FYI windows 7 isn't that new, they actually had it made before vista was even released. They thought vista was going to be the ****, lol they were wrong. So now they are trashing vista and going back to windows 7. |

Actually, no it is not right. Windows 7 shares most of it's codebase with Vista. |

in that case why is windows 7 based on windows vista and not windows xp or a codepath not yet released? |

Just don't try it, logic doesn't work in GD, must be a cosmic anomaly or something. |

Windows 7 != MinWin, if that's what you mean. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. What I mean is that MinWin is not some sort of new OS kernel. They are not "trashing" Vista and moving to a different OS. MinWin was just an effort to componentize Windows and strip it down to a minimal core functional OS.

Quoted for truth, Microsoft has been failing to invent for 15 years... What makes you think that after Vista they will release something ultimately better. Just because you want something else, you start to falsely hope that there must be something else. You want something better that Vista, you deceive yourself that MS Windows 7 is in fact better.
No, Microsoft doesn't want to improve the product quality, as it enjoys the monopoly for Computing in the World. PC, internet, DirectX, Office... Intel, Nvidia, it all works under Microsoft, all of it is patented and no one can reproduce even icons or folders.
Microsoft is biggest obstacle to computing industry progress, don't believe the media, it's controlled by computer companies.

To keep this thread from derailing, I have windows 7 installed on an acer aspire one netbook, runs fine with the classic client (fullscreen), as far as "fine" goes on these machines...

Lol, Windows 7 is a revamped Vista where they have removed all the annoying and unneeded stuff to speed up the OS and make it efficent to use.

I can run eve fine on Windows 7. Only problem is that you cant run it in windowed mode because the titlebar refuses to be cut off, so the bottom of eve gets cut off/

Loot at this guy, he's probably right. There's no point in blaming Microsoft for making a crappy OS, but there is a point in blaming you for buying and using it.
Military experts are calling this a free market.
So stop using or stop whining, either way: problem solved.

Anyone that plays half decent games has windows installed. Its a gaming platform first and last.
Anything in between is just 'product diversification' done badly, but nicely packaged!
If it wasn't so, we'd all be on Amiga's and Atari STs playing.
Win7 is vista without the V I S T A part and some re-re-re-re-writes of things like Network stacks.
Whoever said Win7 was about before Vista is right and wrong.
They are right in that the blackcomb project got put on hold as it was NAFF and some part of it appeared as Vista.
I don't quite understand the terminology of a 'development "RESET"' but it sure sounds like they scrapped it and started again.
So, er it was before vista before it got reset and now has more in common with vista than anything else out there. Hopefully, it will FLY! To make a mistake is Human. To make a REALLY BIG mistake, takes a computer |

Actually, no it is not right. Windows 7 shares most of it's codebase with Vista.
I think the point they are making is, that Vista shares most of it's code base with Windows 7. |

Edited by: mishkof on 13/01/2009 19:47:01 Thanks for posting this question. Good answers overall as well.
As for the "I hate microsoft" rants I have had the privilage of seeing business ideas developed from the ground up under the architecture of all types of software. mysql vs mssql, asp.net vs php/pearl, vista vs linux vs mac. In the case of every project, even though the software was more expensive the projects as a whole were done under budget and completed more quickly using the microsoft platforms.
Granted this is real world applicable where every day costs a dollar amount and not some custom web server OS done as a hobby where the advantages of open source can really shine.
Until this changes Windows is here to stay. |

This x 100000000, when I started working for my current company, they had 10 servers, each of which ran a different variant of either redhat 8/9, suse 10, ubuntu 7, or fedora 6-8, and all 70+ workstations ran XP Home. Productivity was laughable, stability was a joke, and backups weren't existent.
I spent $20k, upgraded all workstations to XP Pro, all servers to Windows 2008 or OpenSuse 10.3. Productivity and Six-Sigma stats show massive improvements over the former architecture. |
