Has anyone tried running Eve on a Netbook, like the Acer Aspire One? And if so any luck, what have you been able to do and where do you run into problems.. (beyond screen size) Just curious about the performance, and how it handles.

my eee1000h with an extra gig of ram runs classic just fine, 30fps in station, ~20 or so in space (non combat, i never botherd to try and see how it worked in combat)
Though since they are removing classic im not sure if it will run premium-lite or not, i suspect it wont because its technically not supposed to be able to run classic, but somehow it does.

I have an Acer Aspire One. I replaced the 512MB stick under the motherboard with a 1GB stick (incredible pain in the ass, but possible to do with patience), so it now has 1.5 GB of RAM. It does run Eve (classic mode only), but it's really not what you'd want as your primary gaming system. It's certainly enough to log in to change skills and do chat and market stuff (though the low resolution does hurt some for that as you can't see very much at once), but once in space, the performance suffers badly.
It's okay for going a few jumps to pick up skills or items, and probably would work well enough for mining (I'm a high-sec mission runner, haven't gotten into mining), but I would avoid trying to do any combat. I'm at work now and can't give hard framerate numbers, but I would say easily under 20 FPS when there's anything else on the screen besides your own ship.
I tried turning off every graphics item in the game I could find, even tried knocking it down to 16-bit color. Turns out 16-bit didn't seem to help much, but turning off all the extras (turrets, engine trails, drones, etc.) did help some. Still not enough that I would want to do any combat that could be remotely risky, but again probably enough for high-sec mining/transport.
Hope that helps. |

"A netbook is a light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient, highly portable laptop that achieves these parameters by offering a smaller form, fewer features, less processing power and reduced ability to run resource-intensive operating systems." -from Wikipedia
The original netbook was the Asus EEE PC, but since it was released in 2007, many other companies have released similar computers, including the Acer Aspire One. Some come with Windows (either XP or Vista), and some come with a custom version of Linux as the OS.

Eve on my Asus EEE1000-H
Booting Empyrean Age Splash Station Space Size Comparison To And Old 3.5" Diskette
Eve classic runs as smooth as ever with one of these in it's stock setup, no issues with the chipset using shared memory. More than playable in station >50FPS and more than playable in space >40FPS.
In the end, for a little bit of fun I decided to overclock mine, ended up with the processor up from 1.6GHz to 2GHz, with no heat issues, and replaced the 1GB stick of RAM for a 2GB stick.
Runs like a dream, no real performance issues and no real trouble with screen size other than the wallet information being a little under the bottom border on the character selection screen.

Im playing from my Aspire One. It can handle ratting and missions. I wouldnt engage in fighting if theres more than 15-20 ships on grid tough.
Im using the classic version with all visuals disabled. |

my blackberry is basically a tiny computer ^_^
After i got an EEE i decided it still wasnt small enough.
by the way the eee 1000h is actually a little bigger than most netbooks, the other eees as well as the spire one i think are even smaller (8 inch screen instead of 10, and the whole thing is smaller also).
I did not get one of those because the keyboards were just too small for me, i can type fine on my 1000h though

No, its a tiny computer that happens to also let you make phone calls on it - an action i rarely use it for.
I can even post on these forums with it ^_^ |

I would wait on buying any new netbooks until they start shipping the new ones built on the recently announce Nvidia Ion platform:
http://www.dailytech.com/NVIDIA+Unveils+Ion+Platform/article13723.htm
The netbooks that use the Ion integrated Intel Atom CPU and a Nvidia 9400M GPU should be able to play Eve and other games quite well. It was shown at CES running Call of Duty 4 and 1080p HD video files.

I just sold my old Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop and plan to replace it with one of the Nvidia Ion platform netbooks when they hit the market.

Edited by: eladi on 25/01/2009 01:11:04 Edited by: eladi on 25/01/2009 01:05:44 Afther some experiments whit a lite version of xp (who could not run eve online deu having no suport for directX) I tought I go all crazy and install VISTA HOME BASIC on my [Acer one 110]
Installation took a little while (about a hour) and nearly 7gb of the 8GB SSD harddrive was full but sofar so good. hitting the limmeds of the harddrive I conected a external disk (320gb) and started installing Eve online.
this little notebook cost around 230,- Euro ( can be cheaper if orderd in Uk or US or other Finance hit country's) Add 15,- Euro for a 1gb memory module and take the time to add it ( its fairly easy but you will have to disasamble the entire notebook)
And you have a fine machine that can run eve fine. (havent tryd prem.grapics yet)
My next tryout will be to install Eve on one of the buildin SD slots (will use a 8gb highspeed SD card), That would alouw for removing the ext.drive saving power when being mobile.
Curently using my HTC 4350 as modem and a ext disk I can go to some random place and run eve for about 45m-1hour bevore running out of power.
This should aswer if its useable. Ofcource a faster version whit more memory and own real harddrive would be better but also more expencive.
some tought, IF CCP removes shader 2 suport at the end of this year a current model netbook wont be able to run eve anymore, this deu the intel 945 chipset/videochip being used. (shader2)

it works fine (I can do everything I want to in station and even mine/rat a bit), but I second the people saying wait for the ion platform netbooks to come out. The Intel integrated graphics are terrible.

I have a Dell Mini 9 now and I guess I should have a crack at putting EVE onto it soon ...
The usual Atom chip, 1GB RAM and a 16GB SSD with XP installed for OS. I don't know how well it'll work with the SSD so I might try installing onto an external drive first. |

The SSd should run fine, the old 8gb ssd acer used is getting a 4,8 on my vista score. the intel fixed video memory size is what makes running games hard. that 16bg ssd and xp combo will be fine for Eve.

Well thats done, Eve online running from a normal camera SD card
I could not install it directly to the SD card , everytime it failed but a simple copy/past of the eve directly works fine.

I got the classic client to run on a eee pc 701.
My eee is upgraded to 1Gb ram and overclocked to 800mhz. Eve just about runs but I wouldn't dare use it for anything more than changing skills from the office

Edited by: Finraer on 25/01/2009 18:50:11 Runs ok on my Asus Eee901 for missions, production, exploration, mining and skill changing.
Only problem I have faced is the screensize is just a little too small to see the bottom of the in-station menu (which makes trying to open the corp hangar an interesting challenge) - I am betting that's a resolution issue and easily fixed but I can't be bothered to fix it since I am only skill-training these days.
