I would think an arty maelstrom would work well against guristas, since they don't get in real close, as compared to angels.

End game,for most people, is joining a corp and working as a team or joining a corp in a 0.0 alliance and getting involved in the politics out there. What do you consider a "long" skill? Alot of beginning skills only take a few hours to train up.
