MUDs are generally to be the first generation of MMOs. The second generation of MMOs would be the first generation of graphical MMOs, more or less. It also depends on how much you care about MUD genealogy. I don't know if some people break them into multiple generations before the graphical MMOs launched.
There's not really even a need to break them up into multiple generations that way, anyway. In a timeline, the simple fact that one doesn't start to appear until a certain year on a timeline itself breaks it up into generations. |

This is true. I was more referring to the arbitrary claim of "MMOs started with X", when MMO is a well-defined term and it's generally accepted that MUDs were the first generation of MMOs. I didn't mean that there was an actual need to break MUDs up into generations =) |

the worst game ive ever played althoguh the map and idea was great the company behind it were terrible, they ran a 3 month? beta of the game that i played and it had no content other than killing npc for exp. they launched the game in a very similat state the beta was in and of course was a terrible failure. |
