Preface: This is not exclusively EVE, though I have included all EVE releases in it. I considered placing this in Out of Pod, but this is not about naming my cat or anything and does involve EVE to a degree. I'll understand if CCP moves this, though. Otherwise, thank you to everyone who reads this and considers it. If you can't contribute, I hope it is of at least some passing curiosity to you.
Link: Timeline of Massively Multiplayer Online Games
Project: I tried to find a timeline of all MMOs and there was none to be found, short of some that were specific only to MUDs or modern MMOs and even those tended to include a lot of crazy unrelated historical entries, dating back to the introduction of writing fiction to humanity many centuries ago. None were very complete.
So, being a somewhat obsessive-compulsive geek about certain things, I began to put my own timeline together. It currently holds almost 70 titles - including all EVE releases - dating back to the very first MUD, through TW2001/2, The Realm and onward.
Being that there is no existing solid list of every MMO that has existed, I am now reaching the point where external contribution would be greatly appreciated to make the timeline more complete.
The timeline is open to be edited by everyone, so please contribute if you are interested in this sort of thing as I am. If you would like to be added to the list as an official editor, just let me know once you have an account (I believe you have to have an account to do it) and I'll add you. Note that you can edit even without my permission, though. I've left it public and editable.
What Qualifies: I want to include everything that fits a reasonable definition of MMO and not cave in to any potential snobbery. If it is a persistent multiplayer world, then I feel it should qualify. That means that Trade Wars should count, even though you weren't playing against thousands of other people in the same world. Barren Realms Elite counts, because it could be connected to many other BBSes and inter-board play then ensue. However, certain things don't really qualify. Primarily. FPSes - even if they retain your stats (K:D ration, for example). So no Bad Company. There isn't really any "world" there that persists. I hope that makes sense. However, Planetside does, because the world is persistent, even though it's essentially an FPS.
Note that at the moment, I have been focused on filling out entries. Getting the names and basic links to existing information about a title (wiki or elsewhere) and a box-shot or screenshot or logo has been my first goal. I intend to run through a second time, adding more specific data about the game, history related to it, screenshots and any other interesting data in a mission to refine the list. |

Well I don't have time to get into editing and all that, but I will point out a couple of missing MMO's
Saga of Rhyzom is one, had some great ideas, but never really took off. There was also an MMO on the old Sierra Network, I can't remember the name although I am sure that the word Maze was in it, it was either Alamaze or Madmaze. I also didn't see Jumpgate or Earth and Beyond on your list.
Finally, you listed all of the EVE expansions but none of the expansions from other games. Is that being EVE-Centric or you just didn't get around to listing those?

I don't recall such a game off hand and couldn't find it on a list of Sierra games, so hopefully someone will know what that was and let us know.
Quote: I also didn't see Jumpgate or Earth and Beyond on your list.
Except for the next EVE expansion, I haven't been adding unreleased MMOs. It might be a good idea to do that eventually and then just remember to go back and edit them later to correct the release date or - in some inevitable cases - note that they were never actually released.

Just bias toward including those first based on personal interest. Certainly happy for people to go add missing expansions for other games to it (and I will get around to some of them myself, eventually).
Initially, I wasn't going to include expansions at all, but then I realized it can't be a complete list and then only include the very first main release and nothing else. |

Earth and Beyond was Release. It was quite good. Had some funny bits in it - for example the company Tada-O singsong voice. In fact I believe theres an attempt going on to create an emulator for it somewhere.

Jumpgate was released years ago, it's now known as jumpgate classic and is still going on a small scale.

Apart from adding other games expansions as well, I'd also would add the closing of several MMOGs.
Dark and Light closed their servers some time summer 2008.
For Star Wars: Galaxies, major changes and expansions were:
Changes: January 2004 introduction of the village, allowing becoming a jedi by questing. Expansion: Jump to Lightspeed was released on 27 October 2004. Changes: The Combat upgrade was 27 April 2005 Expansion: Episode III Rage of the Wookiees was released on 5 May 2005 Expansion: Trials of Obi-Wan, was released on 1 November 2005. Changes: The NGE was implemented on 15 November 2005 |

Even The Realm Online is still going strong some twelve years later. I think they charge about $6/mo for an account. I guess if you're a tiny developer or even a one or two person project, it doesn't take a lot of people to keep you surviving forever. |

Edited by: Vabjekf on 16/01/2009 15:57:03 You list lineage 2 but not lineage? It came out in 1998
A few more obscure ones that i know about, all form nexon (for practical purposes ill only list games that have an english speaking release - I will also only include proper mmos, not those mass produced play for free carbon copies, i will also include real release dates, some of these games had lengthy (open) betas, you could have been playing nexustk in 97 for example, but its 'release' was in 98)
Nexus:the kingdom of the winds - 1998 in NA (baram, the original korean version, was released in 1996, and its beta went back a while too, this is one of the original graphical persistent worlds)
Dark Ages - 1999 (this was a great game because it had a player-ran political system ^__^)
Shattered Galaxy - 2001 (first MMORTS)
And then nexon stopped giving us releases of their good mmos, and only give us things like maple story ;_; i wish they would still release outside of korea. They have some really good ones. |

I wouldn't call HG:L an actually mmo, its more like a.. multilayer game with a fancy lobby.
Same with guild wars tbh, instancing does not create a 'persistent' world.
Anyway, most older mmos are still around, its only these rushed new ones once people started jumping onto the bandwagon and making mmos because they were profitable and not because they 'wanted to because they thought they were really cool', that start failing.
I just became horribly depressed over shadowbane, that could have been such a great game ;_;

No, this is actually a very trinitarian theologically correct way of doing this. And I would like to say that before I even looked at his site, Graal is the single best MMORPG there ever was. It was my first and it was PVP. To even get to play this game you had to make it through 30-40 high level characters lined up at the end of the "new player hallway" and any man that knows what "hallway football" is knows what the setup is like, survive, and then get to the city. It was very cutthroat, and got rid of 99.9% of the ***s right off the bat. The next thing I got though once I was in the city was a guild invite. It took me literally 5-6 hours of play to get to this "city beyond the gates". Once I did though people respected you and unless they were your level or lower chances are they wouldn't kill you. Graal did have some bad seeds because they are everywhere, but the general consensus was, if he is lower help him. Was a great game and I made a few friends that I still talk to every once in a while on MSN now, but it also gave me a view on PVP online.
In EVE I go after "red flashy" all the time and if you are neutral in lowsec/0.0 I will let you be, unless you are in a pod...if you let me get your pod you deserve to die because I suck at getting pods. But I will suicide you to protect my resource fields. You might see this as strange, but I have learned a long time ago in smaller MMOs that seeing people die by your hand is not the only form of PVP. While it might be the most fun and instantly gratifying, it certainly is not the only or even best way to kill a character you dislike. Personally I like theft as a form of PvP. To me, getting on someones good side and then robbing them blind is about the pinnacle of PvP. Knowing their assets, and then taking all of them away from your competitor, and then attacking said competitor is the highest form of PVP and should never be looked down upon. This to me is the most challenging and most respected form.
Any monkey with a gun can kill you, but all it takes is a human touch to destroy you.
Write that down.
So, back on topic. I will now look at this list and hopefully Graal is included in it.

Somewhat similar to my own list, which follows. I didn't list any MUDs or BBS door games though even though some of them (TW2002 and BRE/SRE, etc) would count. I'm probably leaving a few out, but these are what I was able to recall the other day when I put it together. While EVE is the only MMO I've played for more than two or three months (some only a few days or weeks), the list below is only for those that I actually played at all (ie, I didn't jump in, wander around for two days and quit).
- Anarchy Online
- World of Warcraft
- Dark Ages of Camelot
- A Tale In The Desert
- Rubies of Eventide
- Planetside
- Shadowbane
- Neocron
- Guild Wars
- The Sims Online (shut up - the GF made me)
- The Matrix Online
- RF Online
- Dungeons & Dragons Online
- Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
- Age of Conan
- Warhammer Online
- Eve Online

Tell me about it. It didn't have a terrible launch, but it just didn't live up to what it could have been. I found it stale rather quickly. Anarchy Online still remains the most horrible experience I ever had, though. To the point that a full month into the game, I simply returned it to Amazon for a full refund, because though you could log in it was unplayable. And by unplayable, I mean "3fps" unplayable. Gave them time to work some things out... took a very long time before it did. And by that point, I had ashed my hands of them.
Age of Conan was not so nearly miserable a launch, but it still bored the crap out of me by some time after level 20. -- Dirk Magnum's Heartfelt Confession |

I'm actually reading up on Graal right now, since you first mentioned it. I find old MMOs (or at least those that passed by me when I was pre-occupied with other games) fascinating, so this is another interesting title along with some of the others suggested in this thread. Thanks for the tip. |

To OP nice site. Although you have included all the EVE Online expantions but not included the release date other expansions for other games. The one that springs to mind is Wrath of the Litch King for World of Warcraft. I think if you going to include expantions you need to do it for all games and not just one. |

Feel free to add any that you like. :)
I'm definitely going to add others when I get around to it, though, unless others beat me to it. My primary goal is to get the main titles added. It'll be easier to follow up with expansions after the list of original releases exists. |

I would like to add to this thread. After looking up "Hallway Football" on google, all of those people that you see on youtube are ***s. All the people you see on that other than english site are ***s and none of them are playing hallway football.
Hallway football is a full contact sport that we played in barracks, or any other area with a long, narrow and straight area of passage. There is no passing in hallway football. Your objective is to carry the ball from one end of the hallway to the other, without being brought down. I.E. normal NFL rules of hands and/or knees on the ground after contact with an opposing player. In true hallway football only you are on the controlling team and everyone else involved is on the defense. Once you are down you lob the ball into the air and whoever catches it is now on the offense and they have to get to the opposite side of the hallway that you were going for. It is brutal, our company commanders have banned it, but we still play and I would like to confirm that I score the most in 8 out 10 games that I am involved with, because it's hard to bring us fat bastards to our knees if we know how to run and can carry 1 or 2 people due to training.

This sounds like the TailGate incident from the military in the 90s, except instead of trying to escape without being ****d, you're trying to escape with a ball. Awesome. -- Dirk Magnum's Heartfelt Confession |

By the way, anyone who wants to contribute to the timeline directly can do so. It's editable by anyone signed in there, so you don't have to run it through me. If it shoudl be there, go ahead and throw it on!

Edited by: Tristin Del''astakhos on 17/01/2009 07:37:12 Dransik has the wrong start date, It came out in the fall of 2000. Ashen Empires which is the sequel to Dransik came out in 2003 under the name Drainsk Iso, which changed it's name 9 months later to Ashen Empires. The original dransik was re-released as Dransik Classic around 2005.
Another game not on your list was called Diaspora, It was an online 2D space game similar to EVE which came out in 1999 and shut down in 2001. It is notable for two reasons.. First it was similar to EVE, and Second, after it shut down, it spawned several clones written from scratch by fans which still exist to this day. -------------------------------------------------- Tristin Del'astakhos - Seeking employment |

I'll have you know that the limit in any post is 4,000 characters, so I could not possibly write 3000 words in a post! Well, I mean, I could... CCP's forums just don't allow it to actually happen. Strangely, I'm not this verbose in conversation. Yes, I know I have a problem. Thanks for pointing it out. :P

Thank you. I really don't have the time or patience to do some uber MMO archival thing. some attempts are already out there, but they all seem to fall a little short of what I'd like. So I might do something like that - using this timeline as a beginning and a guideline for what I do later. Largely, my motivation was just "I can't find this anywhere and I really would like to see it, so I'll do it myself... and hopefully get some help along the way".
It's kind of neat to see how many MMOs have come and gone, though. It's good that some still exist so people like myself who are not in their 40s or did not get a start on MMOs very early on can actually have a little taste. |

MMO is the key word here i dont think many on the list are actually MMO's. The first MMO was around M59 the ones before that i would think do not qualify, especially the MUDS... they were MUDS not MMO's.. |

I don't see how a MUD isn't an MMO. It involves a lot of players interacting with each other in a persistent online world. The only difference between a MUD or Tradewars and later MMOs is the scope of "massively" where concurrency (number logged in at once) is involved.
Meridian 59 most certainly was one of (if not the) first commercial 3D MMO, but it was by no means the first MMO, even if you discounted MUDs. In fact, most of the first MMOs were just MUDs with graphics tacked on. Hell, Neverwinter Nights predates Merdian by five years. --

MUDs are generally to be the first generation of MMOs. The second generation of MMOs would be the first generation of graphical MMOs, more or less. It also depends on how much you care about MUD genealogy. I don't know if some people break them into multiple generations before the graphical MMOs launched.

There's not really even a need to break them up into multiple generations that way, anyway. In a timeline, the simple fact that one doesn't start to appear until a certain year on a timeline itself breaks it up into generations. |

This is true. I was more referring to the arbitrary claim of "MMOs started with X", when MMO is a well-defined term and it's generally accepted that MUDs were the first generation of MMOs. I didn't mean that there was an actual need to break MUDs up into generations =) |
