A full year and three months ago I decided I want to fly Jove ships. So I started training and today is the day when I have finally completed Minmatar Titan level 5 - having completed the other races before this.
It has been cruel and unrewarding, up until now, seeing as others have trained all sorts of cool and nice skills. But surely this is well worth it.
Undocking in my brand spanking new - well only slightly used, but they are built to last - wraith I find an empty galaxy. "WTF", I says.
The one noob in an Ibis undocking behind me explains, right after the proper "ooh aah"ing admiring my ship that every one has gone to Eve 2, and he is going as well. Just waiting his game box to be delivered any minute now.
"And huzzah! We will all start from the scratch so we can be equal and veterans don't have an unfair advantage!" "You can train the skills again, what are you complaining about."
*ends herself*

As Oveur said, that wont happend till at least 2008 because this EVE is far from over ( I expect alot of expansions that will occupy us for a very long time)

But Dear Eris, whining is best started early. ;)
On a more serious note, I don't see a point in sequels for MMORPGs. The games evolve and change as it is, and they are patched on the fly. Expansions for the extra cash and monthly subscribtion should do the trick. If I understood correctly this is what EA decided when it recently recommitted fully to UO.

2008 is optimistic imho
trying to add content / remove bugs from spaghetti code that has been in development for 5+ years is not going to be easy... i cant even imagine trying to change / upgrade an engine / graphics while keeping the rest of the game
i reckon they'll do Shiva and Kali, and then realise that they need to learn the lessons and start again from scratch to get the rest of their ideas implemented
of course, they wouldn't tell us would they? we'd all leave now if we thought our characters would die in 12-18 months |

I don't think that would necessarily mean a character wipe, meawcat. It's just a database. Also at least UO has two clients, so new graphics engine or other such improvements do not require a sequel. An expansion would do nicely for that purpose as well.

Or did someone do that already?
Yeah, I did. It's called: LevelQuest, EverQuest, EverC.rack, EverLoot....etc..etc..
I'll never play a level based game again. That's one of the major reasons I like Eve.

To add to the speculation, heh, to release in 2008 they'd have to start coding in 2005 or earlier.

From a marketing standpoint, releasing an "EVE2" would make perfect sense. Lots of people track "new" releases and ignore most everything else. Expansions are not considered the same as a "new release", so many would ignore this or any other game not considered a new title.
Plus "EVE 2" gets to hold front cover positions, front shelf positions, etc. that are usually reserved for "new" stuff.
For now, I'm happy with CCP and the support and development that happens at the rate it does. My last game had non-existant support ahortly after being released. Upgrades were barely considered "content".
Much, much, much better here. ________________________________________________ From deep in space where nobody hears my screams... Sometimes in fear, sometimes in anger, mostly just my singing style. |

Perhaps CCP might give long life players a boost in any such sequel to repay years of loyal gaming. Perhaps not but I and others intent to be here 'til the end of EVE and can but hope such longterm input might be rewarded with some level of carry through into a sequal...

for a single player game that is probably true, but for mmorpgs i think it is the opposite. a really good mmorpg is supposed to last 5+ years right? so a company regularly coming out with a new mmorpg would be a VERY bad sign, regardless of it getting to the front of the store shelf;)

OK so I have this psychotic dream about the wormhole reopening, and we in EVE appear as aliens who need to be conquered and rulled.
Stop griping about server instability and go buy an EVE mug!
Additionally with the purchase of each mug you will receive two(2) invisible Elves.

The point may be a different game engine or even platform to run it on. Eve as many have recognized is a bit of an R&D project. Hard to say if they would port over old chars but unlikely due to the balancing issue of new players etc...
Level based games will by their nature be more new player friendly unless CCP devalues skill points (via uber implants or something) by a wide margin the only thing they could hope for is old player attrition.

Its planned to launch Q1 next year.
Those who Beta tested EVE, and proved useful, have already been invited to Alpha test EVE-II The third genesis. So far there isn't much in it. But the in-station activites (you can walk around) looks pretty cool. You gonna get more opportunities to just "hang around". There is a bar and all sorts of things. (Those female players looks pretty hot walking around ). Planets and stations are also going to contain worlds that you can explore. So those who are not in to just spacecombat can develop their characters fightingskills instead.
They want to combine a sort of FPS play with the large scale universe spacetravel.
I'm always gonna be a spacejockey myself but I guess its gonna bring a lot more players this way. Stuff I heard that will be doable is boarding peoples ship and attack with marines and ****. And you friends are the marines! cool! (But that just on the drawboard so far.)
Dunno how it will evolve.
So far people are just trying the FPS fighting and all the emote's your character can do. Smacktalking has evolved pretty much now when you see your opponent to give you the finger or moon you, lol. Though.. except for the fighting it looks more like a dating service to me the way ppl hang around in the bars talking trash, drinking Quafe UltraЦ and emoting makeouts with the hottest female avatars. (Some good girl-on-girl action is always enjoyable to watch too let me tell you )
Stay tuned

They have implemented Charactor Cross-Overs for Everquest 2, because they knew that if they didnt, they would have a lot of obsessors/addicts blowing there brains out when the world of the original Everquest comes to an end. <_<
