Alright I was taking a look at the Orca, and realized that it really wouldnt be a difficult ship to aquire. Only about two weeks of training 500 mil which really isn't that bad.
However, I primarily solo with my two accounts (one miner, one mission runner/combat pilot/ hauler). Is there any reason that an Orca would be useful to me? |

Great for hauling and stuff, gives better bonuses than a commandship for mining...
However you may have better isk/hour ratio with two hulks rather than 1 hulk 1 orca.
Orca is only worth more when there are 4-5 hulks, and possibly a hauler to actually haul from the orca to the station.

I got a decent hulk miner, t2 crystals and all that. with my hauler alt sitting in a bc boosting, i take about 12-13 mins to fill a can. after 5 cans alt docks up and starts to haul. it takes freakin forever and i loose alot of boosting skills during this time. orca could sit out there the whole time, swoop in and fill up on 4-5 cans in one run and be back out boosting again. so its a major convenience. of course, saving for the orca so I can do this, hehe.
also, moving from place to place, can fit a rat ship and a hulk in the maint bay and depending on what I feel like doing, use that ship.
my hauler alt also uses cans so its a pain to have to fill each can, then dock and unload each can. I can't wait to get an orca. once i get the funding I will definitely get one.

It's also good for transporting rigged ships around in hi-sec through the ship maintenance bay. Just as a mining support ship, you get more ore mining than with a ship providing bonuses until you reach the number of hulks mentioned. However, if you're using one miner and one hauler, the Orca would allow your hauler to give much bigger bonuses than you'd get flying an industrial, be able to stay out longer without flying in to drop off the ore, be able to carry spare crystals for your mining lasers, and even allow you to store a spare combat ship in the maintenance bay in the event you need to hide your barge. |

Edited by: Vishere Rykane on 19/01/2009 22:09:08 It actually sounds like if I were to grab an Orca I would be better of training my Combat / Hauler main to fly it rather than my current miner. Or hell maybe train them both so they could share the ship.
Ah well, I'll take the long term approach. Currently I'm more focused on getting my Main skilled enough to fly a Maurader efficiently, but after thats done I guess I can focus on the Orca and a second hulk in the process.
*EDIT*
Or maybe by that time i'll be running 3 accounts instead of just two. |

i use mine to basically move my pirating around, has a cov ops hauler and a transport in it so i can easly go into low sec grab all my ships load em up in the orca and move em to wherever i need, also is very very good at helping my 2 hulk pilots mine

You can park your orca pilot at the start of a mission zone with an HAC and a salvage ship in it, go do the mission in the HAC, and then come back, swap out for the salvager and go salvage the mission.
You can also use the orca to support long-range exploration stuff, though being in a small gang would likely be more effective than a two "man" job of it and it's more of a 0.0 thing than a high-sec one due to the better ability to aquire what you need.
Beyond that, yeah, super-hauler for mining, mini-freighter for hauling, and so on.
I'd say mission running but even with 5 T2 mediums and a "nano" speed of only around 300m/s the ship'd be too slow for anything over L3, probably even many of them, missions. |

Not nearly worth it like a loaded freighter, too large for the bcs to gank. Adding a DCU gives you the ehp of a freighter, worth loosing that expander for imo, add an invul, couple em/thr resists and a large booster and you're tougher to kill than a freighter. |

So, even if you pack your mission boat in it will be slightly safer than a freighter for moving around, assuming you actually fly ofc.
You misunderstand. He is talking about using it as a staging ship with a gank brutix plus several gank fit cruisers and destroyers in the main bay. Flashy reds then use them to strike at targets deep in empire without having to risk getting pointed by a player on the way in so the faction navy can pwn them as pods instawarp. |

Can tank spawns in belts. Can assist mining. Can hold a hell of a lot of ore.
Bit of a waste of time for completely solo, although being able to stuff rigged ships in the maintenance bay is pretty handy. -- 249km locking? |

Did you have an alt shoot something to get flashy red? Concord only responds to aggression not sec status so when I said flashy red I really mean a -5 not someone with a gcc. Now the faction navy will show up but they are slow to lock and fire plus they have no point and the uber webber they use actually boosts you into warp.

I use mine for hisec mission looting/salvaging. Grab all the wrecks in the mission space, loot them, then take out the salvagecane and salvage the wrecks. Done. Very efficient.

Im also wondering if its really worth getting, feels like it cargo space for ore is kinda small to be effective. |

Heh yeah he has to immediatly start warping between safespots once he enters a ship to keep from getting toasted but its bunches easier than trying to ninja in the ships all the way from low sec. |

reason to own the orca: One of the coolest looking ships in the game. The fact that it is a mini-freighter and a mining booster amongest other things are just icing on the cake to the pure awesome of the orca. I wish I could fly them but since the only leadership skill I have is leadership (0) It will take some time.
The other reasons are the fact that it has a hanger bay for stowing ships gives the orca a broad base of roles, most of them platform of course but its the choice in the type of platform thats important.

Since I came back in November, any time I've tried to mine in a regular belt without having a dedicated hauler, someone has tried to flip my cans. With two accounts, I don't even bother having them both mine unless it's in a mission deadspace like Recon 1. |

The Corp hangar doesn't show up on scans and won't ever drop if you're suicide ganked, it's the ultimate in low m3 secure high-sec haulage.
BPOs? Wut BPOs? I has no BPOs in mah cargo bayz!
That, and hauling rigged ships in high sec. |

-mobile ship fortress -biggest hauler (great replacement for that hauler account you use) -mining gang bonuses -rigged ship trader? or trader in general -ganker, with pirate friends -afk drone miner (sloooooooooooooooooooooooow) -looks awesome, and more like a freighter than freighter does. Just look at modern day cargo ships and compare the two! -salvager helper person thingy for missions, however the tractor range might not be worth it for missions that involve lots of acceleration gates at a distance.
Personally I'm going to use it to sit in mining ops and do a lazy job. Also going to use it as my mobile base carrying around a bunch of disposible rifters for when I get bored. Even if some of the above doesn't apply to you, it'll be worth getting one to replace that nasty small hauler alt you use, but to use it to maximum efficiency you'll need to train a lot of skills in Leadership which in my case is about 120 days for me after being able to fly it.
Ooooh its a good ship indeed, when skilled for. |
