I have been browsing but haven't noticed an answer to my particular question. So I hope someone can enlighten me. When passive shield tanking, I assume that people use the passive shield rechargers to get their shields back up quickly. But since those are medium slots, do people use actual shield hardeners too? I was curious what the best passive shield set up would be, and naturally since I love to turtle in my ship I was thinking about the highest resistances possible.
So if anyone could enlighten me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Shield Power Relays in the lows, Purger rigs. Mids are different depending on your philosophy, but a friend of mine fits his drakes with two LSE IIs, two hardeners (active), and two shield rechargers. Other people would use passive amps and forget the rechargers, or etc. I'm not entirely sure which is better off the top of my head.

Many people use Shield Extenders + passive or active Shield resistance mods in the mids with Shield Power Relays in the low slots and for a real passive shield tank there is also the Core Defense Field Purger rigs for even more passive regen. The SPRs leave your cap regen in the toilet but it works well.

The optimal combination of extenders/rechargers/amps/hardeners in mids depends on the ship, and on how many damage mods vs SPRs you have in the lows. Generally, you fit weapons and purgers first, then damage mods and SPRs, as many oversized (for your ship class) extenders as your grid allows, then as many hardeners as your cap recharge rate still allows (since it's down in the toilet from the SPRs), after that you either add rechargers or passive amps, depending on resist holes you still need filling or on wether you just want an overall better tank. Alternatively, you can mix SPRs and PDSs in the lows (or just PDSs for PvP sometimes), even go for one DC. Others go with extender rigs instead of purgers too (especially for PvP where buffer>regen most of the time). For PvP, you also might want a MWD, which changes a lot of things, and if you want to also add some tackle mods, it gets even weirder for a passive tank.
There's no single way to passive-tank a ship, it depends a lot on circumstances you want to use the ship in.

Edited by: FlameGlow on 08/01/2009 18:44:19 For PVP you should fit tank like so: mwd, shield extenders and hardeners in mids; PDS,damage control &weapon upgrades in lows, extender rigs. |

Passive tanks seem like a bit of a waste. I mean, you have all that cap just going to waste, right? Until you come up against a Curse or some other nos'ing beast and you're left with a tank that will run dry in no time. Passive tanks are immune to this. Even for a passive tank with active hardners. Take a look at this to give you an idea of what you will need to run a 'decent' passive shield tank and the skills needed for it.
Keep in mind, this is an exotic build but it should give you an idea of how to effectively passive tank sheilds. For armor tankers, it's a little easier. Us Minnie's have to cross-train piles of stuff to make use of sheild tanks.
Anyone got a spare mid? Ahem.

If using SPRs in the lows, the shield rechargers in the mids become pretty useless (stacked to death). Stick to extenders and resists in the mids (stack-proof), and leave the lows/rigs for your regen. That being said, if you KNOW what you are going against, you can get more hp/s by using the specific resist rigs than the purgers.
And rule on of passive tanking... don't PvP with it.. ;-)

Clansworth said "If using SPRs in the lows, the shield rechargers in the mids become pretty useless (stacked to death)." That's totally wrong as there is no stacking so there is no sacked to death.

The reason for active hardners with a passive shield tank is simple: < Shield resist = > Damage taken = Tank lasts longer = 'stronger' regen It's not actually stronger, but regen can keep up with damage better and hit higher regen rates sooner. Hence a 13,000 HP tank can have a 40,000-50,000 EHP (Effective HP), due to the combonation of resists and regen. |
