku myo u |

And in which field is XP superiour to Vista other than the ignorance one? Vista is far more a powerful software than XP, unless you try to run it on your Celeron 500,64MB RAM and 5GB HD. But then I wish you luck with running XP on that as well and not having problems.

I suppose all the complaints I've heard about Vista were just the incoherent ramblings of idiots, pardon me.

Edited by: Layrex on 02/01/2009 13:09:50 The Acer 6920G will be almost as powerful as that, yet somewhat more affordable:
ATI Radeon HD3650 512mb T5750 2.0GHZ Duo Blu Ray/HDMI Vista 3GB Memory 250GB HDD 16" HD Screen
I know this is weaker than the one you've got your eye on, but it'll be alot cheaper, and it runs eve premium like a dream. It also ran The Witcher on full when I tested it.

You should check they have sorted out the nvidia laptop graphics cards for your particular choice(the second one), they were continually failing over last few years. You can google an account of all their problems.
Make sure you are not getting old stock in your new laptop, in fact I would ask for it mentioned in your warranty that if the card fails, you are given a full refund or an alternative machine.

Edited by: jason hill on 04/01/2009 19:32:21 just bought a studio 17 with vista on (i beta tested vista a few years ago for the company i was working for at the time)atm the mo im pretty impressed with it which i found quite suprising the lappy is pretty smooth vista i find is pretty wonky ....but that prolly cos ive not used it for some time ... i will stick with vista for the mo till it gets to the stage where its ****ing me off with DRM...but atm not many complaints tbh.... so to sum up... ú650 reasonably well spent .and yes i i bought it from pc world which was prolly a bad move cos it took 45 mins to get served but i needed a lappy asap and the wifes bought me it
edit ...the keyboard takes a little bit of getting used to though ...but still no complaints

As for Vista, depends on where you buy it from. I know some places allow you to buy laptops without any OS and it'l be much cheaper - great if you have an XP CD lying around I suppose.

Edited by: Last Wolf on 04/01/2009 20:00:47 Server 2008 is awesome. Looks like vista, and even more Rock-solid than XP. My Server 2008 has yet to crash on me, except when I was trying to Overclock my CPU. Even then I got it to a higher overclock than I could with XP (Exact same hardware). Server 2008 seems to take less processing power during the boot-up than XP does.
Did I mention you can get it for free?.

I've always been a fan of the smaller, 12 and 13 inch laptops because well.you tend to carry them around a lot. (if you want to game or run photoshop or w/e get a nice 22 wide-screen for on your desk..)
I've owned a Benq 12.1' weighing in at 1.5kg including battery for three years now ad have been more than spoiled by the ease at which I can carry it around. Those 17 inch monsters are NOT laptops.

Well it depends what you do with it I suppose. If you use it on the train, in coffee shops and the like then smaller is better - if you just want to move it from one place to another without needing a car, then even a 17" is fine...
I think 15.4 is fine really.

Yea exactly. I wanted a powerful laptop with a large screen, so I could play eve or whatever when over my gf's house.

Edited by: Rondo Gunn on 04/01/2009 22:26:54 Well, I was looking at the 17 because it's options were a little more flexible than the 15. I've had a m1210 shortly after they were introduced, it's good, runs eve is classic very smoothly (and with 'integrated' graphics no less) and is very lightweight. However, I've tired of the puny screen tbqfh. I can deal with the weight of a 17 inch, I'm no girly man. That, and this thing won't be dragged around that often.
I will be sure that the videocard problem is sorted. I have heard nvidia cards have been having problems but I've never really payed much attention, however now that I'm buying I've been reading around and making sure my investment will be sound for at least 2 years.

Heh heh. I've looked at the Acer, it's not bad at all. I'm just limited to selecting either a dell or a dell lol. I'm not a fanboi but I do like my current dell laptop plus theyre in my neighborhood so if I REALLY want to file a complaint I can do it in person and at maximum volume. shin ku myo u |
