Keeping old website and forum URLs working is absolutely essential, even if they're just backend redirects to the new page. There are loads of cases where websites have linked to something on the EVE website or forum and those links are part of what brings people to EVE. I know in my columna t massively.com I link to the forum on occasion and some forum threads are very high on google (e.g. google for EVE Triage). I just wanted to stress that. |

Nice, maybe finally the site will look more alive on the first page as it is on the forums. Sometimes there are absolutely no changes on the main page for weeks. Although this doesn't always bother me, a more... web 2.0 approach wouldn't hurt :P |

While you're at it, PLEASE : * enable some form of persistant logged-in status (NOT make me push "log in" link since it's auto-logging-in-anyway) * stop losing my session, ffs ! * add user options to remove the chronicles images from the right * add user options to move the left-hand menu to the top or bottom

Another note to the wishlist:
* A OP sign on the OP of the thread your in, so eachtime he is postin in his own thread there will be a sign of some sort around his name/picture. MMORPG.COM has this, and its a surprisingly neat feuture . Especially for long threads.

Are you planning to restore broken item database links too? For two years I have been linking items from my blog to the item database, and since the wiki went online those links are all dead.
I am sure I am not the only one with this issue, so I would like to know if you have anything planned to at least put a page up saying the item database has moved? Currently you just get a very pretty page not found message.
Example: Hacking (skill)
If this had to be the only issue I am allowed to raise in 2009, this would be it!

The item database is alas gone, replaced by the incredibly sexy wiki. However I will look at putting a page up thats a little bit more gentle than a 404. Menu structure changes will also help with this I think.
Cheers ;)

If you have full control of your site template Aeon (so you could include some JS) then I have some JS that would probably fix those links for you. Drop me a mail in game.
@Caps you can catch the 404, parse the request URL and with a DB lookup redirect to the appropriate wiki page - just use the right header and it'll update the search engines also. |

Main comment subsites should always have a link back to the main eve-online.com site, just to make all our lives easy this link should always be in the same location on all sites so people will not get stuck on a sub site.
Other then that, cool it can't really go bad so far you guys have made major improvements to the site on several occasions so I am looking forward to seeing how great the websites are going to turn out. ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. Excellent, looking forward to these changes.
CCP has started using YouTube/Facebook for online marketing. But you have left out the most important and cheapest form of building a web presence: SEO and Link Building.
Yes, I have reviewed the site and links. Someone has done a real basic job, but it could be much, much better.
Please focus on this. You are loosing an estimated 10,000 - 30,000 extra subscribers per year. Subscribers that you would have gotten at a near-zero cost, certainly much cheaper than TV ads...!
Can I urge you, in the interests of best practice web development, to consider search engine optimization as one of the key objectives to meet for the new website?
The eve-online website has a Google PageRank of 7. Not many sites have this kind of PageRank...let's exploit it.
More generic phrases that you should be aiming to rank for internationally (top 5 ranking) on Google.com should include:
- MMO - Online Game - Multi-player game - Space Game - Space MMO - Sci-fi Game - Spaceship Game - Or just "Game".
Not just the obvious target ones like "Science Fiction Space MMO" etc etc. (Above list is an example only. Proper keyword research should be carried out.)
Please ensure all old URLs are 301 permanently redirected 1-1 to their new version. Don't redirect using 302. This can be done in the .htaccess file.
Some additional initiatives too look at are global RSS syndication of all CCP content (push RSS, ie. go and submit the feeds to the top 100 aggregators) as well as some more advanced on-page search optimisation initiatives such as tag clouds (popular search cloud on a per website-category level). |

So, with all the glorious changes to the eve-online.com coming in the near/distant future... will ANY of it be viewable in-game??? Seriously, the in game browser is SO limited, it really does stall a LOT of 3rd party development. It shouldn't be THAT hard to use one of the simple open source web renderers to get at least BASIC web page support in game. At the very least, you should be able to view the games own website from the in-game browser. This inability, at least to me, would just be embarrassing... |

When you rework the forums can you make the title of the pages actually reflect the content of the page when you bookmark them.
ie EO Forum : New Blog IĈm in your websites and other such memes
Instead of : EVE Online EVE Insider Forums EVE Information Portal New Blog IĈm in your websites and other such memes
It would save on a hell of a lot of editing when trying to make bookmarks of useful posts.
Or better still bring the forums up to date with Subscriptions and PMs. |

EVE-Search is great because the current Forums don't have any kind of search functionality at all and most if not all features a modern Forum Software usually has are missing.
Breaking compatibility with EVE-Search but getting a "State-of-the-Art" Forum sure sounds OK to me. The forum can't be kept in a rudimantary state forever because of an external site.
CCP webdevs adding functionality step by step to the current forum doesn't seem like a good idea.
To CCP : Will there be a State-of-the-art (like VBulletin) forum upgrade or the "Selfmade" approach ?

Good stuff.
While you're at it it'd be nice if you could improve both the EVE sides and the ingame browsers so they're compatible with eachother.
As fas as I can tell the biggest problem is that the ingame browser doesn't understand tables. So if you open evelopedia or the forum or something, it goes nuts.

What I want in the revamped web page.
1. A forum search function that works, where I can search for specific players, corporations/alliances, keywords, items and generic content by category and date.
2. We need corp and alliance management and communication tools. The management of a forum can be very difficult. As people come and go from the corp/alliance we have to constantly update our forums. It is also a huge security risk, as it is very easy for spies to get access and people hack player forums. Every corp should have some kind of forum that is secure and has a public and private presence. We were promised something along these lines in the fanfest presentation. Sounds like this has degenerated into a web page update. One of the primary reason a lot of organizations collapse in EvE is that the infrastructure is just too damn hard to manage for players. They can last a few months, but people burn out. Its not a skillpoint limit that makes most organizations in EvE the size they are, its the ability to manage them.
3. Market/Industry pages need to be useful. CCP has made an extremely complex market and industry. The web tools needed to manage that are primative. Accurate descriptions of how things work can only be found from players, who learned through trial and error. There is no authoritative source, just getting the item database listed accurately has taken forever. When CCP changes a mechanic, we only find out after the fact in some cases. To make sure something works, I might have to spend 3 hours on SISI verifying the setup. How things work should be very clearly articulated by CCP, and they should be KEPT UP TO DATE. We should also be able to download a spread sheet on every item. The biggest time sink in industry is keeping information on items up to date, and this is done primarily out of game with spread sheets. |

Edited by: Bom Bommer on 03/02/2009 22:05:09 Good news but... No Flash please !
Seriously, Flash is nice for animations and such but... * It messes up navigation (no backward/forward standard support from our browser) * It messes up bookmarking * I use a flash-blocking add-in because of those stupid blinking/singing/flashy ads made with flash we have everywhere, and because of the huge load on the system when we have ten to twenty tabs full of flash content opened in the browser. Sure, I can reactivate every Flash frame with a single click but, hell, it's boring, especially when a site relies on multiple such frames and I have to reload them every time.
No Flash please. Please.....
PS : Same goes for Silverlight, Apollo, or whatever any fancy new technology that breaks the web model. PPS : Light and fast is better than fancy and sexy. ;) |

It's interesting because this is exactly what I did for my current employer and while it is no easy task, it's well worth the effort. We joined 2 sites into one new site while maintaining all the data as well as creating a custom CMS to manage the site. Now we are working on making the site more '2.0' ( I hate that term ) by adding the jquery library to the site. I highly recommend it as it is quite robust and extremely easy to work with. How this will affect the IGB, no idea...but I'm eager to see the your work!!

As fas as I can tell the biggest problem is that the ingame browser doesn't understand tables. So if you open evelopedia or the forum or something, it goes nuts.
I always found it strange that the urls always had "ingameboard" in them, yet, never worked IN GAME. Honestly, it would be incredible if we could actually visit the forums from inside the game. Are there any plans to update the in game web browser to be more standards compliant to go with the new standards compliant site? |

Edited by: Phantom Slave on 19/02/2009 17:34:47 I see some changes have come to the website. My thoughts so far:
All the menus on the left were closed for me after clicking the Forum section, I had to re-open them all. When I click the Forums or Dev Blog menu, I want it to go to that place, like it did before. Not open another menu where I now have to click something else. It's not intuitive, it's annoying.
All in all I'm not liking the way the website is behaving today. Slow load times of up to 2-3 minutes of load time, but it could just be a bad connection between me and the server. The menu glides up/down when I click the section. I want it to open instantly, I don't like clicking and having to wait. The website is already taking forever to load, I don't want to sit here staring at a blank screen for 2 minutes then have to wait even longer because I have to open a menu, then a sub menu, then click a link. Nothing digs under my skin like waiting for an application to do some fancy crap like slide a menu out of the way.
*edit* Oh and for some reason Apostrophes are not showing up, instead being replaced by some weird characters and symbols. Just an FYI.

Also echoing this. This is the only change I've had trouble with so far. I do note that it at least keeps menu items expanded once I've started navigating, but since the terms are less than helpful, expanding them out as a default would be good.
EVE Insider - what does that mean? How would anyone know the forums are under this? Or bug reporting? Previously I just saw 'oh yes, under EVE Insider which I barely noticed, there's this Forums link'. Now I have to know to expand EVE Insider & Forums to actually get to where I want to go.

That said, there shouldn't be anything in this batch of changes that you will have to worry about
