Not saying this is what they're planning or anything like that. This is simply a "what if" question.
If CCP wiped everyones character data and restarted EvE fresh and new, would you still play?

What if CCP reset the servers ? Hmm... What if Raptor Zombie Robot Jesus would show up before me and asked me to make three wishes, what would those three wishes be ? Both question have a roughly equal chance of actually happening.
Other than that... meh... don't know.
On one hand, EVE is pretty damned good, and considering you get an equal chance to everybody else (even much older players), and considering you already have a lot of experience knowing what/when/if to do something, it sounds barely attractive.
On the other hand, I'd be seriously miffed about waiting a couple of years until I could do whatever I can do right now, and even more seriously upset about having to re-acquire everything I currently have, so all in all I'd have to say quitting it all would sound like a much more likely scenario. ESPECIALLY since, you know "they did it once, they'd do it again".
Losing 99% of subscribers seems a bit harsh though... more like 97.5%

Basically if CCP wiped the server a couple things would happen.
1. Most the player base would vanish in a horrid holocaust of forum whines and emorage quit threadnoughts. The forums would be completely uninhabitable due to fallout.
2. The new player base would be 95% Achura. |

i reckon you'd find that the current powers that be, gs, gbc, etc etc, would all move to take vast amounts of territory very early, as these are fairly well organised on their own forums outside of eve servers. newbie corps, smaller corps wouldn't have the same chance.

I think a more interesting and plausible what-if would be if due to the POS exploit/game overhaul of sov mechanics they removed all POS and player built outposts from 0.0. (assuming they moved all player/corp assets to the closest NPC station.)
Imagine the mad dash for sov / moon control all over null sec

Though my current primary is over 18 months old, a lot of that was spent not subscribed. Even so, I'd not return to EVE if they wiped it.
People who want that (not pointing the finger at the OP here) are idiots. WHO CARES IF SOMEONE HAS MORE SKILL POINTS THAN YOU?! There are also new people who have less than you. The game would be boring as hell if everyone was at the same approximate level, just like in real life there are always people younger and older or worse and better at various things than you.
Splitting the severs, wiping the servers, boosted-SP-weekends... it's all ridiculous.

Out of my 196 skills / 31 million SPs I think I could retrain all the ones I actually utilize back up to their current levels inside of a year's time, which I suppose would be bearable. In a way I guess it could be fun to start over.
CCP would have to be 100% transparent about every aspect of why the servers and the backup data I assume they also have all exploded though.

I wouldn't mind start from scratch in such a case. Perhaps the game would be more interesting without all these caps and supercaps. The fun would be the same . It's just the ships that would be smaller. |

If they wiped the servers it would suck cause there'd be too many people racing with each other to maximise their sp gain. We could do without way way way above average new started achura characters that even set their alarm clocks in keeping up and following their concise calculated skillplan while rushing to manufacture +5 implants.
Whereas as it is at the moment noone cares too much as there's no way in hell they can catch up to the sp's of the oldest vets.

Whilst it would be a total drag if they did, I think I would still play.
Put it this way, it would still be the best MMO out there, and the only real option if you like internet spaceships.
Additionally, think of how crazy the rush for 0.0 would be. Also, suddenly loads of things would become viable... like invention... etc.
Actually... heres a thought:
As an academic exercise, I'd quite like to see a parallel Eve online server with slightly different rules (which would need to be fleshed out), which gets reset every month or so. Could be fairly funny!

No it doesn't... because, as I understand it, the resets are just forked copies of the TQ database at the time.
I'm talking about a proper server, with thousands of people, reset every couple of months, which may be much less stable and much more of a rat-race. I expect no-one would be trying to hoard money for the future any more - it'd be all about the PvP.
I'm not actually advocating it, just saying it might be interesting to see how that affects the game. |

It would be fun, people rushing to grind ISK to secure the names of every major alliance that has ever existed and try to sell them. (WTS: Band of Brothers & Red Alliance!)
T1 production and mining would be huge initially, 0.0 very empty because it would take months before anyone could afford any major POS installations let alone outposts.
People would immediately start several alts to train for capital ships, and buy blueprints and start researching them asap for the great capital rush that would occur after approximately nine months.

They'd have to scramble the moon minerals or the old maps would still work. This would mean a massive effort to probe moons, spam POSes, and establish T2 production. This would be very difficult though because there'd be no battleships for sale, and no ice for sale, so it'd be pretty damn hard to "rush" to L4 missions to get the 100M isk needed for a small POS tower, not to mention the countless millions you'd spend on moon probes and on modules.
And even then, who would buy the dysprosium from you? Who would you turn around and buy ice from? In fact I think you'd have to mine your own damn ice and stockpile your dsyprosium.
Basically it'd be a big challenge because there'd be no money and nothing on the market, everyone would be grinding L1 missions or mining in rookie ships working on building themselves a bigger ship.
With massive manpower, you could get ahead quicker than everybody else.
It'd be kind of fun.

A better question. What if all assets/isk//implants/POS/Outposts (But not Conqurables), basically anything player made, were wiped from the game, but skill points remained intact.
At the very least, I'd like to see the mayhem of 0.0 being reset and everybody relocated to empire/lowsec.
Patch could be called "Ready....Set....PEWPEW!"

Are you implying that what is on the EVE servers isn't real? And how can you define what is in the 'real' world as real, without also having the content of the EVE servers defined as real?
You are operating with a definition of real that excludes digital data, not due to some intrinsic properties of your definition, but rather because your definition excludes those virtual worlds explicitly. That data does actually have physical manifestation, it's just that we can observe and interact with it through rather nontraditional means.
So, what is real? And what are real memories? Are not both transient?
IMO, the game is as real as 'real life', because both are about living in a transient world, and hoping to leave marks on the world for eternity is a losing proposition.
PS. The moderators are on crack and can't spot a philosophical question if it bit them in the ass. |

How about this for a what if scenario. Alot of people would be ****ed about lost training time and wasted money (as they should). What if CCP did have their servers wiped, but offered everyone the same amount of paid time each subscriber had for free in return (ie 1 year lost, 1 year free of play). Would you still play eve?
To answer all the trolls first, i have a 50 mil sp char, and love it, seeing it die in a horrible server malfunction would suck and i would have some emo rage moments too. However, it would be interesting to see what would happen if we all started from square one. Kinda like what it would be like if we all lived in a post apocolypotic nuclear holocaust. Its fun to think what its like (ala Fallout3) but obviously not very fun to acutally live in it. |

well, since i've been playing .. march 2004? i dunno.. i've thought abuot it a few times.
ragequit once (blew up first BS, that i worked 6 months for, on my first pass into .4 for more than 2 minutes)..
quit out of horrible boredom about 2 years ago, for 6+ months. only regret is the SP's i lost. got BS 5 tho, so it wasnt all bad.
have a 32 mill SP alt, sold a 16 mill SP alt.. and have started yet another.
the only real reason i have them is because i .. can afford GTC's with isk.
if server was wiped.. i wouldnt come back.. and wouldnt be mad either. it would be sweet relief..
there would be no more GUILT about not gaining SP's..
would prolly not play another MMO for 2 years. dont like them much now. |
