Some proteus setups are beyond ******ed OP, but by and large T3 ships are just really expensive HACs or command ships, depending how you look at it. Even if their prices came down to the T2 cruiser/BC range, most fits don't offer enough over their T2 counterpart to be worthwhile. If some bonus and slot layout modifications are made I could see them working as a mobile CS, but who knows what CCP is thinking with their balancing.

When they fall to 300mil they will be impressive.
Atm the only good value for money you can get is the covert ops cloak and anti-bubble features.

This. Besides the cost, they are awesome, and borderline overpowered. Once the cost comes down (CCP has stated an intended price of around 300 mil), they will be extremely effective ships when used correctly. ==========

Some of the fits you can create are ridiculous.. think 50-100k EHP with resists all in the high 70s to low 90s, plus CovOps cloak and an Expanded Probe Launcher.
They seem like the ultimate solo ship for PvP, but then again they are (currently) ridiculously expensive. PvE I don't think they offer enough bang-for-buck.

I agree about the price Aja, but Command Ships are based on Battlecruiser hulls, the T-3 ships are Cruiser sized ships.
I'm hoping that the T-3 ships will fill the role between the plain T-1 Cruisers, and the T-2 ships based on Cruiser hulls. They won't be as good in a specific role as a T-2 cruiser hulled ship, but will gain from the flexible setups the different sections allow.

So if you had to choose between a) 100mio isk Sniper Hac AND 100mio isk EW Recon or b) 300mio isk flexible but not as powerful lego ship no matter what subsystems you choose, you would pay 100mio Isk extra? For what? The "flexible" argument does not count; for the same price i could buy multiple and powerful T2 Cruisers to choose from. T3 as "T1,5" is fail, no matter what flawed view of gameplay we create. Ingame i choose the cheapest and most powerful tool for the job, not the expensive and "flexible" mediocre epeen extension.

Remember, not everything in EVE is large fleets. T3 ships are awesome for situations where your limiting factor is the number of pilots you can bring to the fight. The recon + HAC pair may be awesome in a 50-man roaming gang, but in a 2-3 man gang (or even solo!) you'll be very thankful you have the T3 ships. -----------

Even with ship prices slowley dropping, Subsystems are so insanely overpriced. It's like buying the ship 5 times over. No way are T3 worth half the overall price it costs to fly one. Maybe someday prices will come down to reality. Until then T3 are nothing more then a primary for hungry pilots

Signed for truth. I agree with Wildcat.
Proud owner of a Legion and Proteus and these ships with the proper subs and fits are mental. Anyone claiming these suck are clueless beyond belief. No other shipclass currently ingame has the versatility these babies provide and they sport impressive tanks and/or dps. These ships can be reformed and rebuilt to take aspects of several ship abilities and merge it into one hull. As stated before, for small gangs, baby fleets, these puppies shine.
Surely not for everyone due to hefty pricetags, but ISK matters aside: for a Cruiser class vessel NOTHING even so much as comes close to having their strengths.
I have yet to run a test with either versus a 'regular' T1 or T2 ship of any size bar Caps that can beat them in a 1 on 1 situation. Heck even 2 on 1 is doable in several situations. If you got the insights to fit them well ฿nd fly them properly you are gonna wish you had one earlier.

Yes, because we all know Command Ship pilots roam solo frequently and because solo PvP hasn't been smacked, rolled, doused, ignited, and basted in nerfbat juice for more than twelve months now repeatedly patch after patch.
Solo PvP = hit and run on ratters, mission runners, and noob haulers
You don't need 2bil worth of ship to kill sheep. Bragging about it is even worse.

Yes, it is unfortunate that the game is not big enough to fit both solo and gang related combat. Or at least, CCP is not willing to make it their primary initiative to do so. I have heard arguments that range from wanting to encourage more subs by killing solo combat, to making what would have been solo players roll new accounts so they can continue to solo with themselves.
But, obviously Aes is stuck in their own little world of denial. It would fit right in with the WoW crowd, dancing around the outside of the main cities, having spent hundreds of hours acquiring every PvP purple set in the game, picking a duel with some rube in blues and greens, then dancing around and cheering themselves when they smash someone with half their strength and gear that is sub par on a good day.

My issue is that Aja only claimed they are better, which pretty much encompasses a wide enough swath of "who knows what she means by that beyond cost" that Aes' response was unwarranted.
If the only thing that makes a ship better than any other is whether or not it can solo that ship, then all you have is a huge pyramid with a couple of ships at the top and everything else might as well be [Metal Scraps].
Now while this does seem to be the in case in terms of how there always seems to be a FOTM or FOTY ship type in the game, that ship type is not always considered "best" simply because it can solo pwn anything in sight (i.e. Falcon of Vagabond) but better in the case as pointed that it's relatively cheap and still provides nearly as much of an advantage as things three times it's price.
There is a diminishing marginal utility to flying ships solo. You wanna spend a few hundred mil extra for 100 more tank and 50 more dps, or buy 5x ships with just a little less punch, and enjoy being able to lose all five over the course of a few weeks, rather than lose a single ship and have to grind ISK for those weeks to get another?
I think Aes' problem is assuming that the only bar, measurement, and litmus test for ships in PvP combat is whether they can solo other ships. It is extremely narrow and limited in scope, and really says and proves nothing about a game that is gang related to begin with. Sure a Force Recon could solo a Cov Ops, but for a throwaway scout ship I'd much rather blow 40mil on a fully rigged Cov Ops ship than +100mil on a Force Recon. Lady Aja was pointing out the diminishing marginal utility of the Strategic Cruiser, not it's ability to solo PvP effectively, which really means little.
You are right, I am taking this the way I want to, but the way I am taking it, is deduced from the principle assumption Aes made, that the primary reason Strategic Cruisers are better than Command ships is because they can solo them. What does that even mean? I can name on one hand the times I've heard about a Command Ship roaming solo (please spare the cost is no object arguments however, as obviously someone with hundreds of bil could care less if they roam around in a CS and get it blown to bits). So what exactly does it prove?

While I do like the tone of a actual civil reply, I have to say you assume to much. Flying vanilla ships is fun as well and I understand the concept of flying a ship that could have bought me 5.
Because I fly 2 T3 ships doesnt mean I have grown blind to other ships and feel superior to anyone else. That assumption is unsupported and insulting.
However, a highly expensive ship adds thrill to solo roams that a regular ship will never provide. Have you ever tried to see it from that angle?
Im not the kid with the billions of isk that just waves his virtual cokk in everyoens face trying to show off while screaming 'i got **** you dont have'!!!
8 out of 10 times I fly my commandships and quite like that too. But when I need added thrills, ill grab the T3 and see what I can fire up.
Being in harms way is fun, but extra exciting when you know you are using something thats taking a good chunck out of your wallet.

To each their own.
Agreed, I am glad that you clarified your stance and I can accept that your opinions are based on your personal entertainment value and tastes.
Explaining is much better than bashing (for both of us), so I think both of us can agree that it's a matter of "different strokes". Good times, always appreciative to see some rationale out there rather than just stoking fires.
Your points come off much better in the context of this explanation above ^ and do not paint you in the negative light that I first assumed you were in.

Personally I believe that when ccp said they want them around t2 prices (never seen that claim personally), they meant the hull would be around t2 price, and truth be told the hulls are coming down in price quickly the last 2 weeks. The added cost of the subsystems though will probably always keep the ship near a cs pricetag or more.
This matter aside though which is open to speculation and further maturity of the w-space industry to make the grind for t3 materials as effective as possible, these ships are extremely powerful, boasting better tanks than cs ships, roughly the same dps and all of this with the agility and the signature radius of a cruiser.
I have bought a proteus which I am using as a L4 missioning platform for now and I must say the speed at which it does them is unrivalled by anything. Yes it cost me around 2 bil, but isk is for spending.
I havent found the balls yet to take it into PVP, but there are combinations of subsystems and fits that reach 200k-300k EHPs and thats with t2 modules only. Hell you can jump into a 5-6 man gate camp in this, get webbed and she will just smile at them while moving back towards the gate.
But the one thing most important in the t3s is the small size of the subsystems. Allowing you to carry 3-4 subsystems in the hold with some spare mods. You can scout in your t3 cloaked, then dock at a station fit for uber dps and go back, without having to move ships before hand.
I trully believe these ships will get nerfed if the prices drop, hell they will probably get nerfed anyway. Their skills requirements are too low, their stats are too high and they are the true swiss army knife of EVE atm. |

Meh. I doubt they will ever become as awesome as a Vaga for soloing, and soloing is the only thing I would ever care to use them for.

TL:DR: If you have oodles of money then go ahead and fly T3, they are fantastic ships. If you don't then stick with T2.
The cost of these ships is irrelevent to how effective they are. If your one of those guys that makes 1 bil a day trading in jita, do you really think they care how much it costs? Also longs as its a few % better, then its money well spent.
If your one of those guys that does missions or rats to get money and it takes you a week or more to get 1 bil, then maybe its not worth it to you. Its just too much work for that extra % that T3 offers, but thats your perspective.
Its pointless to argue thir cost effectivness, since everyone puts a different value on isk. What may seem way too expensive to you, may not be to someone else.

They're called Strategic Cruisers because you need strategy. Alone they're not so great, unless you use them as a cross between a recon and a HAC, which can either scan like a cov ops or immobilize like a recon, and is basically uncatchable. That's awesome and what I'll do with mine.
Aside from recon-style work, T3 cruisers are made for RR. You can easily throw a fit together that is nigh unjammable, has ridiculous resists, can permarun a single RR turret without any cap mods whatsoever, and has a sig so low that it can shrug off a fair chunk of damage that way while orbiting the form-up ship (preferably a logistics).
4 shield Lokis can easily get a 2,500 DPS RR tank between them (with no faction gear), putting out a combined 2,000 DPS in damage from autos at 30km+. Add a couple Maelstroms for gank, a Huginn for webbing, a Scimitar, and some Stilettos for 30km point range... now you mean business, as your combined tank surpasses the 5,000 DPS range when overheated. That's just with the 4 Lokis and the Scimi, the Maels could add even more RR, and we haven't even discussed warfare links yet... did I mention that this is all from a small gang?
TL'DR: Solo T3 ships are not impressive. Put a couple together and you can do anything.
