ATI 9700 non-pro here. Can use both my accounts windowed, but am also experiencing up to 100% processor use.... Which leaves no room for other applications. Windows xp professional 512 mb RAM 2.4 AMD
BTW any news from ATI yet?

probably not related but you might want to make sure your previous drivers are fully uninstalled. i did a search for a good uninstallng guide because of my concern over my low 3dmark03 score. after following the guide and installing the drivers, it added 3k to my score!!

Edited by: nieo on 07/08/2004 15:29:58 It uses up all my CPU resources as well when I play EVE. However, I've been playing with as much as three clients simultaneously without any major problems. They still do just good, except when there are many miners activated at the same time.
There is a constant 90-100% CPU usage on my end no matter how many clients I run, the bottleneck is memory. Once it consumes all my memory and starts to chew in the swapfile I get a BIG performance hit on all clients.
I have a Athlon XP 1200MHz, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9600 Pro and a 7200 RPM HD.

I'm not seeing the issue, I got a pretty crap comp, and it runs 2 acounts and a host of other crap just fine. Yes CPU usage is always at 100% or close to it, doesn't matter if i run 1 acount with nothing else, or 2 with a host of other stuff.
Where is the problem? EVE tries to get the most out of your CPU, and you complain? ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Edited by: Mynobe Soletae on 07/08/2004 18:12:20 2.6 GHz P4, XP Pro, NVidia GeForce 4 MX 440, getting 50% sustained CPU usage in station with station environment on, 5% sustained usage with station environment off. In space, getting 40-50% usage. EVE's resolution is 1024x768, 24 bit, windowed, interlace, widescreen, dither all off.
Turning sound accelleration up to Full from Standard didn't change anything. The 2 persons above recommend Basic, but I usually run Standard, which is only one notch down. In any case, I still got 50% or so usage.

I'd be worried if every application I ran requested 100% of my CPU resources.

Depends on the app ;) I am mighty pleased if apps that give me better performance when they get more resources use all the resources I have available. buying a new comp in a month or so, would be mighty ****ed off if EVE only gave me 20fps cause it won't use more cpu/gpu power to give me a bitter framerate. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Surely it is better if resource allocation is dynamic rather than greedy-static?

I had similar problems. I run Eve on 2 computers and both run great, even with 3 Clients running. I recently aquired another PC and EVE was unplayable on it, but everything else ran ok. It only had a basic Radeon 7000 in it, so I changed it straight away for a FX5200 ultra, and nope still the same, I checked all my networking, sound as suggested and nope nothing fixede it. I changed HD to a bigger spare one I had and now the game runs fine. Same setup as I ghosted it across and EVE runs ok now. Just and idea if its not be tried but its worked for me .

Josh I have noticed this as well and am wondering the same things. People that use P4's use alot less CPU then people that use AMD's and I'm not sure why that is.
The suggestion about the vitual memory, is there a preferred setting for EVE? i.e. 500/500 or such other then letting windows decide?
I have a 2600XP, a gig of RAM,Ti4200 128mb VC and cannot switch between windowed or fullscreen more than a couple of times before I get the white screen of death.
Many other games run at 100% as well and folks here seem to think thats ok.My question is, is it really?

Hmm interesting, I am running a AMD Barton 2500+ M @ 2400 mhz with a gf4 ti4400 and 1 gig of ram. I noticed that every time I undock/gate (i.e. "session change"?). ALL of my available resources get consumed by EVE. My winamp starts skipping, hard drive activity stops. Once it's done, everything is back to normal. Hence it seems there is a problem with AMD cpus? I play in windowed mode.

Keep the swap static, if you let Windows manage it, it'll keep on changing the filesize which most likely causes the swapfile to become defragmented pretty soon and that hurts performanence. I've kept my swapfile at 1.5gb just for safety, 512mb might be enough for normal use though.

Edited by: Chepe Nolon on 09/08/2004 10:02:55 I have an AMD xp 2000+ with an ATI Radeon 9700 pro. Running with 1Gig of ram on an Asus a7v-333 with a via chipset.
In windowed it uses 95% cpu (1024x768) on fullscreen (1280x960) it uses 100% cpu. Both using 24bit with 8 bit alpha plus increased z-buffer (advancedDevices=1 and changed a few parametres so the stations doesn't look completely beta-duhsigned)
Good thing my pc is running watercooled, or else I couldn't play eve this summer.
I've just emptied my cache, upgraded to the latest drivers, and installed the latest dx9. And it actually helped on the lag when warping to warpgates or stations. But it didn't do anything (not that I espected it either) to the cpu usage.
And of course eve lags like "#%@ú$ when I hover my mouse on other apps while playing in windowed.
