Well, I downloaded the full gig update to the 77718 build. My eve updates have almost never worked from within EVE, so I manually patched....and.....it worked!
The game loaded, splash screen up, login was successful. There are a TON of gfx glitches with white screening near planets, gate billboards are really messed up, but talking with another corp mate who was online using the windows client, he is seeing the EXACT SAME GLITCHES, so at this point anyway, it DOES work, but its extremely 'beta' at this point.
Hopefully as we roll toward 3-10-09, we can use this thread to give feedback and such.
Also, my install took the default shader model HI settings via premium, and seemed to work just fine (as far as it goes). More testing and reporting later, but I wanted to at least say that this build does install and work.

I'd replied in the other thread before I saw this one. Incidentally, I patched using the autopatcher with no glitches. I was getting really nervous as it got around 90%, as I am on a 3g connection, one good rfi burst and .....no carrier I am getting the whiteout effect near gates as well, so good to hear a confirmation. Billboards just show the videoscreen without the superstructure here. Were you able to do any scanning? I wasn't able to select scan type, though I could turn the probe on, I couldn't do any analysis. SISI went down for maintenance so I didn't have any more time to experiment, have to wait till tomorrow evening to mess around some more.

If the auto update downloads but fails to launch, eve actually stores the update: /home/{username}/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/{username}/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE in there are a series of folders, or possibly just 1, that represent different launches of eve (no idea how it decides these names). One will be your active one, in there will be any downloaded or partial downloaded patch files. You can manually run these. (wine Eve_version...etc...exe)
But probably manually downloading and running the patch is better.
Thanks Sevarus! your giving me great hope! Downloading tonight. -Draco |

This thread in the Game Dev forum shows what CCP is listing as "known" issues. As wine is not supported by CCP please do NOT respond in there. I link it for informational purposes so we understand which bugs are game related and can determine what is specfically related to wine.
If you see a bug and its listed in that thread, there is no sense in repeating the problem here.
We need to see information that can be attributed to problems with WINE and EVE that we can pass on via bug reports to wine.org.
Here's the link: Known bugs with SISI Client

I had no problems running SISI under wine when turning off the scene2 stuff. With the scene2 on, I had loads of issues -- I'm pretty sure the issues are not related to wine though, lots of windows users reporting similar issues. ________________________

I attempted to load SiSi client using slightly modified current git - no success. Probably these modifications should be reverted in order to run test client...
I'll try to do that this evening. |

That's because the new billboards do not have a superstructure like the old ones. The new ones are just a tiny, thin line at the very bottom of the billboard. Look carefully and you should see it. Black/blueish metal part at the bottom of the billboard. The actual billboard is just a digital holoprojection in space. |

I installed new patch on sisi without problem and i can play with enabled scene 2 (only SM_2_0_HI) with some problem on planet surface and planet belt. On SM_3 i had problem with HDR (only white screen and sometime i see ship).

Running with released wine 1.1.14 compiled from source (not git) ubuntu 8.10 nvidia 8800gts with the pre-release 188.27 drivers. (these include a full opengl 3.0 implementation that nvidia just released via the nvforums boards.)
More futzing about. Shadows are still an issue. i.e. turn em off and leave em' off. HDR seemed okay, scene 2 had the same buggy wackiness reported by ccp and win users.
Although I got some white screening issues with shader 3 + hdr + scene2, swinging the camera away from planets or the dreaded billboard at the gates seemed to return the normal gfx just fine.
I have not crashed a single time while testing at this point.
I do see much lower fps in stations, and some real 'jaggies' in fps in space, but these tend to occur with the billboards as well as some gfx anomalies with planets. Overall fps seems fairly decent even with sm3.0 high.
Switching from sm2 > sm3 gives a strange look to the game until a scene change which refreshes and gives proper colors.
So far, this is an "alpha" client imho, but I'm very impressed with wine + eve stability at this point from a lack of crashing perspective.
This is with running compiz as well. fps are higher with metacity.

Could you post your config? Have you any special registry keys, any dlls beside 9_36 or any special wine settings? Tried with my standard .wine (backed up), and clean .wine.
The game just crashes after splash screen.

Default graphics settings working ok for the most part (shield booster/hardener doesn't seem right though).
I tried a few settings but was unable to see missiles or turret effects. (Scene2 on and off)
Edit: it seems you have to restart for Scene2 to actually be disabled. Weapon effects working with Scene2 off. Also shield hardener/booster working ok. Ship's direction scanner doesn't seem to work, it just keeps thinking once you hit "Scan".

I got a successful login with my Radeon 4870 with wine 1.1.12.
Here the first found bugs : - Regression : Crash sometime at login (During the entering the station message). The mouse move but click and keyboard (incluing magic keys) doesn't work. I need to kill Exefile.exe via SSH and re-launch wine.
This is an old bug I don't get anymore on tranquility
- Shader without "premium" : globally worse than premium on tranquility, not only the ship are transparent but the station interior is more than 70% black (I will do screenshot and copy error log this night. I have tested with and without scene 2 and with sm2_lo, hi and this don't change anything.
I did not test more that that because of the lack of time (I'm at work now).
** Will test this night : wine 1.1.14 & latest ATI Catalyst 9.1 if I get them working.... |

Mmmh SiSi prefers Minmatar...
Honestly I got curious when I read, that mostly Ubuntu users have been successful in running SiSi client. I tried compiling wine 1.14, same problem. Next I regressed to .12, didn't work either. Then i got me the 1.14 ubuntu-version and tried it. but no avail, still crashes at startup.
So I guess, it has to be some files, settings or regkeys.
Could anyone who has successfully launched so far, try this with a fresh wine dir? |

It still hangs on focus restore when run w/o virtual desktop...

Had more time to try things today, turning off scene 2 cleared up the whiteouts. Sound appears to be ok. The problems encountered are all in the known issues. Can't test scanner (astro V as a workaround - will be almost live when it finishes ) Can't fly my t3 ship, the gallente defence subsystems are missing.

Can get it to start, although it takes an age to actually load. FPS was very low with default gfx settings, 1 or 2. Progressively nocked off GFX options, turing shaders off helped a teeny bit. turing scene 2 got it up to 8 FPS.
Cheated in the end and turned off premium content lol, worked wonders to poke at Apocrypha's features, but is ultimatly a fail as Classic models are doomed.
However despite massive lag/delay low FPS everything worked, no glitches in station. Didnt dare undock yet, but will try shortly...or not as SISI goes down again :P NM, i'll hawk it and try when its up.
wine 1.1.14 from source, Fedora 7 (ancient i know) Nvidia drivers could do with an update. Probably the cause of my slowdown, as Quantum on wine runs dam fast. |

Version 6.10.77718 /wine 1.1.14
I'm not sure this build is worth reporting bugs on tbh. GD section has tons of gfx issues and such with scene2 that I'm seeing variants on with wine as well.
If I turn off scene 2, we get what looks like traditional trinity "premium" with a few additional lighting effects. roids appear to be the old models.
Turning on scene2 gives strange fps spikes, planets that glow like the sun, rings around planets not occluded by the planets, billboards 10x to large (and white outs when near them.
Changing shader models requires a restart. (it works, but strange artifacting occurs without a restart.)
The one constant at this point is that the client doesn't crash. I've yet to ctd with this build regardless of gfx issues.
Sound...in and out. Odd delays in space.
Oh, and no matter what I do, no warp tunnel effects whatsoever. (scene2 on OR off).
I'm gonna wait for the next build before reporting anything else. This actually feels like an "alpha" rather than "beta" in some ways.
My opinion: the new ship fitting screen....blows ass. Sorry, just goofy looking and terribly unintuitive. The old screen, while somewhat clunky in ways....was CLEAR as to slots/loadouts and info.
I doubt CCP is looking at this thread, but if you are....sometimes cute(r) doesn't mean bette(r). mkay?

And I thought CCP were moving away from their bug ridden ways I used to experience so much if in Trinity and previous. I thought Scrum was their saviour. I think perhaps i'm wrong lol. Managed to test on an XP machine, specced well enough for Premium. Had to nock down most settings and still, buggy as hell (UI as usual). 1 Crash on Doze, have to agree though wine and SISI I haven't crashed once.
We will wait and see, maybe their SISI build is a hack to try and disguise the full Apocrypha build, and only test modules. I'm not sure i believe that. The slow downs I was getting, that I previously reported. Seem unrelated to Apocrypha. |

Per the work arounds, make sure that under the scene2 stuff, you have the dust fields UNCHECKED. It is a known issue causing lockups and gfx problems.
If that ain't it, then you need to dump cache or reinstall. (I'm not having problems docking with scene2 enabled or disabled, but if I check dust fields, then my client locks like a vault.)

I just updated to the 6.10.80627 build. No issues with white screens or gate billboards any longer.
Big issue here (but not a show stopper) is that sound isn't working. at all. either with padsp and oss or straight up with alsa. The pulseaudio volume manager DOES show an alsa stream for EVE when the game is running, and the game seems to think that there is audio as well, but nothing happens. (no jukebox/warp sounds/etc.) That is different from the last build which had audio, but cut in/n/out.
Shadows still need to be turned off or you get the wierd artifacting and invisible ship syndrome. The "dust field" and "scene 2" selections are no longer present.
Frame rate in space is over 10fps higher now for me, with about 10fps LOWER in stations. (scratching head--but still overall fps is slightly higher than with tranquility.) average 42-45fps in space, 38-50 gates, 35-50 asteroid fields and 38-45fps in stations.
I haven't had time to look at all the threads in the game dev section, so is it just me, or are they altering the warp tunnel effect to be more like the fx that cap ships produce? (lightening sparkles and such.) There is also a new leave system bubble bursting deal when jumping through gates that caught me off guard, but was pretty nifty as well.
I've got all display and graphics settings as such: hdr enabled bloom enabled ui shader quality=high ui texture quality=high
As the notes indicated that caching is automatic to shader settings, I've left that unchecked, and am not noticing any real degradation in playability or fps.
Other than just a bit of hitching during session changes, this is getting very playable. The fitting screen, while I don't like it, is at least more tolerable at this point as its easily moved and the sides can be collapsed inward. Interesting in a visual way how the ship inside the dial of the fitting screen can be moved about just like the real ship. I still don't like the layout, but its not "done" yet, so we shall see.
I haven't done any looking/testing regarding tech3 stuff as I a. don't have the time right now, and b. I haven't trained those specific skills yet. I should get going on this as I am a cap ship pilot so it probably won't be a long train. The new skill queue is a lonnnng time overdue. VERY cool stuff there.
I'm overall impressed even with the glitches. Oh and the asteroid fields are definitely improved over the last couple builds gfx wise as well. smoother fps when in and around them.
