Would be nice to see the shields flash around the area of impact when they are struck by a weapon/missile.
I thought they'd do this but no luck :s (Mind you I also thought they'd update the lame missile effects that have been inplace since 2003, but no they still spawn from space -.-)
Or am I mistaken? EVE history

If you get shield hits I want holes and burns in the armor and when the green of the armor repper goes over it it would make the hole dissapear. I also want more fire on a dying ship and indiscriminite racial chunks flying off. =============

That would be amazing but could you imagine the lag in large fleet engagements?

As I understood it, they said that it may be possible in the future (like the particle NOS effect), but they can't do it just yet.

personally i really like the new shield effects. if you look closely at them then they ARE set out from the ship slightly unlike the armour effects that are on the hull itself.
keep up the good work ccp. Its looking like this patch is going to be truely awesome!

Bubble shaped shields on ships don't make sense within the game mechanics, the bubbles by definition have a larger cross section than the ship and there's no change in the signature radius for damaging shields vs damaging armour.
Bubble vs Hull hugging shields in tv & movies are largley down to what the special effects people want to do. But if you read "The Mote In Gods Eye" and some of it's sequels you'll find a bubbble shield in there which has some interesting mechanics, especially when the aliens improve on the human design.

With the shield hugging the hull like a second skin, I can't help but think that the spaceship designers would want to conserve ship surface area to reduce the energy used to power the shield (having the shield going out to cover the little spike things looks a bit funny)

no wonder caldari ships are so heavy and slow, they need many shield generators to cover every nook and cranny of their hulls with shields  -- stuff -- |

a hull hugging shield is more efficent than a bubble shield, bubble shields lose strength over transmission distance its also more electronically noisy. also this requires shield projectors which if you can lock onto them would be disabled.
Hull hugging shield layout may only need 1 central generator and use the outer coating on the as a conductor to emit the shields with a lower range to transmit over these shields can be far more dense than a bubble shield. =============

Video looks terrible. Shields have always been an ancillary form of defense held away from the body in question - medieval shields, riot shields, and every single form of sci-fi shield I can think of (except in Star Wars, where the shields generally have no visual appearance anyway). Shield effects that hug the hull... well, they look like armor.
The actual effects of shield hardeners and shield boosters are gorgeous, but really, why are they hugging the ship? __________________________________

I think the effect is too strong, too bright; too white.
The Nighthawk for exemple turn from black to white

Ship hugging shields at least make sense. We used to have bubble shields, but then why did shots go right through them and get to our armor, but still we only got shield damage.
Now it makes sense it shows impacts at the hull, since the shields are also at the hull. ---------------------------------------------

New effects are more then welcome. But I kind of feel sad for there not being interaction enough. shields that ripple when hit, armor chuncks that fly away and get repaired by the green nano goo that armor reppers give.
Also my biggest beef of all.
ALL ships have shields, yet 0 effects for those. I want my shield to visably take damage and when it's gone it needs to flash a bit like it's shutting down. (I'm an armor tanker btw).
We all have base shields but no hit effects :( Please CCP? ___ Space for Rent, free beer for signature, preferably with colours! (no pink) |
