In the off chance this is legit, good luck.
I suggest swapping out your hard drive for a new once since it sounds like that's getting corrupted. Also consider your motherboard chipset, but seeing rarely anything gets written to it, it's more likely the hard drive.
You can rule out faulty ram / CPU as well probably. Like you said, express gate is booting so it's most likely your harddisk.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't own an express gate motherboard) But I believe express gate boots of a flash chip on your motherboard. Avoiding the hard drive all together.
In any case, there is _no_ way EVE could have corrupted your boot sector. The boot.ini was an unfortionate accident. But the bootloader uses a different, non accessible partition by default where the patcher doesn't go in any case or screwup.
I still think it is HDD corruption with the info you have provided.

I'm glad to hear that. Now do yourself a favor and scan your harddrive for errors with a check and backup all important data on that drive just to be sure (hey, it can never hurt...).

I'm pretty sure it's on a read only flash chip, intergrated on your motherboard. Splashtop is the original name for express gate:

EDIT: reading now that express gate Lite is hdd based. That might actually have been your issues since that does messes with your boot sector.
