Hello,
I can't seem to do L4s in my Raven, I have named T1 fits (because not the skills for T2), and my shield is less than my Drake, I can only do any damage to the bigger ships (Battleships only it seems + maybe battlecruisers).
My Drake seems to tank better and do more effective damage.
I just spent 140M on this Raven... and it seems to be a waste of money, and now i have a mission i can't even think to complete.
(killed a few mobs, then reinforcements came and there are about 30-40 ships waiting everytime i warp in now... not good)

I've had the same experience myself. Some missions which you can't pick your warp-in distance definitely favour the Drake. Can't beat the Raven for missions like Blockade or Right Hand of Zazzamatazz though!

being a new player i have found out the hard way on how to manage lvl4's.
1. train cap skills (if you going for active tank) 2. look at the PvE loadouts on battleclinic 3. look at eve-survival and learn how to manage aggro
this worked for me and the only T2 stuff i have are rat specific hardeners

the raven is a great mission boat...however you may not have the skills yet to be able to fly it properly.
I would use the certificates for some basic skills you should look at for the Raven. Also unless you have teh skills dont stand and fight, kite away from them...so fly away and keep moving away so that you can control the distance and engagement range a bit better.

You need very good skills to be effective in a Raven. You'd do better if you stick with your Drake and train up to use T2 heavy missiles (fury). Also you need T2 light drones to take out the scrambling/webbing frigates quick. I finish most level4s faster with my Drake than with my CNR, I'd recommend a CNR over a Drake only in BS heavy missions. Unfortunately, cruise missiles suck since the missile nerf.

Try the following fitting:
high: 6 x Cruise Missile Launcher med: 2 x Large Shield Extender, 4 x Faction Specific Hardeners Low: 3-5 x Shield Power Relay, 0-2 x Ballistic Contol System Rigs: 3 x Defense Field Purger
This is a passive fitting which is very effective in level 4 missions. The three rigs are most important for the performance so don't save money at the wrong place.
Use mission specific missiles and hardeners for each mission. For example Wrath Cruise Missiles, 2 x ballistic hardener, 2 x thermal hardener when doing a mission against gutistas.
Use named hardeners. They dont give you extra resistance but they use less cap.
When using this setup the first time I recommend you to use 5 shield power relays. Once you are familiar with level 4 missions you may replace one or two of them by ballistic control systems to trade tank for fire power.
Always zoom out and use the tactical view. Usually, rats are coming in groups. If you attack one ship of a group you will take aggro of all ships of that group. So, dont attack rats randomly but take out one group after another. And take out the battleships first, because cruise missiles are more effective against big ships.
But the biggest problem for a beginner are the drones. You *will* need drones to kill the frigs that occasionally jam and warp scramble you. Also you might need drones for additional fire power to kill some of the bigger battleship-rats until you got good missile skills.
To find out what hardeners and missile types to use for each mission you will find battleclinic.com and eve-survival.org useful.

Why? Are you running L4's to make money, or just every now and then because you're bored? If you're running L4's you want to have the best setup possible so you can run L4's faster and earn more money. Rigs are cheap! Definitely one of the reasons you can't run L4's in your Raven. The sooner you get out of mindset that you might lose your ship (you shouldn't lose your ship in missions unless you do something really, really dumb like go AFK without your shields on...), the sooner you can run L4's. |

Nearly all say the Raven is the PVE king and any low SP character can hop into one and run LVL 4. This is just more forum warrior garbage, ignore it.
Since the latest nerf, cruise missiles are trash, sadly lacking in DPS and require very high skills to be effactive. To get the same DPS as before QR you need to use a target painter (hurts your tank)and you need good drone skills to kill frigates and cruisers. Park the Raven and train your Heavy missiles to T2, they were hurt the least of all missiles in the nerf. While using a Drake is slow, a normal Raven, even with good skills is not much faster.
I have 3 T2, rigged Ravens gathering cobwebs in hangers, lucky that I can fly a Nighthawk.

problem lies between chair and keyboard.
if you don't have the skills for a raven why even expect it to perform at all? also if you wont even rig it...
and yes drakes do tank better, but it is mostly a moot point as a raven can tank enough.

ffs don't shoot frigates with cruise missiles.
raven still is the pve king (counting the faction and t2 variant of course) but now you can't be a complete nub when getting in one.

This.
Look, a Raven is fine. Cruise missiles are fine against most things BC size or larger. Cruise missiles are "ok" against Cruisers. They are terrible against Frigates. Fortunately, Raven's have a very good drone bay. Drones are *not* terrible against Frigates. They are in fact incredibly powerful. Most Frigates don't last more than 10 or 15 seconds against my Drones.
The trick to getting Missiles to work for you is to, you guessed it, put some skill points into them. Things like Guided Missile Precision, Rapid Launch, Target Navigation Prediction and Warhead Upgrades are no longer optional. You *need* those skills to make Missiles worth a flip. Obviously, things like Missile Bombardment, Missile Projection and Missile Launcher Operation are still super critical, as well as the missile size specific skills.
Now, in PVP realms, yes, missiles still need some help. SOME help. That isn't the thrust of this discussion however.
The Raven is a fine mission running boat. Widely considered one of the best for a reason, there isn't a L4 out there that a Raven cannot fit for and beat. I've run the AE bonus room in one, with no particular issues. |

Agree, but the Raven should not be fitted with passive shield, it's less effective than Drake (the Drake is better in passive though). A Raven has a lower shield than Drake (CCP's choixe^^), but it's enough for most missions with the right skills, and it has a better DPS, with the right skills.
So, if you got the right skills, a Raven is faster than a Drake for L4, but if you can't fit it properly with T2, you should stay with the Drake, because you will do less DPS (you cruise won't hit smaller ships than BC correctly) and you will warp out more often.
When you can fit it T2 (active shield), then the shield is enough to tank almost all L4 without warp out, and using cruise and drones, you will do more DPS than Drake. Don't forget the Drake can do almost all L4 too though (however, vengeance or bonus AE 4 may be hard, but more safer in Drake than in a "half" Raven). |

6 arbalest cruise launchers Nos, tractor beam, drone link whatever XL best named booster or T II T II or best named Heavy cap injector 800 charges PWNAGE (best named target painter) Rest Combination of active rat specific hardeners or Invuls 3 BCU II 2 Power diagnostic T2 best named 3 CCC rigs 5 medium 5 light drones
3000 missiles rest cap charges in the hold
Paint every target you shoot drones for frigates help with cruisers. Look up the skills for increasing target painting effect and range and decrease its cap consumption Pulse the booster let shield go down to 40-50% before starting boost then shut off when cap hits 40 % repeat if needed inject cap let booster run. replace stuff with t2 as you train shield hardeners first.

Edited by: Vaeliel on 13/02/2009 22:11:41 What You Need For To Flying The Raven
First, the strategy: use Cruise Missiles on Battleships and Battlecruisers; use T2 drones on anything smaller. Some missions you will probably outperform your drones and have to cruise missile cruisers.
Skills: You NEED tech 2 Medium and Light drones in 3 flavors: Gallente, Caldari, Minmatar. You also will need the damage enhancing skills to 4:
Drones 5 Scout Drone Operation 5 Drone Interfacing 4 Drone Navigation 4 (5 is a good idea) Drone Sharpshooting 4 Combat Drone Operation 4
Fitting: Engineering 4-5 Electronics 4-5 Weapon Upgrades 4+ Tactical Shield Manipulation 4 (T2 Hardeners) Shield Operation 4+ (Large T2 or X-Large Hardener) Shield Upgrades 1+ (Boost Amplifier)
Pew Pew: Cruise Missiles 4 Rapid Launch 4 Guided Missile Precision 3+ Target Navigation Prediction 3+ Missile Launcher Operation 5 Warhead Upgrades 3+ Caldari Battleship 3+
Pretty sure that's what you need to do level 4 missions effectively and quickly in a Raven. Your Fitting should be thusly:
Lows: 4x Ballistic Control Unit II 1x PDU II or Cap Flux Coil II (meh)
Mids: 4x Rat Specific Hardeners II (2 of each; 2 invuls, 1 kin, 1 therm for Damsel in Distress) 1x Shield Boost Amplifier I or II 1x X-Large Shield Booster (recommend C5-L or T2)
Highs: 6x Arbalest Cruise Missile Launchers
Rigs: 3x CCC
For the other 2 high slots, throw a heavy Nos on or even a tractor beam and salvager.
Once you've run a couple hundred missions, upgrade to a CNR.
Edit: Post above gives another good fitting; my goal was more to give you a rough skill outline.

Use the skill list he posted both setups work actually have flown above posted but since QR I feel target painter is more or less mandatory. Most missions i don't even need to use cap booster on mine but its there to give bit of peace of mind that you can run the booster without stopping for quite a while when things get hairy. |

So then, the Dual Small Pithi B-Type setups have gone out of vogue?
Thought the benefit to 'em was witht he right setup you were cap-stable and could actually fit damage rigs instead of all CCC - am I wrong?

Do you actually need CC rigs on a raven to run every lv4? I didn't rig mine as I was hoping to trade it in for a navy issue, and there's just 2 I have problems with WC lv4 ,and Enemies Abound 5/5. I also have switched to a t2 large shield booster as the xl model drains my cap too quickly..

You can sell Rigged ship through contract system As far as need CCC well not really but that is really skill dependant and also varies from setup to setup.

lol, the dual pithi booster raven was the fitting used by low sp isk farmers before I ever saw it posted on the forums. 3 month characters in full t2 fit ravens, except the dual small complex boosters. this was a bit before qr, so they mostly had ccc rigs fit, as well they probably had no cap skills trained.
golem pilots fitting them are just being lazy. |

Use the eve forum and battleclinic loadouts for you missions. You may find that you will be forced to warp out once or twice but dont worry about that. Just make sure you know what mission NPC's can possibly scramble your raven and take them out first.

I highly, HIGHLY, recommend that before you even think of attempting level 4 missions, you should be able to field tech 2 light and medium drones. That means getting Drones V and Scout Drone Operation V, and II+ in each of the racial Drone Specialization skills for the drones you want to use (Gallente, Caldari, and Minmatar recommended).
Also, someone said "stop shooting the triggers". I have no idea if you are doing this, but go to http://eve-survival.org/ and bookmark the site. Read the mission reports before you accept the mission, and learn the triggers. Read the tanking guide, and learn what rats do what types of damage. Set your hardeners accordingly. If you don't think you have the skills, don't do the missions. Drop back to level 3s and run them while you're training the skills you need to run the level 4s. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Ugh, what a failfit for lvl4s.
3x Invulnerability Field t1, 1x EM hardener, XL shield booster and a PWNAGE. You indeed suck at EvE.
Train up until you can use t2 hardeners (TSM IV), t2 shield boost amps (Shield Manipulation IV), be able to use your boosters effectively (SHield Upgrades IV). Sit int he stations while you do so - you're gonna get splatted otherwise. Once you've trained up to where you can run 'em halfway decently...
Use 2x rat-specific primary hardeners (and for Mercenaries that's generally EM), 1x rat-spoecific secondary (usually therm), 1x PWNAGE, iz Large or XL shield Booster, and one Shield Boost Amplifier. NEVER, EVER fit Invulnerability Fields unless you KNOW what you're doing - witht he stacking penalty, you get better resists out of active hardeners, everytime. Hell, you can get better resists a lot of time using PASSIVE AMPLIFIERS with the Compensation Skills wicked up...
Dump the Hornets and go with Hammerheads.
In ythe lows, go with 3x BCU, and either 2x PDU or 1xPDU, 1x DC depending on skills.
Rigs should be enough CCC to get you stable (hard to do with a XL booster, think about going either 1x Large t2 or 1x Medium Ptith if you have the scratch)
Then, you have a good shot at it.
