Couldn't find an English link quickly but it was reported on Dutch news sites this morning. The trial against the journalist who threw his shoes at Bush starts today in Baghdad. He is facing a maximum of fifteen years in prison (!!) for 'threatening' a foreign official on visit.
It would be a noble deed from Bush if he dropped charges..

I can't really say much about this without venturing into the realms of politics and religion, but I think it's silly that people would consider a journalist with a shoe as a "threat".

In all honesty, for the good of reputation - charges should be dropped.
I mean for gods sake, Ol' Shoe Flinger certainly had a reason to heave his size 10's up there.
Getting hit with a shoe is no different than getting hit with an egg or water balloon imo, and how many of our politicians have been yolk-assasinated with an egg?
Countless.
Put it into context, 15 years for throwing an egg or a water balloon - daft.
That, and if you consider the lulz everyone got from seeing Bush's best Matrix audition, it pays for itself.

Bush's reputation is already shot and now that he's no longer the president he's no longer obligated to be a "good guy" just because. He should, but if he let it go this far I doubt he's going to stop now. _______________

Kinda meant the reputation of the country. Because he'll forever be associated with the United States - and if he does anything bad enough to get onto international news, it'll reverberate through the USA.
But.. yeah, good point.

This is just the thin end of the wedge people. It starts with shoes, but where does it end?
This time it was a relatively harmless pair of easily doged brogues, but suppose the guy had had access to some more damaging form of footwear; wooden soled sandals for instance? The knock-on consequences for freedom, truth, justice, mom's apple pie, glib warts on the backside of humanity/war-mongering muppets who only got the job because daddy has friends could have been disastrous.
We need to stop this terrifying new development before someone gets seriously hurt. I therfore suggest the following countermeasures to combat this new threat to global peace.
1. A world-wide ban on any footwear with more than 5 pairs of lace holes.
2. Strict controls on the sale of "trainers" and possession of more than two pairs of the same to be criminilasied with a tarriff of not less than 3 years for offenders.
3. The incarceration of shoe criminals in special "boot camps" to be built and staffed by the lowest bidder in close proximity to poorer areas; after all, we don't want anyone that matters getting hurt if the swines escape do we?
4. Steel toe-cap work boots to be phased out in favour of industrial thickness carpet slippers by 2011.
5. The immediate arrest and detention without trial of Noddy Holder and other surviving members of the 1970s Glamdanista movement.
6. Odour-eaters to be reclassified as a class B susbstance and penalties for posession to be rigourously enforced in line with a zero tolerance policy.
7. An immediate shoe amnesty on stilettos and "****-me" shoes to last for three months, after which time possession of these items to incur draconian penalties.
This should go someway towards making our world a little safer, and although there will be the usual outcry from dissenters and lily-livered-liberal-commie-pinko-subversives(tm) I'm sure that a few judiciously planted Doctor Martens will swing public sympathy our way and enable these sweeping new safety measures to take effect.

Bloke breaks law, bloke gets caught, bloke then has to face his punishment for his crimes as stated by the local justice system.
Seems pretty fair to me, yeah Bush deserved a lot more than having a shoe thrown at him but at the same time, if you break the law you should be held accountable for it.

I doubt Bush has anything to do with it. The Iraqi government is the one who feels it is the injured party. While the shoe-thrower is a hero to many it remains that governments do not like to be embarrassed. Additionally a government takes the safety of visiting dignitaries seriously, no matter who that dignitary is or how despised he may be. While Bush was not physically hurt it could have been something worse than a shoe (Bush had a hand grenade thrown at him once but it failed to detonate).
My guess is the guy will be found guilty and given some token penalty so the Iraqi government can save face without seriously busting this guy's ass.

Someone today got very angry at me.
I said that the guy deserves to be locked in prison for 6 months with the equivilent of 1000 dollar fine. To stop people from making the assumption that I liked president Bush (I hate him) Ill add this...
If an american college student threw a shoe at Irans president, Id want the college student arrested, jailed for 6 months, and fine 1000 dollars, with it atleast being a low grade felony.
Disrespecting the worlds leaders when at a conference is UNACCEPTABLE. It is not important how they are elected, what country they are from, or what their beliefs are. You will respect them, or you will pay the price. Period.
Thats my view on the matter, and I'm sure the worlds leaders would agree. |

True, it is the Iraqi government that's pushing it but if Bush asked it to end at any time they would be obliged to. Bush even pointed out in afterwards that it didn't do any REAL harm and that he was "expressing his newfound freedom". If he were sincere in that comment I think he would have followed through with even a small request to be lenient if nothing else. _______________

The experiment with new-found freedom ended with a lengthy disappearance into a prison system in which he was beaten by all accounts very badly and access evidently had to be limited. Now a trial on political charges. Who needs more proof our tax money was wasted? Jeez, those people could not practice self-restraint even briefly to keep up appearances.

You honestly believe that the US stooges aren't going to do as they're told? You people are so ridiculously gullible it never stops amazing me. It's incredible that you think that that Maliki fool, who was hand picked by Washington, isn't going to do as he's told and is going to abide by human rights laws when the US/UK and their boss Israel don't.
