I'm crawling along in my little itty moving some cargo. I'm approaching a gate and during that time some half dozen or so ships zip past me doing warp to 0.
What's the rush?

Yes. but... if you were sat at your screen watching your hauler on auto pilot, would it not make sense to manually warp at 0 no rush but if you get were you are going quicker... you.... well.... get were your going quicker !!!

I only use autopilot in high sec when I have an Iteron Mark 5 full of Megacyte. I then go make a sammich, turn on some Oprah and have the excitement of my life wondering if I'll make it to where I'm going but not looking at the monitor for at least 20 minutes.

To be constructive, it's human nature to be first.
For example, "IBTL" is like warping to 0, but in a forum. CCP usually autopilot to the locking of a troll thread. While some users feel the need to be there first and perhaps feel that they contributed something useful in the process.
As for in space, being there first and jumping first is common because it's a force of habit for those who wish to survive while travelling low sec. Now matter how fast people reach the jumpgate and how fast they are at right clicking it and selecting "Jump", there's always a chance of getting ganked.
Also, the time it takes to fly just about any ship to the gate from where autopilot decides is appropriate to disengage warp drive is ridiculously long, and not many people on earth want to be last, especially in a video game.
There's a million valid reasons why people want to be first. But the universal reason is human nature.

I imagine that people who are in player corporations with active wars do not use autopilot if they know what's good for them.
People in NPC corporations use it more, particularly for the safe parts of safe space (i.e. not in Jita or Rens) due to the lack of risk of getting ganked, and the ability to do something else while flying.

I only use AP if I'm in a interceptor with 17 jumps to go.
Maybe if I have a long way to go and the ship has a 400mps standard speed.
Not much otherwise. Oh I remember the days before WTZ. What a chore.

Using WTZ has **** all to do with human nature, and everything to do with the fact that it's both a lot faster than autopiloting, and that slowboating to the gate is a great opportunity to get ganked... And wanting to spend less time moving from place to place in an internet spaceship game is entirely logical.

The only time I use the autopilot is when i'm afk transporting basic consumable stuff with a trade alt on a minimised client whilst I do somethng that requires my focus on the active client. Stick a rack of extenders on a Badger II or Mammoth and you will be safe from all but the moast dedicated of suicide gankers as long as its just normal ammo and replacement mods you are transporting. Big ticket items always get the manually piloted unscannable corp bay 250k ehp Orca of Doom treatment or the standard cov ops if its small like some deadspace mods or hg implants.

Man I can't see the point... I tried to use AP on my hauler last night for a supply run. It was about 30 jumps though high sec. I stuck it on auto went off for about 20 to 30 mins and the ship still had 21 jumps to go when I came back.
It might not be so bad in something that has a decent speed, but the fact Auto doesn't warp to 0 pretty much makes it useless for anything big and slow.

Autopilot is useful JUST in this case:
- You are not in a war (or you are in NPC) - Your route doesnt include any lowsec or 0.0 system - You need to go afk for more than 3 minutes

Its not useless with bigger ships as long as you don't rely on them for critical time sensitive deliveries. If one of my bases of operation is running low on consumables I know well ahead of time so on some day before it runs out I send a resupply run on a minimised client. I then go enjoy some rl for a while and by the time I am back the next week or months supplys are waiting in system for me.

Usually I'm on semi-autopilot.
Warp to zero manually, then add the gate you're buzzing to as 'first gate' and activate autopilot.
You'll land at zero and immediately jump through, then it waits for 30 secs cloaked till you give the next warp to zero command. Meanwhile, I do other stuff at the pc.

I used to work on full autopilot in highsec. Still WTZ manually but since I was taking absolutely no notice of the game, my brain was on AP.
Part of the reason I don't play any more, it got boring.

You missed the point I was trying to convey.
Let me show you and the other person who responded to my post another example:
You both will respond to this post, not because I'm telling you to, but because you want the last word; thus, you will feel like you win the argument, which is similar to being in "First" place. Hence, human nature.
I would autopilot if it WTZ. Not sure why there's two options, when it's fairly clear that most people will try to avoid the useless one.
The solution would be to autopilot to zero. This will never happen, so I won't ask for it. EVE. The most ambitious project on earth. |

And it rightfully shouldn't happen.... right now there are two options that each have their advantage and their disadvantage. The nice thing is that these are perfectly complimentary: the disadvantage of one option is the advantage of the other and vice versa. You can't have it any clearer then that.
Anyway, if people would ask and get WTZ on autopilot, why don't they go one step further and ask to simply be placed in the other station without having to undock, warp and jump all together? It saves time, it's easy, less risk so why not?

if there is enough lag after you enter a system you can issue a WTZ command before the autopilot warps ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
