Actually I took the time to use a temperature conversion site prior to posting seeing a Celsius is more reconized in this international community forum. In many places in the US it has already dipped below -30 Fahrenheit, which according to the conversion site I used is -34 Celsius.
I personally dont know how to convert between various temperature measurements which is why I used the site in the first place.
Temperature in F = Temperature in C x 1.8 + 34. (roughly)
As for the low temperatures in Chicago, Wind chill pulls it down quite a bit, and you forget that unlike Europe, the US doesn't have a nice warm gulf stream close by, the temperatures in winter tend to be a good deal lower because of that.

Fixed. It's easy if you remember that water freezes at 0 C/32 F and that -40C = -40F.
I have personally experienced -40 without windchill. Add a bit of wind and you get a most delightful burning sensation on any exposed skin. If you're going to be outside very long, you need to put vaseline or, more traditionally, seal fat wherever clothing doesn't cover.
P.S. This "Alberta Clipper" that's making you all so cold is probably a result of the chinook that brought the temp above 0 C on the weekend. Harrrr. In before Ralara. |

If I recall Chicago is named the windy city either due to the city government at the time bragging about the city was hosting the worlds fair and a newspaper nicknamed the city that as an insult that back fired or because of Chicagos infamous record of producing corrupt political leaders.
Either way though its windy right now and cold enough that im sure even hell has cooled down a few degrees. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

It's 41 degrees C here today (East Coast of Australia) and typing this message has sapped all energy from me... I wish i could afford an air conditioner!! I think it's about time to get in the car, turn on the air-con, and drive around the block for the next 12 hours or so. Last night it was 30 deg C at midnight. I'm selling this house, so soon i'll be moving to a lovely new place with air-con, THANK GOD!!!!

Global warming is a stupid useless description. It also doesnt describe the issue.
Furthermore man gives himself too much credit.
The word your looking for is Man Made Global Climate Change. This is the proper definition for what "going green" is supposed to address. The problem is that most green solutions are worse for the planet then current solutions.
Also, I don't know how far in the negatives it is here, but everything is frozen and I actually cant get my door open to go outside so guess I will wait till de-thaw.

-31C in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan tonight...
We've gotten about 60cm (~2') of snow the last couple days, me and my roomates bundled up and made a snow fort this evening
Was quite nice out before the wind picked up, but now we're looking at -40 to -45C with windchill tonight... still beats the -41C without windchill weather we had the first weekend of the year, though (with windchill we were down to like, -55 to -60C, if I recall correctly).
Heh, wish I was back in Edmonton, I do |

In Milwaukie, OR, USA, it is going to be about 45 F. End of December last year we had our worst storm since the 60's, got into the high 20's (F) at my house. Pretty mild most of the time here. |

Nah...
Chicago current temp (I live here) is -7F/-23C. Wind chill (how it feels) is -29F/-34C.
The coldest temperature ever recorded was in Antarctica in 1983 when it got down to -129F/-89C. So it gets a LOT colder there.
And despite Chicago being the "Windy City" as noted it is for other reasons than its wind. It does get windy in Chicago but not especially so compared to many other cities (although on occasion it can get super windy and the buildings downtown tend to make a wind tunnel effect that can amplify the wind).
In this cold however the wind definitely makes you feel it more. Quite obvious when you walk from behind a building blocking the wind into the gusts.

Only time I ever went to Chicago it was like 90 outside and had a humidity of like 70%. Literally felt like an oven. That was also the first and only time I ever saw a firefly.

Chicago is a city of extreme temperatures. Cold ass winters and boiling summers. While it gets hotter in other places Chicago humidity can hit over 90% (your hair can remain wet for hours after a shower).
Really Chicago weather is all over the place. Sometimes we have mild summers and winters (last summer was great...very moderate temps). The old joke in Chicago though is if you do not like the weather wait five minutes and it'll change.
And I never thought fireflies were not anything but everywhere. I'd have expected them where you live. Certainly are plenty here. Lots of fun as a kid to catch them and put them in a jar where they all blink on and off all night in your room. Very pleasant insects they are.
