Ok just to dispel any OMG ISK BUYER! I dont need isk.
Why doesn't ccp sell isk? Lots of people obviously have an interest in doing it. Not to mention they can just use the isk they take from the isk sellers now.

Community Cake Productions, now that would be a good business name.
as for money -> isk, well gtcs seem to be rather good at that.

GTCS. If they sold isk directly it could mean legal implications. I mean, Everything in the server is owned by CCP, how can they charge you to obtain something that will still be theres after the money is exchanged.

lol, then they need to give EVE away or get sued? It's called a service. Anyways selling isk by CCP would just be introducing isk artificially into the system and of course that would cause isk issues. Selling GTCs is just the transfer of isk inbetween active players so it doesn't really inflate/deflate the economy. _______________
Chances are I'm better then you, and I know it. Yes, I AM egocentric when it comes to this game, but if I wanted to care about others I wouldn't be playing EVE now would I. |

In the case of a sub, then you are paying for access to the game. Paying for something in the game is completely different than paying for access to the game. This especially rings true with isk, though what you said is also a big reason for CCP selling isk directly never happening.

If you read the EULA, you would know that CCP still owns everything in the game (every ISK, every ship, every everything), if they would sell it to the people are providing it to it could cause legal implications.
The GTC system is fine right now. |

It's actually rather simple. If CCP sells ISK directly, they can't really claim selling ISK is wrong. If they can't claim selling ISK is wrong, they can't really punish ISK sellers (I'm sure many will scream "EULA!" but this would effectively make the EULA legally unenforcable). If they can't effectively punish ISK sellers then we'd all be spammed to death.
Plus at the moment it tends to make accountants cry, trying to figure out what the hell "virtual goods" falls under in the ledger. |

the EULA doesn't need to be legally enforceable. They can do what ever they want! It's their server, software, stuff. They can ban ppl for no reason at all if they wanted. The EULA doesn't give nearly as much power as people think.
And it certainly does need to be enforceable, atleast if they want it to hold up in court.

Yes but the problem is that with the Subscription you are making the money yourself and are only paying in for the ISK in your time. In a sense by playing EvE you are being paid in funny money.
If it was purchased directly from CCP then there would be an exchange rate, the ISK would then a real world value, thus CCP would then be paying you with real money.
This opens up both the players and CCP to all kinds of possible legal problems. The theft and piracy could be charged to the player committing the act as real life petty theft. It would open the door to players having to pay real life income tax on the money/assets that they make as well.
If CCP sold ISK for real money it would be no different the the gift cards that retailers sell you. As such it the ISK and things bought with it could be subject to the same consumer protection laws.
The portrait changing feature has no in game effects other than the portrait changing so it is really just a service.
While IANAL, these potential legal issues are more than enough for me to not want CCP selling ISK, regardless of the in game economic and balance problems of having a potentially unlimited supply of ISK. CCP selling ISK would give players like that army person last year that had is ISK stolen or was scammed by a player (I don't remember the details, but these threats come up often enough) some validation for his potential lawsuit.

Why not? Just make a quick statement: buying isk via the official CCP website is ok but using third party sites is not. Simple. I'm pretty sure that is what SOE does with EQ2, ie you can buy gold from station exchange but not from third party sites. I think the legal implications mentioned above are the main reason companies do not sell isk/gold for RL cash. RMT has gigantic cash flow, I'm surprised more companies haven't tried to capitalize on it. |

No, they don't.
There is no new ISK introduced when a GTC changes hands. The total amount if ISK in game is unchanged (same with the illegal isk sellers).
If CCP would introduce isk selling, they would inject a potentially large amount of ISK into Eve and that could upset the economy greatly. In the long run it would only increase inflation, the death of all mmo-economy.
There are good reasons why CCP isn't selling any isk. Allowing things like GTC to be exchanged for isk is a completely different mechanism. And actually it is quite a clever way to not upset the Eve economy and still allow people to have their precious isk.

Oh but CCP does sell ISK for real money. I mean, you pay them and in return they grant you access to the server, therefore giving you the chance to get ISK. |

That is only true in a very abstract sense.
When people buy ISK using GTC, they create a demand for people who want to buy GTCs to farm ISK, so the GTC system does increase the ISK amount in the game indirectly.
So in reality, the devaluative effect on ISK exists with GTCs - and not only in the economical sense, but much more in the subjective value given to ISK by players ("I lost 80m in that ship loss? no problem, I'll just go sell a GTC").
