Well, let's just say that when you have a holiday, or lots of free time otherwise, you can fit 4 MMOs in 6 hour cycles |

Creative was letting your character train a new skill while unsubbed and give you something interesting to come back to after getting bored of the game. CCP don't WANT TO LET ME PLAY FOR FREE
I fixed your sentence.... now go **** off. Thanks.

Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 15/01/2009 17:22:21 Part of the problem is the Star Trek license. Paramount throws so many restrictions on anyone doing anything with the Star Trek universe they are throttled into making watered down, feel goody products. Even the villains are only mildly evil.
As such STO will never come close to the depth and breadth of EVE. CCP can do pretty much anything they want and specifically crafted a game to appeal to adults looking for a edgy universe. STO will be strictly PG rated vanilla blandness. Don't want to upset people too much now do we. If your ship goes pop doubtless the Federation will have an infinite supply to hand it back to you (and that is assuming your ship can pop in the first place...rule #1 in Star Trek is the ship always gets away intact...at least till it is time to insert a more spiffy, updated model).
There is absolutely no one out there who seems remotely interested in producing anything as dark or brutal as the EVE universe. The marketing departments, in their typical idiocy, do market research that says people do not like dying in games so don't do it. Guess EVE is the exception that proves the rule. CCP is safe for at least the next three years and probably more.

AND there is still pvp in STO as well, it may be consensual, buuut still

As a 4 year player of City of Heroes, I can safely say that Cryptic wouldn't know a decent PvP mechanic if it punched them in the face.

Lol @ the "Eve is safe b'cos STO won't have Eve-type pvp" answers. Why do you think over 3/4 of Eve players live in highsec (or was that 15% in 0.0 according to a QEN a while ago ?). The pvp-fanbois aren't the majority in Eve, "wardecs, suicideganks, scamming, corptheft" attracts only a minority, there is a huge ammount of people who'd like to enjoy a space MMO without being harassed in their game expirience by 27 year old e-warriors that live in their mom's basement and grief others because they are still virgins.
If STO won't flop horribly, there will certainly be a huge ammount of players switching from Eve to STO, the question will then be how many.

The only other space MMO I've seen that has any interest for me would be Infinity Earth: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php
It's more than a year away and will have all the growing pains of EVE and then some, but it's truely a beautiful looking game so far and I would love to see what Infinity Earth is doing with planets in EVE. CCP should just buy the IP and incorporate it into EVE.
This is a neat video: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=45&Itemid=93

Alts, ever hear of them? I'm a purely PvP player and carebear only the absolute minimum required to pay my bills, but 66% of my characters are permanently in highsec, while 83% of them have never fired a shot in PvP. That's a -10 main, a covops/hauler alt, two CEO alts, and two random characters who never left the starter station.
So in fact, 25% of the characters living outside of highsec is an extremely high percentage. ==========

Originally by: Eleanor DeAquitaine From what I've seen of it's development they are still making the same crappy game that Perpetual was. "Everyone's the captain" type BS instead of the intense crew based exploration, problem solving, and such that makes Star Trek.
Basically it's WOW with phasers. I'll pass.
See, that's something I don't get. The crew-based model just made no sense to me. Are you really going to get that many people who want to monitor the Dilithium Crystals to make sure they're at the most optimal efficiency, or is everyone going to want to be Kirk or Picard and blow the **** out of some enemy? Hell, there may be more gunnery crew than captains.
Sure, there will be a few who are into the more esoteric aspects of the game, but the majority will be the pew-pew types who want action, even if they're the science types who want to fight a new and deadly disease. But I just can't imagine there being enough to fulfill a complete crew compliment for the majority of players. Thus they won't be able to do much of anything in the game. |

To the guy who thinks the "everyone's the captain" makes for bad gameplay, then how do you explain EVE's success using the same model?

Just curious. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.
