We draw closer to EVE Online: Apocrypha and we are now getting a good picture of the final patch size. I wanted to follow up on my previous advice to players using the Classic edition that they upgrade to Premium before EVE Online: Apocrypha is deployed to Tranquility.
- Windows Premium users will automatically download a patch that is estimated at 1.5 GB. The download is in two parts: First the EVE client downloads a small 910 kB patcher application, which then downloads a 1.5 GB data file and patches the current installation.
- Windows Classic users will automatically download the Apocrypha install, since a patch from the Classic edition to Apocrypha is larger than the install. The download is in two parts: First the EVE client downloads a small 1.5 MB install application, which then downloads a 2.1 GB data file and overwrites the current installation.
Windows Classic users can reduce their download on deployment day by upgrading now to Premium, either using the client functionality or by downloading and applying the Classic to Premium Graphics Content Upgrade for build 75883 (Quantum Rise 1.0.5).
(The Classic to Premium Graphics Content Upgrade is a 687 MB download. It will reduce the needed download on deployment day for Classic edition players by approximately 600 MB.)
To tell if you are using the Classic or Premium edition, open the file C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\start.ini and look for "edition=classic" or "edition=premium".

What if I need Premium Lite client? The ingame upgrade feature won't let me upgrade to Premium, becouse my computer can't do SM3. Do I have to wait for patch day to get Premium Lite (which works with SM2, at least I hope)?

There will not be a separate "Premium Lite" client. Shader Model 2 and Shader Model 3 support is integrated into a single client in Apocrypha.
Download the Classic to Premium upgrade and run your client in Classic mode (automatically detected) until Apocrypha deployment. After patching the Apocrypha client will automatically run in SM2 mode.

What about users who installed via Steam? Does it work the same, or should I download the premium client separately from Steam and install it as a standalone?

The Mac install will be around 2.6 GB and the patch will be of similar size.

The box contains premium version of EVE quantum rise, so you will have to patch the game online no matter what you do. The box should go on sale a few days after march 10th.

Is there any chance that CCP would consider seeding a BitTorrent server with the required downloads?

Sure, let's put a client still in development onto a CD, and sell it to people. Oh wait, that's just plain stupid.

One problem for me, my C: drive (purely for Windows itself) has only 600mb or so of free space available, D: drive (where everything else is at) still has plenty of room, but patches are automatically downloaded to C:\Documents\Local etc. With small patches this is no problem but 1.5gb is not going to fit.
Can I download the patch manually from the EVE website and run that? (and if so, should I avoid the 910kb update bit?) ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

We started creating the DVD in mid-December and the install for the DVD was finalised on 14 Jan. We were only half way through the development cycle for Apocrypha at that time.

There will be "manual" fallbacks, i.e., for the install and each patch you will be able to download a single self-extracting archive containing all the files needed. But you will have to download them from our web site using your browser (or download manager) and initiate the patching process once the download is complete.

According to some, there are no performance hits comparing the two clients, however, you SHOULD have a modernish graphics card. If you run classic fine, you should be set. ----------------------------------- "What can go wrong, will go wrong." |

Using a Shader 2.0 card, I'm getting better FPS out of the new Premium 'Lite' than I was out of the current Classic client. ---

Please tell me the Apocrapha patch will be something I can burn once it's downloaded once... both my wife and I play Eve, so downloading the while thing twice to move it 6 feet accross the room would really not be fun.

1) buy a flash drive, then download the client/upgrade and put it on there. 2g flash drive recommended. 2) Use your local network via shared docs or similar to transfer it over the network. 3) use any old dvd/cd burner and simply burn the exe to a disk someplace.

That surprises me a bit since you already use LimeLight as a CDN. I would think that would be plenty fast enough for everyone, but *shrug*. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |
