I think it is a nice addition to the game. New players need to be hit on the head with this kind of direct and blunt message. You are a special breed of man, but there are thousands like you who you will have to compete with. It also emphasizes, that you need to be active and take risks, if you want to achieve things in the game. It's has less(almost none) backstory then the previous one, but prepares you better for the universe you are actually going to be playing in. |

Nice intro and introduces you to the core elements of eve success right at the start. The ending however seems a bit too abrupt. Maybe another line or two of dialog with a harder ending phrase?

The new intro is meh... I expected some awesome 30 second action to kick in at the end, intro should be 30 action packed seconds longer! Actually I would like to see both old and new movies as one huge intro, first one telling how it all began, and the second showing how it all looks now, and what paths you can choose. |

its a nice clip. but not really 'intro' material to a game like the last one
i think if someone were to click 'create' on a new character this would be an appropriate video before they enter station view with ship and aurora
the old video is much more suitable for game intro ---------- "This is Chopper Dave's made for TV movie, Blades Of Vengeance. See, he's a chopper pilot by day, but by night he fights crime as a werewolf... YEAH!" |

Edited by: Nikita Alterana on 14/02/2009 15:02:17 constructive feedback for CCP:
things I liked:
the inital transition from the eye to the planet was very pretty the message was direct, blunt, and summed up the game the intro footage was nice
Things I disliked: no backstory the whole eye thing was a bit meh, it was alright at first, but then you went BACK to it at the end. most of the footage didn't really flow, I've seen player videos, namely this one where the videos flow much better just lacks the 'epicness' of the previous intro removes the best line in the intro: "We have a destiny to meet, and the courage of our pilots will show us the path, on the strength of your wings the fate of empires and the hopes of worlds will be decided. Take control of the destiny that is rightfully yours."
Suggestions: First off, fix the transitions in the intro, they were pretty bad compared to the other videos/trailers, they just don't flow second, scrap the eye on the end, replace it with the galactic zoom to the eve logo seen in the empress's coronation video third, start with the history, making the eye fade into a view of the Earth from space, then run through an upgraded, and enhanced version of the history, the history is VERY important, it sets the tone for the game, it orients players to the various factions and parts of the world, and it establishes the eve universe as a whole. YOU CANNOT TAKE IT OUT. fourth, transition directy into the existing new stuff, telling pilots what to do, finishing ona slower more epic galactic zoom image to the eve logo, while aura is saying "Be bold pilot, take control of your destiny, take control of your future, on the strength of your wings the fate of empires and the hopes of worlds will be decided." at that point the screen abruptly goes black and aura says finally. "Now wake up pilot." __________________________________________________ I was Amarr before they were the FOTM and I'll be Amarr after it! I'm also training Minmatar Capitals! And I eat Lions! |

Where's the creativity? Where's the forethought? Why was this created in such a rush?
On a side note, the quality of the playback is dreadful - and I'm not talking about the youtube upload, I'm talking when you watch it through the eve client - it's really poor and pixelated. I have no clues what codecs you can and can't use for the intro, but this is shockingly terrible and will not stand up to scrutiny.
Poor effort all round. Hold your heads in shame.

And the quality? Just crap.

New intro movie is extremely bad, hopefully they will return back to original one.
Voice was trying to be dramatic but simply it came out to be very cheesy.
Also I really didn't like writing, it was also cheesy.
Original one had more sci-fi feeling to it also both voice and writing was quite good.
The new one reminds me of NGE SWG movies about iconic classes, very cheesy and created for very young players =(.

It sucks as an intro, but works as a trailer. The flow is horrid, it doesn't tell us any backstory anymore, and otherwise leaves us in the dark about what the EVE-verse is. Just saying "You can do x, y, and z!" is not an intro. An intro tells story, gives you information, draws you into the world. This will not do. - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

I agree tbh.
For such a huge expansion the video wasnt as impressive as say empyrean age or quantum rise.
Alot of replays of old stuff, the best bit was the end, though I wld kinda prefer I higher focus on t3 and wormholes besides that one juicy flick.
The whole "choose your destiny and become great, you special pilot" has been done in many other trailers, this one would suit more of an exploration speech, the unknowns of space etc. EVE history

I believe this has to do with Bink resampling for your screen resolution which is larger than the 720p video. It might be using nearest-neighbor interpolation which gives you the blocky visual and generally poor quality.

well no, it introduces the player to WHO he is. but not WHERE he is.
I honestly don't understand what people mean by not an intro. it's introducing you the world of eve that the old intro leaves out. I mean sure the old intro is great at telling the back story, but the players doesn't even know he can clone himself. He doesn't KNOW what it means to be a pilot, what a pod pilot really means.
However the new one is not good ether. they are BOTH bad. one is needed to say "hey you are freaking imortal goes nuts!" and another intro needs to say "welcome to what eve is.
honestly why isn't the old intro shown the player apon tutorial completion?
hell other way around, you start the game, and you get "this is eve" and then you do the tutorial and get another video "this is who YOU are in eve"
or something, but both are heavily needed.
even though based on skill changes and bloodline changes, ccp don't care about race anymore. all characters are equal. which while good, like the new trailer is not good. CCP get it in the middle PLEASE.

I just watched the new one from CCP and have to say that while it's kind of nice, it is hardly an intro. It didn't introduce anything. It showed some slow moving ships with very little action going on and mentioned how you can be a fighter or business person or corp leader, etc... And that's it. Nothing about races or factions or back story or slavery or anything. Oh and mentioning that we're immortal (which I have still never figured out - if you're immortal, how many centuries are you going to run a business or go around shooting people before you're bored off your ****ing ass and decide none of it is worth your time? And if you put all your demi-god powers into business, why would a ship and a capsule still be your primary focus of life?).
It isn't a terrible effort, but if CCP is not going to bother really telling any story, then why not just package up one of the other fantastic videos players have made recently and put a few of them out, instead? They'd certainly get the blood pumping and tell just as much (or more) of the damn story. --

Edited by: Laszlo Ozawa on 15/02/2009 06:27:49 the new intro is an uninspiring bit of muck, hastily thrown together from bits and pieces of expansion trailers released over the past year. it feels disjointed, and gives very little idea as to the setting or the recent history of the universe the players inhabit.
simply put, it doesn't do the game the slightest bit of justice.

Not to mention, doesn't two minutes seem to be rather short? It's a huge MMO with a world and system more complex than any other out there and the entire introduction is about as long as a commercial? Why are they so afraid to put a ten minute video out there that includes some important background info and still has time to tease you with some epic scale and battles and action? The intro should be much more substantial and then on top of that there should be more regular content put out in that format rather than merely a 60 second trailer for each pending expansion. --

Seriously, this is one game with much depth and outrageousness that other MMOs would never dream of. ;) (Points to carcass of BOB) There's the market wars, and gate camps, and empire wars, as well as RP drama. Many many layers to EVE that needs to be expressed to do this game any justice.

Cool. I think it's great up until the "dare to be bold, pilot." I think it could've used some passing reference to the years of capsuleer / demi-god existence, but otherwise gets the point across. --- Burukt "The Eh Team" Vri'ra Locus Industries Amarr Militia Got shot down by a Moros, loved every second |

first of all, cue this piece of music. pretty decent for narrating history of the capsuleer age in summary. contemplations on human nature and conflict transposed over vast capital ship graveyards with scorched insignias of old alliances visible on their hulls.
eve is ..a decidedly dystopian setting, permeated with pathos, despair and an oppressing dread of the unknown.. and this must be represented somehow ..

Bottom line: CCP can do far better to interest non-EVE players that happen to see a vid from the game. That's that. Got my friend that made me bleed from martial arts to join :D Us Japs get a bad rap from the 'truth' out there in the West.
Speaking of which, seems to be whispered out there, about much of my Brothers in arms' like my Japs, hated, but benevolent in Asia. |

True.
CCP, where did the story go? We dont want epeen ego pushing, I as a new player wanted to know where we came from, what happened with the Eve Gate etc.
Give us back a modified old intro.

I don't like this new intro.
It gives you the wrong Idea, it says everyone is special and some sort of god.
And I don't think that fits with the EVE I know.
If you want to be a god, go work. Your not born into the role of demi-god immortal being.
meh, decent visuals, but the idea it portrays is something I don't like

No, I downloaded RAD Video tools and played the file directly from the client directory into it's own Window @ 1280x720, it's still dreadful quality.

Yeah, I have to agree, this video isn't very good. As other people have said, CCP should just go all out and make a 10 minute video giving the full backstory and some information about the world players are entering. In fact, even the old intro with new graphics and some clips of big alliance battles would be great.

Yes. Im sure the many thousands of players that like me go:
*hits connect* *entering game.....* "Oh ffs intro movie ;/" *hits left mouse/right mouse/escape key* *get me to the game already!*
The only videos Ive sat and watched since i started playing PC games (on a 386 ) are the ones that you cant quit out of, and even then i tend to use the opportunity to get some nicotine/a drink.
get over it

Dead Space put out an entire full length animated movie covering all of the events leading up to where the videogame begins. It's not even an MMO. And they did this before the game had been released and reached a level of significant popularity and respect.
Imagine how much more value something with that level of detail and effort would have in an MMO like this where it would be relevant not merely for one launch of one game, but for the duration of EVE-Online, period (unless they significantly change the back story some day). And if major changes occur, they can add to it with smaller episodes.
Not saying it should be animated (not like the R-rated Dead Space was at least), but it could be done with CGI like anything else. And since Ambulation is going to be such a big deal, how about when they talk about slavory or the empress or something, we actually SEE these people? We may not be able to set foot on planets or walk around stations now, but surely the media they present the story in outside of the game itself can contain more than just ships representing these headless voices in EVE's history. --

How wonderful for you.
Seriously though, just because there are people out there who play a game like Braid and say "whoop! whoop! there ain't no point ta dis game! whoop whoop! it's just crazay and ****!" doesn't mean everyone strips the meaning and depth out of every experience. Some people like role playing. Some like knowing the story behind the game. Some like to wach movies all the way through or read a book all the way through. Nothing is stopping people like you from going all brainless and twitchy the moment anything that doesn't involve pulling a trigger comes on screen. --

Simple, make the backstory part of the intro optional to watch, you can start it up in the client or something, if they're interested in the backstory, they can look for it, the new intro summarizes to the the player basically what they can do in the game, without making them read a guide.
