The new patching method looks somewhat similar to the patching method of windows. Just cklick here and there it goes.
And whats so bad about it? First of all "Bandwidth".
Not all people got a shiny over the top 100 mbit flatrate internet connection. So downloading a huge update like the current TQ to Sisi patch with some self made application that does not support resuming a download is just bad. I had to download the new patch three times because the first two times there was "an unknow BITS error" and my time and bandwidth were just gone. Considering I got a 16 MBit flatrate connection, its just time wasted, but there are still a lot people out there with a monthly set maximum bandwidth usage and/or a slow connection.
Additionaly: I have two computers and a laptop, all have an Eve client so if I decide to play on this computer or on the other or even on my laptop I have to download the new patch three times! The old patching system put the patch into the cache folder, so I just had to download it once, then copy it to the other computers and apply it. The same thing goes for mutiple clients usage on the same computer. There are viable reasons to have two seperate clients on the same machine but with the new patching system both have to patched by download to patch twice And always copying the 4 GB large clients completely from one computer to another is just another time sink. (Not to speak of other problems that may occur I have not yet encountered with that method)
So all in all if I count all my clients I have to patch I have to download the patch 4 times...
I always wonder about the fact that CCP promotes the "Power of two" but then ALWAYS forgets about people using multiple clients! (Just remember the fanfest video where one of Dev sais "we were sooo suprised about the large number of people using more then one client on one computer"... )
I really hope that it will not be the only possible patching method in the future.
Just my 2 cents here.

Edited by: Arda Xi on 15/02/2009 11:36:56 It's possible to download both files seperately, or to copy the patch file before applying, cause it's deleted. Somebody hasn't been reading the forum. http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=994367&page=1#1

Edited by: Callea Melin on 15/02/2009 11:41:14 Well for the Sisi patch we may be able to download the RTP "now". But what about TQ later on? I dont think ccp will make the RTP files availabe for the regular patches
I'm not just talking about this single Sisi patch, I'm talking about the patching process itself for the later use on TQ.

First of all they never should automaticly delete the downloaded file when it is applied. And cause they put it in a post for Sisi, doesn't mean they will do it with every patch they going to bring to TQ. ----------------------------------

Just a hint: I copied the whole EVE-SiSi install over my LAN to the laptop, this saved me the time to update that too. Worked like a charm and didn't take too long on a GB network. Alternatively use a huge USB drive.

Currently the patcher exe is deleting the RTP-File after patching. It's a hard delete - not a move to recycle bin.

There is no way in hell I will allow the BITS service to start, regardless of Microsoft's assurances that the holes in it have been plugged. Having a service running downloads that you have no control over is no my idea of security - peoples desire for convenience is what keeps virus writers in business (my view, undocumented).
I use Free Download Manager with a plug-in for Firefox.
Haven't had a disconnect while downloading, but if CCP's server supports resuming it will do just fine.
I do wish that the patcher had an option to NOT delete the data file after completing patching.
Perhaps a tick box before choosing OK to start patching?

Edited by: Cors on 15/02/2009 17:13:56 Ok.. To the OP. If you have a 16mb connection, you're talking under 15 minutes to download the client, and another 10 minutes for the patch.
I'm starting to see a pattern with people in this game.
You're too damned impatient.
We're talking about GIGABYTES of data, and you're getting upset about 10-15 minute downloads.
If you can't afford to take an hour to download and update a game that takes up this much of your spare time, a hobby you love, a game that contains your friends, then you need to go play with an xbox, or Playstation, or Nintendo. Plug em in, toss in the disk, and away you go.
If folks can't afford the bandwidth they need to upgrade to a higher connection.
If they are unable to upgrade any higher, then they need to contact their ISP and make it known to them that they need more.
If they are unfortunate enough to live in a country where this is just not possible, then tough luck for them. That's thats the way it goes.

The problem seems to be the direct opposite. CCP has a amazing server and bandwidth that goes off the charts. Downloading 1gb patch at less than 1mb/s isn't ideal, they could at least remove the capping.
