Which TV series and movies you like(d)?

I will mention though, as I've mentioned before ... that Starship Troopers is directed by Paul Verhoeven. To get the movie, look at some of the other stuff he's done and you'll see where it's coming from. Of course ... he only did the first one. The rest are low budget knock offs. Although the second one ... originally made for Show Time, is somewhat interesting, with the third apparently (I've not seen it) as a Direct to DVD movie. Anyway - the problem with Starship Troopers is that people don't look at it the same way they did Robocop. Robocop was so over the top that people got the movie. Starship Troopers was just standard enough that people expected it to be a normal movie - when it isn't. Actually, the comment about it being a space age shoot'em up couldn't be more wrong. What you need to realize is that what the guy was doing was portraying the Earth Government as a Facist State. He said so - and he said that the government portrayed by Heinlein was the facist state he was portraying. So, there's actually a good bit of intellect behind the movie and the way it is presented. Now none of this means I agree with Verhoeven or any of the other critics of the book - it just means I understand where the director was coming from. The guy was a child in Holland during WWII and has said that the scenes in the movie of the starships breaking up came from his personally witnessing the death of British Bombers in the night sky. So, I find the movie interesting, not for what it isn't - I'd have preferred they'd CGI'd the Powered Armor the way they CGI'd the bugs - but for what it is. That ... and there's so little actual military Sci Fi out there ... I'll take what I can get.

Due for a remake soon too apparently. Charlie Jade - South African tv series from a couple of years ago. Private investigator in Bladerunner style parallel universe type thing. Definitely worth a look, it's a bit more adult oriented than most sci-fi tv shows and the better for it.

So, there's actually a good bit of intellect behind the movie and the way it is presented. intellect yes, but he really didnt get what made the book so great, sadly. as it stands I enjoyed the film, but I rate the book among my top 10. not least because SOME of the concepts in the book I fully agree with [ and i absolutely love the powered armor :) ] Serenity/firefly are top notch, and i say this every time, WTF were those mongs thinking when they cancelled firefly?! Given some of the utter dross they allow to run for 10 years they still felt that something witty, imaginative, and close enough to believeable reality to actually appeal to a wide audience deserved to be driven down the pan?! eesh. oh yeah, Starship troopers 2 OMFG thats the worst film ive ever had the misfortune to pay to rent. its hours and hours i wish i could have back (not just the time watching the film, but the crippling flashbacks and post traumatic stress ive been suffering ever since. :D )

That's pretty much how I felt about them. Of course - another aspect of Starship Troopers I didn't mention was the special effects. That's one of the things I really like about expensive Sci Fi, is good special effects. Of course - they always get the distances wrong. Ever try to fight anything visually in EVE, without the over view? That's why all those ships and men are always crammed so close together in the movies - so you can see them. Every war movie ever made has had the intervals wrong. Now ST2 ... was not an expensive film ... I guess I'd have to watch it again to remember why I liked it. Something about the complexities of the plot ... Now that I could watch ... as I bought the DVD ... it was cheap.

On the contrary, I think he understood it perfectly. He just didn't like it much. The focus on the gadgets is part of what he didn't like, I suppose. Which I guess if you're a fan of the book makes him an odd choice for director It's like Judge Dredd. People moaned because they didn't make that exactly like the comic book... but nobody'd really want to make that movie and it'd have very limited appeal. "Fascist shoots people for two hours" isn't very action hero

It's an awesome movie, and aside from the lack of power armor really gets the feel of the book. I should note that I saw the movie first, so that could be some of the problem with people's expectations. The best part about the second movie is how it ends. That too catches the Heinlein feel of it. Most of the stuff before that is crap, especially the blond's boobies (please get a refund from your surgeon). But that ending is made of win and is the only thing that can redeem the film. I haven't seen 3 yet, but I want to just for the potential lulz.
