On another matter, what do you think about the weapon effects so, that are at already on singularity.
The Pulse Laser effects look even more like Disco-Lights then before and the Autocannon-Effect and I am not sure what to think about the Autocannon-Effects.

I haven't looked at them tbh. For one, I don't even have any skills for those weapons (strictly missile-based) and two I'm focusing more on scan practice. Although I might make my way to FD- to check them out. What are they looking like? -----

The Pulse Laser is like something out of a Disco, or maybe a flickering Lightsaber.
The Autocannon effect is difficult to describe. Yellow particle-effects coming from the turrets.

Railguns look pretty cool, much more like what you'd imagine a railgun to look like versus the old effects. Some people have said they look too much like lasers but I disagree. Railguns are suppose to fire their rounds at near the speed of light so the new effects simulate this aspect much better. Blasters on the other hand are waaaay too fast. Most of the time I don't even see them fire just the hit effect if I'm lucky.

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 14/02/2009 22:20:44 the main thing i dislike about the weapon effects is the loss of colour coding like it has now on TQ. All weapons seem to fire in the colour of their long range T2 ammo. e.g. Pulse lasers are purple Beam lasers are bright red Railguns are purple/white etc.
This is regardless of the ammunition loaded as far as I could see.
As for the shield hardener effect the OP complains about, I personally think it looks very nice. The big bubble stood out very much and this effect is much more subtle. To bad they didn't take the opportunity to add armour hardener light effects.

Awesome new effects CCP.. Absolutely love the new shield boosting and armor repping effects, also the space distortion bubble when jumping.. love the new fitting screen too.. on the other hand, the new probing sistem seems to carebear friendly.. i still have faith though:p

i personally think the devs have played an older game to get the shield hardener/booster effects, the stealth effect from the stealth tank/black hand from Command and Conquer: Renegade...
I mean it just looks too close to it, a sort of wavy line going around the vehicle/character that turns it invisible (Bright blue, sheild booster), and the dimmer blue shows it when the character/vehicle is unstealthed like it just fired a weapon.
/me goes to get screenshots of what i mean.

I think that should be easy to implement and would look so much better - like real ships and not like some random electrical discharges on the hull.
This, oh god yes, this.
Scale the ship up by ~10-20% and heavily smooth it (fewer sharp edges), use that as the outline for the shield. More intensive, hell yes, worth it, hell yes.

i am very honest by saying that i find the new effects being very cheap and rushed. remember the implementation of new models and textures? models being pretty awesome but textures really bad in some cases. same old ****ty stuff repeats itself.

Thanks for making a movie of the new shield effects. It makes it a lot easer to see. I have to say the haters are crazy, imo it looks awsome.

thanks for the vid, looks nice.
however I'd prefer the shield booster to fill the surface with light all over the ship and then fade for the rest of the cycle ... like making a transparent aura around the ship in the ships shape :-) or go from front to back with the current effect ... --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

I think the effects are great and all but I really think it looks better to depict a shield as a bubble around the ship. Perhaps use the new texture animation on the old bubble model?
no because it looks disgusting like that.

HUUUUUUUUUGE FAIL!
In every sci-fi movie, in almost every sci-fi book the shields extend around the ship. They are never right onto the armor/hull, never! This looks so horribly wrong, please please you still have 3 weeks left to fix it.
Here my suggestion:
Scale the ship model say by 10, 20% invisibly and then let the shield effects work on this invisible model with some random smoothing so that the effect isn't too 'sharp', shields are sort of fuzzy. Then you have a more or less precise shield in the shape of the ship around your ships hull. I think that should be easy to implement and would look so much better - like real ships and not like some random electrical discharges on the hull.
And for the effects? Well, I don't know if it would be possible to check the shield status and then chose the according effect. If shields are left, then the effect should work on the scaled invisible model (the shields), otherwise the effect should happen directly on the hull/armor.

Probably because it's the other way around. Railguns fire a solid chunk of matter at hypersonic speeds (pretty fast, but not luminal), whilst a blaster fires a subatomic ball of particles. A frikken' particle accelerator, if you wish. *That* is near luminal speeds.
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic. |

Ship-hugging shields would be more energy-efficient, as well as presenting a reduced profile, so the new effects are a lot more logical than the old ones, no matter how many movies you've seen with bubble shields.
Also, they're a heck of a lot cooler. I love the new sound, too.

how would scaling work because eve has a ****ton of oddballed ships that if you just make it biggere would screw with the apperance of the shield effect? far as im conceerned the new shield layer was probably done to prevent hiccups. =============

Personally I think all the new effects they've added are much better.
As a mission runner, having a coloured shield cloud (as that's the best way I could think of to describe it) pop up every few seconds is really annoying, especially if you're flying something like a Raven and zoomed in to the default level.
Having played about with all the new effects so far on SiSi I think they are a massive improvement on the pre 1995 style effects we have at the moment!
Good job CCP

Think that would be a bit more complex than the engine is designed to handle, and also not really fair towards us armour tankers since we don't get anything other than a really cool looking repper animation. I'd have loved active armour hardener animations atleast, this was the perfect time to implement them tbh.
