Edited by: Caelum Dominus on 18/05/2009 19:32:51 Hello everyone,
I'm a web developer with too much time and bandwidth on my hands. I've been tinkering with the idea of founding a network to facilitate organized brawls. This thread is an attempt to measure the interest (if any) for such a network.
In a nutshell, here's what I have in mind:
ò An Alliance Tournament-inspired ruleset in that there is no limit to pilots involved, but rather a "point" cost assigned to every ship class. For example, a team could elect to bring 1 cruiser or 2 frigates rather than 2 cruisers.
ò Several brackets, each with a different amount of total points to allocate.
ò A ranking that includes all teams and/or players.
ò Top teams (as determined by the aforementioned ranking) are invited to join a tournament to face off against other top teams and compete for fabulous prizes every month.
Please reply if you'd participate, and don't hesitate to submit ideas!

He could opt to run the contests with canflipping used or for example have 2 corps at war with each other to make it so only certain people could shoot each other etc

Do you mean the tournament that would be held every now and again for the top teams? I haven't really given it much thought yet, but I'd think somewhere quiet and secret (ooo sikrit) with only the teams and representatives from the network on location. If you were referring to the countless matches that would take place to rise in the ranking, that would be left to the discretion of the teams involved.
Either way, I feel this is a minor concern at this point - I'd just like to get an idea of whether there's any interest for this idea. :-)

My corp would participate if it didn't require a huge amount of effort. To be quite honest, finding a fight in EVE is pretty easy. Finding a fair fight can be difficult though. Things like this have been fairly difficult to participate in in the past, and poorly planned. Your idea, in the end, will ultimately determine participation. --

What I would suggest is that rather than let corps decide who they can fight and fighting as many battles as they like, you could organise it in a tournament format. It could be like the alliance tournament but for corps. It'd be a lot of effort to organise and promote the tournament but I'm sure it would work.
I reccomend using can-flipping procedures and holding the tournament in highsec. Hold matches in the same system weekly and make it a regular event. For example, if it's in Deltole and runs on Sundays, you could call it the Deltole Sunday Tournament or something and anyone that hears about it will know when and where it is. Kind of promotes itself in a sense. But definitely don't underestimate the amount of work that will have to go into organising something like this and DO NOT try to keep organising it yourself if the workload gets too much. There are plenty of other people that I'm sure would help out and take over for weeks or months at a time. If you can get that up and running as a regular weekly event for a few months straight, I think it'll really start to take off. It's keeping it running and organising it well that's the real issue.
I'm slightly more dubious about your current idea of teams being able to fight as many matches as they like etc. I think a standard drawn tournament would feel much more fair and avoid one or two corps lording over the entire tournament and beating down anyone that approaches their continuously updated rank.

Absolutely - I can relate to this. As such, it's critical to my mission for everything about this to be uncomplicated. I'd like everyone to be able to participate and have fun, ranging from "newbies" to hardcore PvPers.

Thanks for your suggestions, Nyphyr! Those are great ideas.
The tournament plays an important role in this idea. I feel that limiting the concept to only the tournament would perhaps entail a more closed form of competition, though - don't you think it'd be even more interesting to see the outcome of something you participated in yourself?
If anyone can participate, this might also be a nice introduction to PvP for those who have yet to experience it as it should be.

Killboards.
this
killboards are designed with statistics to show you how muuch efficienty the corp/alliance has
why do you need a ladder or you could do a ladder with efficiencies of alliance and corp but having a battle arena kind of thing makes it well sound really cheap. eve is about the un expected. alliance tourneys are fun BUT they only come once a year and i think because there so few and far apart it make it more for enjoyable watching.

A third party system is the next best thing to the now-aborted arenas.
Arena's, if well implemented, would be freaking awesome in EVE. You, or a small team, join a roster against other teams or solo combatants and fight to the death.
It's done on a daily basis right here on planet earth in a million different formats, from UFC to soccer, but somehow the insane player base has it in their heads that regulated competition would somehow magically ruin the game. If you don't like, then don't m'fing do it.
It's the same as mining, if you don't like mining don't mine. If you don't like running missions, don't run missions, if you don't like pvp, don't pvp... if you don't like signing up for competition combat, then don't... but it would hardly be the death of EVE.
People who play MMO's 24/7 seem to lose all capacity for logical reasoning.
To answer your question tho, yes, I think it would be great and if there was a way to do it without dorkholes crashing the party, then I'd be in line every day to fight. ---------------------------------

However, doing it in a secure manner that prevents re-tards from showing up is key.
Also, if it does take off, the organization could be hell..
I think it's a great idea that just needs someone to get the ball rolling. If you can find a way to make some isk off it too, then all the power to ya!

I have some experience in managing events in mmo's and I would like to offer my advice.
1. Relying on dodgy mechanics. Can flipping as an aggression tool for gang fighting can go wrong, not all manage to get aggression, someone does not honor a wait time that is needed for everyone to confirm aggression and so on. And in my experience if things can go wrong then they will (and on a regular basis as well). Can flipping in my experience is only really valid for 1vs1.
2. Trust people to break the rules. So you need to be prepared. Unfair rules will break the spirit of the competition as will to lenient rules.
3. Public venues are never good. On the plus side you get spectators. On the negative side you get spectators. Remote Repping, lag inducement, suicide attacks and things you can never really plan for will occur with spectators around.
So those are few of the negatives, in my opinion. If you can get past those then you are in easy waters.
I also believe that while the alliance wars were cool that they did not truly embody the spirit of EVE. But then again that is just my opinion. :)

To further explain what I mean.
A league I would like to see is a corporate empire league.
Terms.
1. Pre determined size of corporations engage in a week long series of fights. This is simply done through declaring a Mutual war.
2. Kill mails need to be uploaded to tournament site from both parties. ((or is it possible today to get API info?)).
3. Size restrictions on ships will be enforced through kill mail moderation. With points deducted for illegal ship use (this you can easily do automatically on the website).
and so on.
I believe that with this you could setup a long term league that would almost run it self, no need to be present every sunday for X hours. Just need to log in over the week, confirm that registered teams are engaged in war and wait for the results to drop in.
In the long term you will get people willing to assist and gather reports on the fighting. Done correctly I believe this could be big.
Anyway, those were my two cents.

Thanks for your sound advice, Simon. At this point I'm mostly concerned about the rating mechanics, though. I'm unsure what the best method to rank the teams would be. I'm leaning towards a mechanic that would encourage teams to pit themselves against opponents of similar caliber somehow. Ideas are welcome.

I'm making sure this wouldn't be required in any case, as I feel it would limit the amount of players that are able to participate in proportion to my own spare time. The idea is to allow teams to submit the results of matches they've participated in themselves (needless to say, there would be measures to ensure that the results are legit). If that doesn't work out, a set of EVE Arena representatives would be appointed to be present at any match.
It is my goal that the only thing that would need to be organized is the bi-monthly tournament.

Yes the problem is getting others to stay out of it and not cause havoc or some pirates or alliance jumping in for a laugh and killing them all (which would happen) If CCP introduced some battle grounds (which is easy to do as they can use the mission mechanics where you have a key to a gate to warp to some secure space) then im sure this would be a go (unless CCP then introduced their own ladder!)

I would think the security issue could be managed fairly easy - simply have the respective teams meet at a secret location at a particular time and date. If it's corp based combat, the corps declare war 24hrs prior to the meeting.
You would definitely need an official or two to witness the combat, verify ship classes, any weapon restrictions, enforce any rule infractions, and submit official results. Probably two officials - one per side like a "second" in a duel. |

I'm not so sure. At least I hope not, as I feel that would severely limit the scope of the concept. The idea is that one team submits the results, and that they cannot become official until they've been confirmed by the other. Teams are also going to be required to submit screenshots (one for each team) of the battlefield (complete with wrecks and whatnot). I think these conditions will make it very hard to cheat, and even if it occurs there will be other (sikrit) measures in place to determine who has been tampering. |

HI,
Id LOVE to see this. Id like to add the extras though:
I'd also like to see a ruling though that anyone can turn up in the system and watch under a NRDS policy...
Anyone shooting a person/player/watcher who is NOT part of the combat gets an instant GANK from all in the system! (Players in the combat can join in if they so desire). (Imagine someone getting ganked and then pod webed by 20 people who he has to pay off to get them to release the webbers! And he gets podded anyway! LOL!)
Of course, any combats would then have to notify CCP that the arena combat is taking place, and they would be happy and this would allow others to join in without bringing down the server!

I think that this would spice up eve verry nicely.
I have been watching the eve tournament VI and wanted to join in on the fun but starting at that level isnt what i would call fun its called suicide.
So giving an smaller version with rankings with different brackets (low/med/high amount of points) that takes place as much as you want to, is a dream come true when just thinking of the fun that will take place
But managing this will be a huge effort as each match will need a referee so to say and with the time zones this could be on going 24/7.
Only thing is, as stated above that the kill mails that occure in the arena be seperate some how from the normal kill mails. And rule break actions (early locking/moving) should be somehow be prevended automatically, as noobs will waist the time of those that want to play fair and have fun.
I hope this does happen as grabing 5 corp mates and fitting a 10mill T1 cruiser and going into an unknown "fair" fight sounds just so much better than running into 0.0 and ither not finding anything or jump into a Bubble camp.

Again - I'm making sure having referees to submit the outcome of a match will not be required, as I feel it would severely limit the scope of the concept. There will be several measures in place to prevent cheating, the most apparent of which requires both teams to confirm the outcome of a match as well as screenshot(s).

I'm not sure self policing would work. The main problem I see is that teams will not want to risk multi-million ISK ships if the other team does not verify the results due to some "perceived unfairness". I guess it might work if there were no restrictions at all. But there would have to be a time limit on battles at least. Perhaps a timed "king of the hill" scenario. Hmmm...

Thanks Soldra; those are valid points. I worry that people might cheat in all sorts of ways if the losing team isn't required to confirm the outcome of a match, though. Seeing the lack of in-game mechanics, whatever system EVE Arena employs would ultimately be based on trust. That's probably a bad idea, but it's all I've really got. I will be appointing a host of moderators to deal with disputes, though, so that teams that continously refuse to confirm results will be penalized or banned.
I don't think we'll see people using T2/T3 cruisers outside of the bi-monthly tournament, however, and for most people a tech 1 cruiser is pocket change. I hope and think that most teams will accept the small risk you describe, except perhaps in the case of matches between the top 10 teams. In that case, one might want to have representatives at the scene to confirm the results.
Thoughts?

I know I'd like it ,
but you would need incredibly much time for something like that. Organising 1 tournament is a lot of work .. let alone a whole ranking system .. _______________

The ranking system will be automated and should prove very little work to maintain.

How is this coming on it has certainly caught my eye.
Also on a side note are your skills up for hire after this project has been completed?

Speaking as a pvper and 0.0 resident for 5 years+....i like the idea. If CCP themselves came up with it and added battlegrounds then i would not be happy, but for a 3rd party to do it im all for it :), Its keeping with the spirit of eve.
Bloody hard to organise and keep safe from people butting in etc. I would suggest that you run it in low sec perhaps, that way you may get more than your average carebear wanting in. Of course there would be issues with pirates etc, but having it in low sec allows pirates to participate.
On a side not theres a thought...cpp adding a match system in low sec and low sec only. Buff to low sec, keeps the pvpers happy and gives people a chance for fair fights. Have a role play reason being that concord dont condone pvp in high sec etc. Of course there would be a pirate issue, but just have a few sentries at the arenas. Gives the people participating in the matchs a chance to fight back lol.

I'm glad to note your interest, UniToxic. I completed the system today, and it is scheduled to enter (closed) beta tomorrow.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Teams are free to complete ranked matches whereever they like. Most of details surrounding the invitational tournament to mark the conclusion of each season is still undecided.
