In less than 18 hours it will be -34 to -40 degrees Celsius here in Chicago with wind chill. How cold will it be for where you live in the same time frame? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Actually, after a terribly-british panic because of the terrifyingly cold temperatures that gripped parts of the UK for a couple of weeks, it's started to warm up over the last week. Instead of being as low as -10, which is frightening if you're a brit like me - we go to pieces if it hits -1, let alone -10 - we've popped back up to as high as 10 in some places! lol.

Edited by: Rieger VaunBraun on 14/01/2009 14:50:23 -40C before the wind chill it has to be colder than -50 with it here in Northern Ontario. Snow blowing the driveway was a whole lot of no fun last night.

About 2 days after I posted the snow pics mother nature decided to warm up n rain leaving me with a lake in my driveway complete with my man made glaciers from shoveling earlier.
This week we've had the inversion from hell. Mid 30's/40's and no sun for the last few days. Yesterday the fog stuck around all day which is a first for here for as long as I can remember. |

The temperatures has been above 0 all day today in Sweden, but tomorrow it seems to be getting a bit colder. Not sure how cold, but there is no way its going to -40 C.... perhaps -10 C...

Been around 8 C here in north wales, will drop to 1 C at night. I couldn't handle the huge difference in temperature some countries get between summer and winter.

I used to live in Sao Luis when I was a kid. Small world indeed. And here in Iceland we're clocking a balmy 1 degrees Centigrade with a thin fuzz of snow on the ground. It doesn't feel like winter at all. |

I got a nice story about weather this cold.
Back in college when I was in the dorms, our heaters had two settings. Off and Kenya. It was common practice that people would open their windows a bit to make our rooms a bit more comfortable. It was also common practice to leave our dorm rooms open since we were all friends.
Well, one day I was coming back from class when it was -20C outside. I get up to my floor and open the door and suddenly, I get hit with cold air. I look down the dorm hallway and notice that everyone's door is closed except for one. Mine. I walk down there and what do I see? My roommate has our door wide open, window wide open and he is at his desk wearing a sweater! Talk about moronic... |

Here in the US cold temps like that are caused by what is referred to as an Alberta Clipper.
The one Chicago is currently experiencing is just beginning to hit us here in Buffalo. Thankfully Lake Erie will moderate the temps a bit, but it should still get down to around -20 C here.

Chicago is the land of extremes. We have 30 C degree summers and -30 C degree winters and some nasty weather in between. |

Friggin' metric mooks. -40 C is maybe possible, in Antarctica, deep in the winter... |

so are the other posters talking in fahrenheit or something? because I thought they were talking in celsuis, ie: zero degrees is freezing, -20 causes your urine and spit to freeze as it leaves your body etc |

Actually I took the time to use a temperature conversion site prior to posting seeing a Celsius is more reconized in this international community forum. In many places in the US it has already dipped below -30 Fahrenheit, which according to the conversion site I used is -34 Celsius.
I personally dont know how to convert between various temperature measurements which is why I used the site in the first place. |
