You might want to run missions for multiple factions before you make that statement.
In over 2 Years Missionrunning i did many Missions against many Factions
Highest Orbit Ranges, Pirate Factions: EOM BS-50km Gurista BS-50km Serpentis BS-51km Sansha BS-49km Angel BS-36km Drone BS-40km
I don't know the Amarr-, Caldari-, Minmatar-and Gallente Orbitranges cause i decline that Missions, sy. |

Either your Sansha numbers are off or I kill things way too fast. They start to go into orbit around 60km and 'even out' the range around 56km, I am not sitting still tho (orbiting acceleration gate or jump-in beacon).. and usually I go slightly faster than them so it might affect their range.
Still, I'm stuck with alot of Sansha-ships at 55-60km. Now, that's no problem with the 66km Golem fits. I wanted to see about the AB on Golem so threw together something quick in EFT and seems, with t1 rigs and a +3% velocity implant the range is ~62km. Throw in t2 rigs, +5% and you're above 67. That'll cover the Sanshas at least.
I don't do faction missions either. |

Before calling other tards, you might want to check what's posted..
Originally by: Billy Merc nothing really wrong with that...but people will still flame your for it and say crap about "mixing" weapons ect.
One major reason people don't mix weapon types is because of range-matters. Long range weapons don't do much damage, short range weapons don't hit far. If you combine them, you will do half-assed damage at all ranges. Most prefer to optimize either.
In that sense the BS orbit range is very much what you want to know. If you can get all short range weapons and still hit crap non-stop, there's no reason to use long range weaponry. If you need long-range weaponry to hit things, then there's no reason to use short range ones. If you mix them both, you are wasting alot of time doing poor damage. Not to mention your alpha and volley at longer range will be really poor, which has a big impact as well.
For non-missiles you also have to factor in optimal range, falloff, etc. There's alot of reasons people don't mix weapon types. |

Thats it. The posted orbiting ranges are the numbers when you stand still and they orbit you with their normal speed. If you move many NPCs pulses their ABs or fly after you, that has massive affect on the distance btw them and you.
U have 2 know ur enemy: I wrote down orbiting ranges and tactics for all missions i made to complete them in the fastest time...when i have to trigger first, when i have to pull, when i have to move, which NPC i have to shoot first, when i have to change Ammo etc. My Torprange is 53km and i can kill all NPCs without approaching them.

I figure as much, but then again, one of the first lessons I got as a little nublet in EVE was "never sit still, you take more damage that way". Orbiting a jump-in beacon at 500-1000m, or the acceleration gate leading to next level (killing while moving there, killing while orbiting it) makes you both save time, and take less damage.
There's no reason to sit still. If it's necessary to sit still to make the torp Golem work.. that's pretty damn crap poo tbh. Let me guess, people fit an extra amp in the low, or run the low-damage-dual-small-booster perma-setups to make that work? My CNR has more shield than the Golem, with 3 rig slots and isn't "mandatory" to fit +range rigs, so I can free those up for +dmg and +cap rigs. The Golem thus have lower shields AND worse cap than the CNR. If it doesn't run an Amp, it also has worse +rep from booster vs the CNR.
Yuck. Shouldn't it be sensible to run something like 3 BCU, Cap Regen / Target Painter, 100mn AB, 3 active hardener.. then the 4th a 2nd TP, Sensor Booster or 4th hardener, anything but an Amp? / launchers + whatever?
Not trying to sound negative here, I'm really trying to find a reason to fly the Golem, but it just looks damn limited/crap on paper. Rig slots has no options, Amp is necessary since you have low buffer and have to sit still, either that or ignore missions with NPC's that spawn further away. AB necessary. So what's the point?
The cruise CNR let's you move while firing, no AB needed, optional rig slots, range is never an issue, no TP needed. Bigger buffer tank. Uhm, am I missing something? Yah I know the benefit from Marauders, I fly Paladin as you know, as well as can compare it to the Nightmare. And I fly the CNR. The Paladin is a viable choice to the Nightmare, the Golem just looks worse overall compared to a CNR? Unless you purely run Damsel in Distress or something.

Sy m8, you're not knowing what you're talking about. 1. There is no Reason to move if you reached your target(Acc-Gate for Example) and have enough tank. 2. My fit has 4 BCUs, Torplaunchers and 1-2TPs(depends on mission)+ a sufficient tank. 3. With Torps you need the 2 Rangerigs on the CNR, so you have 1 Rig lft for a CCC--> CNR+CCC=22,5 Cap/s Golem without Rigs=25,4 Cap/s As you see the Golem has more Cap. 3. With Torps you will have less tank on the CNR than on the Golem, Shield-HP does'nt matter-we're not talking about PvP and buffertanks. With the 2 Midslots and the 37,5% Boostbonus the Golem has ~the same tank as a Nighthawk
Ohh you are comparing a Cruise Missile-CNR with a Torp-Golem? The OK, take Cruise they are much more comfortable for the price of lesser Killspeed. But then Compare a Cruise-Golem with a Cruise-CNR. And that was done 1721times in this and the other Threads. And.. 4. Since QR even a Cruise Missileboat needs a TP to make really good Damage, especially the CNR without the Explovelo Bonus.

Use a cruise CNR if you don't want to ever think about how you do missions. Alot of people still use it because it is freakin easy to use, not because it is the fastest.
Use a torp golem for high efficiency, however it requires that you have very high missile skills and know exactly what you are doing in missions... order of targets, range to targets, keeping an eye on the painter cycle time vs. torp cycle time.
I myself don't use AB on the golem. I fire T1 torps at ~43km and my javalin hits out to 63km. I pull aggro with the target painter. Most rats orbit under 40km which is where I want them dead anyways for the tractor beams.
I run a max skilled tachyon paladin alt along side my golem most the time, still the golem cuts down BC, BS like knife through butter.
I didn't think the golem was so hot either when I first looked at it on paper before I could fly it. Stop trying to compare them with made up scenarios in your mind and just go out and try one out.

golem is superion in every way. with sieges II, 2 TP and range rigs you still have enough cap and tank for every mission AND you can instapop cruisers and BC.

I rofled at this comment. But he has a point.
I would take a look at your cap/tanking skills, and whats in your mids and lows too. Even when I was in a raven way back when I never had to orbit anything. (And I had crap skills too.)
First thing I'd look at is that AB you keep talking about.
Honestly, I've never seen one on good mission setups, and I can see why. It seems to be causing you problems.

You've got a billion isk booster but won't shell out 150m for T2 rigs?
When I found that some torps (~1/4) were not hitting serps orbiting at 38km, I realized T2 rigs are a must have. Good thing they're cheap.

No, I mean 150m for both. Granted that's rounded down from the 16x mil I paid back then. Have they really risen in price that much? Did you ever bother to check?
How can you be cheap when you have a ridiculously expensive booster?

GTFO, I rather watch grass grow than to watch nighthawk nibble at BS rats...and I fly nighthawk with CS V. Nighthawk is for "pu$$y" missioners who are always worried about their tank. :-)

posting sliced'n'spliced and edited chat logs is generally FAIL. this post was full of fail and an incomprehensible mess to begin with. after it was cleaned by the mods, it became even less comprehensible.
but i'm kind today, so here is a new bone for you to chew on:
torp CNR: 7x T2 siege launchers 4x CN BCS 2x PWNAGE painters 2x Hydraulic Bay Thrusters + 1x Rocket Fuel Cache Partition rigs + a viable tank for any lvl4
with 'All level V' profile and no drones: javelins - 978 dps / 5393 alpha (68km) rage - 1390 dps / 7670 alpha (40km) CN ammo - 1248 dps / 6884 alpha (45km) T1 ammo - 1086 dps / 5992 alpha (45km)
and please, remember how that discussion in chat got even started:
Quote: namelessclone01 > golem is less dps than a raven with the same weapons (cruise or torps). need i say more? Crusty Mustaddddd > yes, explain how youre getting that implication namelessclone01 > correction: than a CNR ...
it was ONLY and exclusively about dps values, nothing more. some would call it paper-dps. that's why i didn't want to discuss any other factors in comparing the ships. that's why your attempt to make our chat discussion into a full-blown 'Golem vs CNR' forum post (without asking me first) was even more FAIL.

You mind sharing your 'viable' tank for any lvl 4? Along with the stats of said tank. I would love to see this as you are using 2x TPs and 4x CN BCS. And can you tank the aggro of a full stage of any lvl 4 mission without ever needing to warp out? If so, then you must have some really expensive mods on that ship of yours.

Idd like to see this viable tank too. It has to be full crystal set + super expensive mods.
Even after that I dont think I would call it a comfortable tank. I don't like to run missions with a constant sweat on my forehead. Some level of insurance is needed that my tank will hold in most situations. |

Edited by: Disco Flint on 06/02/2009 22:42:01 There ya go, viable torp CNR:
Is a torp golem better in some points? Yes, probably. With a 2nd painter & painter bonus and with the higher alpha it will pop cruisers easier. But let's face it, unless it's a mission that swarms you with cruisers, that's what your drones are there for. Torp Golem will be cheaper to fit no doubt, but who cares, if you fly either a golem or a CNR you shouldn't turn every isk twice anyway. This setup is for winners, not whiners. Whiners fly glorified salvage tugs. I kid, the Golem is a fine ship as well.
Comments about the fit: - The T2 SMC isn't really needed, a T1 or anything else (another range rig if you desire) will do just fine, cap lasts for 4:30 or something without. - Add some T2 Hammerheads into the mix and you're blitzing through missions with over 1k dps at 60'ish k - 650 dps tanked for 5 mins against EM/Therm rats and 14k shield HP is plenty of tank. No crystal implants needed.

- With an extra salvage hurricane I'm always faster as long as I dont have to take more than 2 jumps from agent to mission - Your speed always matters, more transversal = less hits & lower quality hits. Yes, it matters and is noticable even on BS. If you're at 0 at the next acc gate, you can at least circle it at 500. If you have enough tank to tank while sitting still your ship is clearly not ganky enough. - Drone skills, learn them - If you doubt the buffer you have never gank-tanked - cba to read his other comments, I only stumbled across your post by accident.

Now I didn't read through this entire thread because most people probably said the same thing. They are always full of the Raven gets a RoF bonus but the Golem gets a Target Painter bonus! Now that's all fine and dandy but the Golem has another AMAZING bonus: 5% bonus to cruise missile and torpedo explosion velocity per level.
Holy crap?! Suppose you're using Javelin Torpedoes. The explosion velocity goes from 106.5 to 133.1. You will anhihilate BS's, BC's, and cruisers with them, quicker than cruise missiles. Stick on two rigs to increase the torps range and you can hit 60km's (well 55ish because they never hit their full distance)
Anyway here's a fit but a tad expensive because it uses Caldari Navy Invulns:
4x Siege Missile Launcher II's (Javelin Torps) 2x Tractor Beams 1x Salvager
1x X-Large Shield Booster II 3x Dread Guristas Invulnerability Field 1x Shield Boost Amplifier 1x Cap Recharger II (feel free to change this out for whatever) 1x Target Painter II
3x Ballistic Control System II 1x Power Diagnostic System II
Hydraulic Bay Thruster I Rocket Fuel Cache Partition I
Torp DPS - 700-740 depending on skills Hammerhead dps 150ish Great Range Everything fits without implants
If you are a duel-pithi booster fan, go for it |
