It is xenophobic at most, not racist. The French would laugh at the characterisation of their national identity as a race. The whole point of the Republic is a shared identity that supersedes all such considerations.

Actually, the French military record is vastly under rated. For instance...
In 1883, the citizens of Lijar, Spain, were infuriated when reports came back that while visiting Paris, King Alfonso XII had been insulted and attacked. The mayor of Lijar demanded retribution and declared war on France on October 14, 1883. Not a single shot was fired and not an injury was sustained during the confrontation.
93 years later, King Juan Carlos made a visit to France during which he was treated with great respect. In 1981, the town council of Lijar ruled that "in view of the excellent attitude of the French," they would suspend hostilities and agree to a cease-fire making this the first time in two centuries that France fought a war and didn't lose.

The irony is that many of the detractors are Americans who don't realise the role that the French played during the Revolution.

France was pretty damn successful militarily - hell it had one of the largest Empires in history, and nearly conquered Europe, but was beaten by the Russian winter and the strategic genius of the Duke of Wellington. France had a tendency to win battles, not wars, and that - in combination with some major failures on the part of several American citizens - gives France a reputation for failure when in fact it's been quite successful up to a point.
Hell, the only reason why Britain didn't fall during WWII was because we were propped up by America and had 22 miles of rough seas between Dover and Calais, otherwise we'd have been a pushover. France fell after long and heavy fighting against the first truly mechanised and well-organised army of the 20th Century, and still put up a notable resistance effort against the ****s for years when occupied.
France also won the Hundred Years war - which was pretty damn important! -----

wasn't France on the winning side in WWI? I could have sworn that without the french USA wouldn't be a country. First country in Europe to evolve past monarchy (temporarily, till napoleon took over). ------------------------------------- My other alt is a Ferrari |

Well at the beginning France bowed down to Germany which allowed the regime to get to the coast and set up as fast as it did. But even then you still had the underground network of the French resistance. The French resistance made it easier for us to liberate Paris and in doing so we put France back into the war so they were Ally when the war was won. It technically wasn't a loss at first so much as a time out so to speak. It gave France a chance to relocate it's government.

What's your point? It's no secret that the stalemate of WWI didn't begin to end until American involvement. Biggest mistake Wilson ever made if you ask me. He was the one who set us firmly on the path to "make the world safe for democracy". And people wonder why we've spent 1 out of every 4 years at war in the past century?

Undeservedly so. Reading Flight to Arras (or any account of losses) is a useful aid to understanding what happened. They were not ready, they were going to lose and they knew it. They did keep fighting, but individually, in isolation, without communications or a plan. They were averaging a division worth of men killed every week over the six weeks. The war would go on, but they would fall first. I am not going to be too quick to judge people who fought knowing within days they would lose their country. Not believing, knowing. I don't see too many victors with that test of character ticked off in their history.

Pretty much what he said. At the on set of WWII the french were sitting right next to the germans out maned and out gunned. They were isolated from any help and frankly had no choice but to lose, and lose in horrible fashion.
England, and her allies were stranded across the channel, or busy getting what force they had on the main land out of there. Though even if they had been able to bring the full weight of their force to bear against the Germans at the onset, it would not have amounted to much, or saved the French.
Its a pretty interesting read if you like history. And you'll begin to think of people who point their finger at the french as ignorant, once you understand the situation they were facing in those early days.

Well I won't discuss politics but...
I can't believe that bringing WWI to a relatively swift end was a mistake.
And if you dislike the path America has been on, I believe the fault lies more with the succeeding president's then with Wilson him self.
