What I did when I came back to the game was get in an explorer that was lying around and reacquainted myself with how to do exploring in high sec before heading off to null. I recommend that approach.

And I died. Astero got caught in gate camp. I had made it almost exactly half way around the map. I regret my fit now - should have gone with a micro warp drive over an AB. I am going to finish the journey in an interceptor.
