Originally by: CCP Tuxford My apartment is generally sort of tidy although my girlfriend is the driving force behind that but my desk at work is a mess. So is my virtual space in EVE. I have assets scattered all across the galaxy and nothing is set in containers. However I spend very little time rummaging through all this mess as I mostly just fit and refit my ships.
Seems to be what you guys should really be asking for is better sorting and searching in the item containers.
Actually, what I think we would really like is the ability to compartmentalize our hangers. The whole purpose of putting all our belongings in containers is to keep things nice and neat and orderly (yes many of us are OCD).
Even if we could sort and search better, I know that I personally would still be driven nuts by the mess my in my hanger.

I try to keep my hanger nice and tidy, but often times it can become a hassle because when it comes time to sell stuff, they have to be moved to the hanger floor before they can be sold. The assets window also can't see inside the containers (although EVE Meep can, as well as any tool making use of the asset API), so sometimes I can have issues finding things. It's just something to do when I'm bored...heh...
A workaround might be to just keep what you want to FIT on your ships in the hanger, then keep whatever else in the various containers. If you're just changing between fits every so often, it's not like there will be hundreds of modules hanging out on the floor.

I'm a rabid mission-runner, salvager & miner, so I end up with hundreds of piles of junk in my hangar on a regular basis.
Did you know that:
- the hangar maxes out at 999 piles of stuff?
- "stack all" takes a phenomenally huge amount of time to work when you have 999 piles of stuff?
- the reprocessing screen takes something like O(x log x), so as you put more items in your hangar, it takes longer to open the reprocessing screen?
- actually reprocessing stuff takes something like O(x log x), and you can actually watch the items disappear from the hangar for two minutes waiting for the reprocessing to happen when you have hundreds of stacks in the hangar?
- "Repackage" used on a selection of items will abort when it hits the first item it can't repackage?
These sound like good reasons to put stuff into boxes, some might say.
Alternately, you could do what I do and store mission salvage & loot in one station along with your salvaging ship, then store ship fittings in the station where you actually talk to the agent along with your mission running ships. That way you don't have to wade (slowly) through piles of junk in your hangar!
I can't stand storing stuff in boxes, mostly because there's no convenient way to search stuff stored in boxes. I used to store stuff in boxes, up until the point where I ended up buying 4 copies of a very expensive skill book, because I didn't realise I already had 2 copies stored in that box marked "Training Book" in that system 15 jumps away.
After I've looted & salvaged a mission, I just drag the contents of the cargo hold to the hangar. Any more work than that (yes, even "stack all") is wasting time. It takes up to two minutes for "stack all" to work on my hangar, mostly because it's so crowded with junk. So I limit "stack all" to the last thing I do each night as I'm packing up to go to bed. Sorting stuff into boxes would be wasting time - it's not making or saving me more than 100k ISK per minute, so it's not worth doing. Getting back to mission space to start blowing up stuff a minute faster means I'm making more ISK/hr. At times I've started using a different station simply because the first station got too crowded. If there was a facility to have the hangar gnomes go through my junk, repair broken stuff, repackage everything and stack it all neatly into piles while I was out flying my spaceship, I'd certainly be a very happy pilot.
The asset report generated by the XML API does list everything in every container (and every module fitted to every ship, and whatever's in their cargoholds too). It's thus feasible that we should be able to search for stuff inside containers in-game. I suspect that a lot of work needs to be done on the design of the inventory database API in order for such a feature to not result in a meltdown of the cluster.
I have my ideas about what the problems are and how to solve them, but at this point in time the quality of my thinking is only slightly above "full of ****". I can't wait to get to Fanfest and corner Prism X for a few hours to ply him with drinks and extract all kinds of database secrets from him.

I've never put my stuff into containers, never found the need to so I wonder why do you do it? It seems like a fix to a problem that we (CCP) should be solving for you.
I like to keep stuff sorted like T1 unnamed, named, T2 and cool stuff and four cans with ammo/weapons/defense by damage type and a universal can.
I like to see a clear organized items screen so I can quickly find what I need. Scrolling trough 1000 items with the horrible font of EVE is not my idea of fun. So that's a shame, not much use for me this feature.
While we're at it big stations cans without the annoying lock/unlock would be nice as well. But I guess that's a DB access issue perhaps.
I love the idea of tabs. If I could have just a few tabs the fitting tool would be useful and a blessing for my poor mousearm.
Let's get organized !

Why? Because certain options such as reprocess and sell are only available from the hangar. If those options were available from within containers, I would simply dump all the stuff I plan to get rid of into its own container and use the hangar for fitting. I don't think that's the best option, however...
I prefer to have separate containers for each ship that I use, that way it's much easier to keep track of what modules I have available for each ship.
As it stands now, I will never use ship fitting profiles. It's much easier to just open whatever container I've assigned to the ship I'm fitting. If the profiles were able to access containers, even just one "special" container, it would make things much better. ___________________________________ Always enjoy your virtual synthetic psychotropics in moderation. |

Alright this is easy...
People who are complaining about the saved fittings are still living in the old eve, the old way of doing things. This is the new eve, rejoice.
Instead of putting your valuable stuff in a can so it's sorted, and easy to find, just let it stay out in the open hangar. Put the stuff you want to sell, reprocess, build or whatever into the cans.
The only "issue" you will run into is that you can't reprocess stuff while it's in the can, not a big deal really, ctrl-a to the main hangar when you want to reprocess, the stuff stays selected, hit the reprocess button.

(did not read everything ;p)
Main use of those saved fittings are imo "corp fittings" which you can set for standarised fleet bs. Not even needed to load mods from hangar - just to see how they look like.

For me it is a combination of two things:
1) Being able to sort things by what I use them for. I use cans for my mission fittings, blueprints, ammo, etc. It is nice to have all of these things put into a container so I know where to find them all. Having you guys add filters to make this doable for me would be difficult, as I might put similar items into different containers. An example might be the fitting container. I will probably only put fittings in there that I use on my mission ship (different hardeners to use on different missions, an afterburner for the ones that require slowboating, etc). I might have other ship modules, but they may not fit into this category and as such would not be included in this can. Would you be able to support this with simple filters? You would need more than a simple "Module" filter, you would need more detail than that.
2) Load time. Some of my cans cause my client to temporarily lock up while loading, so I can't imagine what would happen if I had the contents of all of those cans just sitting in my hangar. How would you solve this so that cans would no longer be needed?
I would say if you could just get it to check cans for the items by the name of the can that would work fine. If the can is not present or you change the name it wont be able to find the modules until you modify the fitting (which would probably require remaking it unless you allow us to change the can it looks in, which would be handy for sharing with a friend who uses differently named cans) or name the can appropriately.

I keep items sorted into containers for the simple reason Im a packrat, I collect everything and then once every 6 months have a hangar sale. I keep modules sorted by Hi, Mid, Low, Turrets, Launchers, Drones and Ammo (Still not sure where the heck to put nanite paste!). This makes it easier to find the fittings I want when setting up a new ship, and up until now refitting a replacement ship.
The idea of having everyting just sitting on the hangar floor gives me cold shivers.
Why not have the load fitting search all opened containers as well as hangar floor and any open Corp hangars.
Some have said keep the junk in a can and the good stuff on the floor and then when you want to reprocess move the junk to the floor and reprocess it. What happens to all the good stuff that is already on the floor that you dont want to reprocess.
For now Ill simply use the load fittings as a picking list, put the gear on the floor and fit from there.

For the same reason people use folders on their hard drives, to organize stuff.
Originally by: CCP Tuxford Seems to be what you guys should really be asking for is better sorting and searching in the item containers.
Partially. Some people prefer to organize their stuff, some people just prefer a big pile of stuff and use good search functions. Comes down to personality. I prefer to impose my own order upon the universe rather than go with the flow. Hence I spent much time organizing and moving my stuff and rarely use search functions because I don't need to, I know where my stuff is.
The fact that you can't fit ships or search inside containers is irritating, but not so irritating I would give up my way of organizing for it.

as for fittings, i've not really used the load/save fittings system so far - tinkered about a bit, but it's not something I rely on, however, removing things from containers - or not doing so - was something I never really considered. makes sense when you think about it, but never noticed it myself, since all my tinkering was done from inside the hangar.

Not tried to fit the ships either using the saved settings, yet.
If it doesn't pick the items out of the containers, then as with many others, it's useless for me as well :(
I have numerous containers at my main station, for skillbooks, implants, ammo, BPO/C's, minerals/ore, ship modules and trash loot to be pawned off.
Here's thinking forward though...
If they enable us to use saved fittings screen to pick modules out of containers... then please... when you change fittings again, put the replaced modules back into container and not default it into the hangar.
If I switch out my active hardeners for a mission setup, e.g. EM hardeners for EX ones, then I don't want my EX hardeners to be taken off ship and put in hangar. I want them into the container where the EM's came from.
Basically... wherever the module to be fitted comes from is where the module being removed gets placed.
Hope that makes sense. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

I think that all this can be resolved by making tabs in personal hangars like in corp hangars. Then in fitting screen you would just choose which "tab" you wanna use to fit ship, or if CCP want is easier, they can choose one tab they would be always used.
I would like to see tabs and also to be able to search tabs, again all / one / filter, because cans can't be searched :(
As many others, I also have many different stuff in hangars and organize stuff in cans is atm only possible option how not to get lost in stuff :)

To answer the dev why I use containers:
From missioning and salvaging I get lots of stuff falling in one of the next categories:
- Collectable stuff--> EVE fluff & puff = slaves, electronics, slave dogs, prosti...(bad women) etc. - Stuff to save for 'you never know or soonÖ to be used like cov-ops' = mining crystals, agility boosters, cargo expanders, plating, odd stuff for invention etc. - Salvage stuff = mods from loot and salvage to be either converted into minerals and sold at a hub. - Mission stuff = mission specific items that I really must keep apart or risk them getting reprocessed, like I recently did with some meta 6 stuff ( which cost me a keyboard). - LP stuff = items if I have enough of them I can convert them into an better item like amarr navy crystals. - Used laser crystals, since there is no way to see docked how damaged they are, they must be stored in separate containers.
In short if I mix my mission modules with that of my looted and salvaged, my mission modules will, one way or the other end up being processed, which leads to increased blood pressure which is bad Mkay?
If you could fix this, having the fitting system being able to look into your containers would be awesum!

You cannot fit corp fittings out of corphangar. Even without containers. How crappy is that? ^^
For the containers issue: I don't think CCP will enable this, as it probably will get a heavy extra load on the database, as every container is a sheet and contains its own links to the items inside. Or something like this. But as it always takes pretty long for the container content to load upon opening, I'm pretty sure it creates some load on the database.
Whatever.
They will make it an option for us to checkbox and it's default is OFF, if it's really that important.
But this feature is absolutely needed.

The reason I use containers is to keep things, well, sorted... and especially keep my important stuff away from the stuff I want to reprocess. I never did trust that reprocessing window in any of it's iterations.

Fitting ships is slow enough as it is without having to scroll through list and lists of junk that you've just thrown in to the hanger.
Just because YOU can afford to mindlessly buy modules and completly forget about them, doesnt mean that new players can, or the casual player.
YOU might know all the setups and exactly what you need to fit to your ship before you go pvping, but others have to spend a lot of time on it, getting the fitting right with our not so good skills and limited budgets, flying around various systems to get good prices.
Its one thing that puts me off pvp, I spend ages fitting a ship, ok its going to pop, I know this... what I hate is going back to the station and having to do it all over again. I thought fittings would solve this, but it doesnt solve my money problem and it doesnt solve my skills and it doesnt make it any quicker because I MUST control my possesions.
Seems to me that once you become a CCP employee you forget what it was like to actually play eve. If your answer is just "dont put stuff in containers" then you really have lost touch with reality. |

Saving ship fittings is not totally useless. It's one of the best improvements that came with Apocrypha. Granted, it can be better if it could fetch modules from a container or such. But I've already started saving the most common fits and it saves me loads of time when switching between travel and PVE fits.

I've noticed that you can't save a fitting name, it just saves it under your ship name. So you have to change your ship name to save a different fitting!

Yea completely pointless, my drones dont swap, missiles/ammo dont, and none of which are in containers, just plain in my items.
Another ccp super effort, but unless you fly un armed, with no drones, simply a salvager fit will work, then its cr&p, because it will take you longer to open the fit screen and then saves etc, than just to plain swap them from items.
The same as the skill stacking really, whats the use of a 24hr window, do a skill stack system or dont !
I have petitioned it rather than just posting here and hoping someone reads it from ccp, maybe a FULL and working version is under construction for the end of summer patch :)
