I trained assault ships first... they are fun, but inties are much more desirable to fleet combat. A good thing about assault ships though is the required skills for em are skills you'll want to max out early anyways (Engi, mech, etc).

The armor rigging skill reduces drawbacks by 10% per level... Drawbacks start at -10%, so, at level one, it's -9%, and at level 5 you have -5% drawback to speed.

you don't "need" certain attributes in order to pvp/fight, hell, you could fight with a perc/will 3/3 research alt as long as you spent enough time training. all attributes do it optimize certain paths of skilltraining.
