I've been flying a Myrmidon for a while, it used to be this dazzling silver/chrome. On Hi settings, it's now this ugly tarnished-worn-gold with dirty-turquoise bits. On Low, it's a flat grey.
Think someone in CCP has some brain disorder that associates Bad with Good?? Is Shiney a bad thing in Iceland?

While I can't speak for the other races ships, I have to say the Amarr changes are a welcome sight.
The addition of matted panels on the Amarrian ships such as the malediction, and especially the harbinger, are a good thing. From an artistic standpoint.
Previously, most Amarrian ships had their reflective map covering the entirety of said ships. Yes, I agree it was shiny. However, much of the detail and form was lost due to the cube map of solar systems showing through more than the natural diffuse and normal bump information.
Maybe its just me, but ships prior to Apocrypha looked better in stations than in space. (And in screen shots as well) That is because when in motion, the reflected maps were constantly moving across a ships hull when banking and turning. This made ships hard to read.
The selected reduction of reflectivity on many of these ships added a level of contrast that gives these ships depth. They allow the eye to "rest" as it were. Giving shape and form to the surface of these ships that were not previously visible.
Although, I can't speak for the "whiteness" of ships like the abaddon. Some added saturation to bring the ship back towards gold to offset the specularity changes would be nice.
But you guys need to let go of shiny a little. Too much shiny is actually a bad thing. Some ships are better for it, and it is delicious.

ACK? I was just using my abaddon, which missions using Tachs with multifreqs. I noticed that my lisers were very white, and was impressed with the whiteness of them.
All lasers are that pure copy paper white color now?
Ack, my poor rainbow coalition coercer!!!
Truely this is a sad, sad patch for Amarr ship lovers.
They should compensate with a 50% damage increase on lasers.... or maybe remove laser cap useage totally.... You know, something minor like that to offset our catastrophic loss of asthetics.

I'm no programer/developer/designer by any means so, honest question; Why not just make several different skins for ships per graphics level? Would it be terribly difficult?

Something interesting I noticed in the time after reading this thread: My hurricane got shinier with the Apocrypha patch.
Irony is tasty.

ARe you trying to start crap?
I mean really, it is pretty well known that the lasers are still color coded based on type.
What's REALLY REALLY cool is the explosion cloud from projectiles is color coded based on ammo type.
It's really cool shooting EMP ammo and seeing a blue cloud then shooting plasman and seeing a greenish hue. Stop, hammer time. |

The nozzle is probably just plugged. Send Rimmer and Lister down to unclog it... Just keep them away from the driveplates.
nah dont do that cause u know Lister is gonna figure out a way to turn the chicken noodle into chicken vindaloo

Whats next, are they going to non metrosexual gallente ships?
Symmetrical caldari ships?
Minmatar ships without rust and dirty laundry hanging off them? (thats what those brown sail like structures are... clothesline arrays)
On the mention of caldari ships. They did make a few of them symmetrical, whereas they have been once asymetrical (though that didn't come with apocrypha, was in some other patch. Think it was when premium came ;) Real men do it the hard way: fly Minmatar! |

Well written OP :)
Also, this premium Lite nonsense seems to be messing up a lot of things. I hope they get it all back in order.

Caldari t1 ships now look like blue play-dough, Most t2 Amarr ships have lost all their sex appeal and now look like strawberries and the Damnation, formerly one of the fiercest looking of all ships is now burnt-turd brown.
I thank all of the developers for these new and improved graphical features.

Amarr ran out of real gold plating so they had to resort to fake gold paint of less carats worst of all.

Well, it's not just the shader or the lite models... the abaddon is no longer gold...
I know I'm not using the lite models, I have a gallente shuttle and it has the orange patches still. If I turn the shader and textures down to low, the orange goes away and the gallente shuttle turns grey/silver all over... THOSE are the lite graphics.
So, even in non-lite mode the Abaddon is no longer gold.
The real travesty here is that while Amarrian ships have lost their luster, somone made the damn Minmatar ships shiney.
My garbage scow (salvage fitted hurricane) lost it's slightly green moldy-rust color and now looks fairly clean and sleek.
Rifters were awesome looking as a rusty little death machines, someone took a powersander to 'em and knocked off the grime as well as most of the character.
The minnie shuttle now looks like a tie fighter... THE REBELS HAVE A TIE FIGHTER?!?!?!?!
The Emperor isn't going to be happy.

Dang... thats very pink. WTF, who let Gallente designers redo the Amarr ships?
It's pretty bad that the premium lite model of the retribution actually looks better then the premium one.
Less detail, but at least it's not Barbie's Laser Boat Playship«

I haven't noticed any extra white color on my ships lately...
Must look when I get home. I know the new effect on the armor repair gives the ship a lighter color as the effect crawls over the hull of the ship.
What bugs me the most though...
1) Freaking sound is worse than Amiga500 games now. 2) My Mega Pulse II lasers flicker like a fluorescent light beign turned on rather than a healthy, powerful deathray.
Flicker combined with crappy sound makes me for unhappy camper.
I've started flying minmatar ships instead... I can't fly my Amarr boats when the lasers act like something from a crappy sci-fi movie from the early 80's. -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |
