I've been searching for a few minutes to an hour at a time for the last month and I'm not confident that I've determined either way whether my system will run Apocrypha or not. I've got roughly two weeks before my subscription is up for renewal, and apparently a month (Mar 10th?) before Apocrypha is launched, I need to have a solid answer before my renewal comes around.
I've got the results of the hardware information utility which comes with Eve on Ubuntu here.
Quote: cpu: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ cpu_ghz: 2.02 memory: 1001 videocard_manufacturer: NVIDIA Corporation videocard_type: GeForce FX 5500/AGP/SSE2 videocard_ram: 256 agp_aperture_size: 92 videocard_driver_version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.12 soundcard: SB Live 5.1 (rev.8, serial:0x80641102) at 0xd000, irq 1 soundcard_driver: ALSA Version 1.0.17 machine_bitness: 64 kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic x_version: distro: Debian lenny/sid GUI version: eve-000066
I really don't have time to sift out answers from people who just want to lie to me and laugh later, so if you're not some sort of CCP official please don't be offended when I don't thank you, unless of course you've posted links to definitive information posted by an official.

If you are running wine, and provided they don't break something horribly (we'll have a better idea on monday, they are putting Apocrypha content on SISI), you should be able to run EVE. This information is based on the idea that your video card will support the premium lite content (it is integrated into the same client, just change some settings) and based on the fact that wine already supports DX9c anyway - so theorectically you could run the full premium client. If you are planning to run the official client, well your guess is as good as mine ... there has been NO WORD, NO CONTACT, NO MENTION OF ANYTHING concerning the official linux client from anyone who is even a cousin's roommate's best-friend's brother-in-law of someone who once visited the CCP building -- much less someone who works for CCP.
If you are concerned, I would suggest trying to get things running on SISI over the next week and see if you can still play. ________________________

Crash logs for Apocrypha:
EVE, patcher.
When ccp will re-upload Apocrypha back to singularity, hopefully more ppl would confirm issues so that we'll be able to fill bug reports in wine bugzilla.

Edited by: Scrapjack on 08/02/2009 17:59:27 Apparently the answer is no.
I just got an email from an "Arend Stnhrmann, also known as CCP Whisper" which looks legit from my basic understanding of email headers, and it says that CCP is dropping Linux support completely on March 10th.
There's a few standard "not enough people use it, some of us use it" apologetic paragraphs followed by some alternatives such as Wine, Cegega, etc and instructions for using them.
I've attempted Wine for a handfull of other games and the performance flat out sucked on this system. It looks like I will have to close my account until my next computer upgrade cycle comes around. I was just starting to have fun too.

So far, Wine support and performance has been very good (certainly much better than the official client) and you should really give it a go before deciding to leave linux If you find wine intimidating, you should try crossover, works fine as well.

Use WINE or Crossover Games. You should have no problems running the full premium with your hardware but I think you will get much better performance using Premium Lite.
I will be checking out Singularity with my laptop on monday. It has a ATI GPU (which I really need to see if I get it running under Linux)

If it's possible for me to test the new client on my machine through wine/etc before my subscription comes up for renewal I will be happy to do that.
I have no problem using this premium lite client I've been hearing about.
However if I have to renew my subscription and wait until half way through it to find out if it's going to work, or I get to test it beforehand and the performance sucks, I'm just going to wait until I buy a new computer again so I can just shrink the Windows partition that comes on the new computer and use that for Eve and a few games my neighbor plays instead of wiping the entire drive for Linux.

With any luck we will have access to SISI test server with Apocrypha on. Its down atm, I keep saying it might be due up Monday but that is no more than rumour. I've just loaded wine with great success, as soon as SISI is up and i get on it, I'll get a guide out how to get Wine on SISI. You should be able to test it there with a margin of accuracy to the full product in March. And make your decision if your staying or not. -Draco

For the sisi installer I get the same senseless directx-error I got for every testpatch so far. Starts, patches and about 35% whines about a dxsetup.exe with wrong crc.
But on the other Hand no SiSi installer has ever worked for me, so I am not that concerned.
I will get a patched copy from a buddy today for testing. |

Two points to make,
a) He said he's leaving EVE, not Linux... my thoughts precisely, there are other games.
b) CCP dropping Linux support is logical for them, given the economic situation... not really logical given the emergence of things like Ubuntu which are really pushing the Linux desktop, and the netbook situation (30% of netbooks sold are running Linux, so there is way more exposure than ever before)...
BUT, and it's a /BIG/ but.... Part of the reason CCP has been seeing relatively few people running the native client is that they have not been maintaining it, and the current release version of eve runs far better under Wine.
I have installed the latest Wine, and followed the instruction on the AppDB website, and I have the Windows client running better than the native client ever did... I even ran the Premium graphics version which worked OK, but had a few minor imperfections particularly in fog... infact some types of fog aren't quite perfect in the standard client just yet, but it's not caused me a moments thought.
I don't know how much will have changed in Apocrypha, but my gut feeling is that it will probably be OK. I've been through 2 major expansions of WoW with Wine, and all is well over there.
One thing I would say tho, is that a 5500 is somwhat weak, if you can possibly upgrade it.. somthing like a 7300 or above which is very little money will probably make a giant difference to your system performance, I upgraded a 5200 to a 7300 in a friends machine and wow went from 7fps to 25fps.
Hopefully somone will be able to tell us if the beta/test client runs ok... but for now I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
I hope CCP are reading this, becuase I will find another game rather than move back to windows... I understand the reasons the native client was dropped, but I hope CCP have a way to track Wine users rather than tracking them as "Windows" users... mabe that will give you more accurate numbers. It would also be nice if somone with access to the new clients could give us a little hint about running it with wine in advance... that's hardly the same kind of expense as developing a client, now is it.

Yay! Got Apocrypha to run on my laptop! Really bites when the GPU drivers are hidden under Motherboard Parts!!!! TANJIT! On that happy note, now that Apocrypha runs on windows partiton. Now to get it to run on the OpenSUSE partition.
It should run just as well there. If the ATI linux drivers aren't too buggy. I am not surrounded. I'm in a target rich environment. |

First if Scrapjack is still reading this thread:
GET AN 8XXX series nvidia card. The 8x series have dropped through the floor in price as they are no longer "top of the line". You will have screaming performance not just with EVE but with all games you play via linux/wine.
Knevah, your post makes it appear as if you haven't been reading our SISI thread. We HAVE BEEN testing the Apoc client, and as of today its better running with good fps than ever. The bugs we are seeing are the SAME BUGS that the windows users are seeing and this is very good news.

IMO The FX 5500 is too old a card and even on windows the performance won't be that good... I suggest you get one of the 7xxx series which were the last to sport an agp interface. There is a 7900 GS on Amazon for 162$.
You won't get an official response because Linux is not supported anymore, but i think you will have a good chance of success with Wine if you upgrade your video card.

You can get a ATI 3850 512MB AGP for 129 too. Now that ATI stuff is "fixed"

Nice! What graphics chipset have you got? I have an ATI HD 3470 and am wondering whether it will bear EVE Online under WINE.

Does FX5500 suport the shader needed for premium?
Anyways, I think you can do a trial account to check if it works after subcription expired.
Just a question? You've tried wine before and the linux client was better? I never used much the official client because wine always had better FPS.
